Later today northwest winds gusts of 40 to near 50 mph will develop and last through Friday night. Many hours of whiteout conditions are expected during that time with travel becoming very difficult or impossible as roads drift shut. In addition, arctic air with dangerously cold wind chills will spread across the region. This event could be life- threatening if you are stranded with wind chills in the 30 below to 45 below zero range. Please avoid traveling. KEY MESSAGES:
- TODAY AND TONIGHT, Widespread snow across much of the coverage area
with a break that was over the Twin Cities Metro between 1-2pm now
moving into western WI. Still expecting significant snowfall
through around 6pm, tapering off during the evening. Snow thus far
is not quite as fluffy as was anticipated due to stronger winds
within the DGZ aloft, however with heavier rates this afternoon
could easily go back to the fluffier snow. Visibilities of 1/4 to
1/2 mile reported within the stronger snow areas thus far.
- THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY, High confidence in widespread impacts
from increasing winds and blowing snow. Wind strength increased
slightly compared to overnight, but overall similar to what the
forecast looked like 24 hours ago.
- IMPORTANT CHANGES, Blizzard warnings for western Minnesota are
still set to begin at 12pm tomorrow, with the I-94 corridor
upgraded to Blizzard Warnings beginning at 6pm with the exception
of Hennepin & Ramsey counties (where it will be more difficult to
blow around snow). Winter Storm Watch continues in Wisconsin in
regards to blowing snow conditions, with headlines likely coming
out either overnight or with tomorrow's midday forecast update.
TODAY AND TONIGHT...Forecast soundings from the RAP/HRRR show an
incredibly healthy DGZ for much of the area this afternoon and into
the evening, with the snow thus far more of a prelude to the heavier
snow, with some evidence of banding becoming more apparent on radar
this afternoon. The big concern yet remaining is in the quality of
the snowflakes, as winds at 40-45kts within the upper parts of the
DGZ have likely been shearing snowflakes apart, coupled with shifting
winds as the snow falls into the lower portions of the DGZ and
towards the surface. Snow ratios have been adjusted downwards
slightly, closer to 18:1 than the previous forecast of 20 to 25:1,
which has also slightly dropped snow amounts. QPF has remained quite
similar to the prior forecast with overall liquid amounts from
0.25-0.35''. There is some evidence of potential FGEN enhancement on
the mesoanalysis page, which is supported by the HRRR/RAP, however
this would not arrive until later this evening. Still, radar as of
2:15pm shows healthy returns heading towards Mankato, stretching back
towards Redwood Falls and northwards towards portions of Kandiyohi
County, so plenty of snow potential left with this system.
TOMORROW THROUGH NOON SATURDAY...As has been stressed over the
previous few days, dangerous conditions are setting up for the period
from Thursday afternoon through about midday on Saturday, with
significant winds resulting in blowing snow. Winds are similar to
the overnight shift, bumped up by a couple of miles per hour overall,
but this will have little difference in the expected impacts.
Blizzard conditions are likely throughout western and southern
Minnesota especially, with the strongest wind gusts of 40-50mph
possible along I-90 and within western Minnesota. The strength of the
high pressure filling in behind the departing low is still one of
the key points of the forecast, with the deterministic GFS still
showing a 1050mb high centered over the western Dakotas at 18z
Friday, which will be more than enough to keep the strong gradient
and blowing winds in the area. The core of the metro including
Hennepin and Ramsey counties were deliberately kept out of the
blizzard warnings for now, as empirical evidence suggests it is
harder to get significant blowing snow and blizzard conditions than
in the suburbs and rural portions of the area. This is subject to
change pending how conditions end up tomorrow, but for now still
expect blowing snow and reduced visibilities, just not quite as bad
as the surrounding area.
Winds will increase throughout Thursday with our blizzard conditions
beginning in the afternoon for western MN and I-90, and around 6pm
for the additional counties added to the warning. Western Wisconsin
has been kept out of the warnings for now, as we would like to have a
bit more time to see how the snow ends up today due to the delay in
the start of the winds until very late Thursday compared to the
western portions of Minnesota. Winds will remain gusty throughout
Friday and into early Saturday before finally beginning to fall back
around midday on Saturday, with much milder winds finally fully in
place by Sunday. Wind chills will also be a significant concern,
with low temperatures Thursday, Friday, and Saturday all around 10
below zero (with the exception of western WI around 0 degrees
Thursday morning). Wind chills will range from 20s below zero AT
BEST to near 40 below zero in western Minnesota on Friday morning.
To summarize, significant travel impacts are anticipated due to
blowing snow with significant visibility reductions, which will cause
hazardous travel conditions. If you do get stranded, wind chills
will be dropping into the mid 20s below zero in the Twin Cities
metro, 30s below zero in surroundings areas and western WI, with the
coldest chills around 40 below zero in southwestern Minnesota. The
two of these factors combined will make getting stranded while
attempted to travel a life-threatening event.
SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY...Winds will have fully diminished on Sunday
with the strong high having weakened before moving overhead resulting
in clearer skies and gradually warming temperatures into the middle
of the week. Highs on Sunday will still be chilly in the single
digits above zero, however by Wednesday we could be seeing highs in
the upper 20s across much of the area. Another hit of snow is
possible with a clipper system late Sunday through early Monday, with
deterministic models trending towards the western to southwestern
part of Minnesota seeing the greater chance, however there is yet to
be a consensus nor will there be until this current system moves out.
The Climate Prediction Center Outlooks are trending above normal to a
large degree beginning Wednesday of next week and continuing through
the new year, which for us likely means some highs in the 30s, a
welcome reprieve from the cold we will experience over the next few
days.

One more round of snow moving from west to east tonight before the
first round of this winter storm comes to an end. We will see
generally MVFR and IFR as these last few bands pass through. We
should have a break with some high MVFR low VFR ceilings on Thursday
before the winds start to pick up. Once the winds to get above 25
knots the fresh snow will be lofted bringing down visibility and
bring VV ceilings of MVFR and IFR levels. This will then persist into
Friday. Visibilities could fall below 1/4SM at times.
