For Douglas, Pope, Stevens and Swift counties in western Minnesota, these wind chills will persist all day long. Tonight through Thursday morning, lows will range from around 10 degrees below zero in far southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin to between 15 and 25 degrees below zero for much of central through southern Minnesota. Combined with northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph, wind chills will drop to between 25 and 35 degrees below zero for all of central and southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect this morning for much of west central through south central Minnesota, with the Advisory continuing all day for Douglas, Pope, Stevens and Swift counties in western Minnesota. KEY MESSAGES:
- Hazardous Wind Chills will develop tonight, and continue into
Wednesday morning everywhere outside of east-central Minnesota.
Wind chills become colder and more widespread Wednesday night into
Thursday.
Wind gusts as high as 40 mph continue this afternoon across the
western half of Minnesota, which has led to areas of blowing snow
through the day. Visibilities around 1 mile have persisted through
the afternoon in the Alexandria vicinity, so have decided to continue
the Winter Weather Advisory for west-central Minnesota until winds
diminish early this evening. Elsewhere, patchy blowing snow will
likely continue into the early evening, but the impacts to visibility
should remain fairly minor. Temperatures will continue to fall
through the night as Arctic high pressure moving into the region
creates strong cold air advection. Expanded the ongoing Wind Chill
Advisory into south-central Minnesota, with wind chills of 25 to 35
below expected into Wednesday morning. Farther east, it will still be
cold with wind chills of -15 to
-25 expected.
Cold air advection continues through the Day on Wednesday, with most
of western Minnesota remaining below zero and highs only reaching
the low to mid single digits across eastern Minnesota and west-
central Wisconsin. Wnd chills could remain close to -25 across far-
western Minnesota, but plenty of sunshine during the day should
limit any wind chill concerns. Winds will eventually weaken Wednesday
night, which will allow for temperatures to plummet where skies
remain clear overnight. Lows of -20 to -25 look likely across west-
central Minnesota, with lows in the negative teens likely elsewhere.
Winds will become calm overnight, which may neutralize the overall
wind chill threat. However, if speeds remain above 5 mph, then
Advisory- level wind chills look possible across all of Minnesota,
and may reach warning-criteria across western Minnesota. Thursday's
temperatures look similar to Wednesday, although winds will be
lighter with High pressure centered over the region. Winds eventually
pick up late Thursday night, this time out of the south, which could
lead to another night of Wind Chill headlines before temperatures
begin to really warm after sunrise.
The only real shot of precipitation this week comes Friday night into
Saturday, when a weak clipper skirts along the US-Canada border. This
track would keep most of the snowfall across northern Minnesota, but
the NBM probabilities still show fairly high chances for at least a
dusting of snow across central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.
probabilities are quite low for amounts greater than one and greater
than two inches, so this looks to be a half inch to inch type of
event. temperatures keep the roller coaster trend going over the
weekend and into next week, with above normal temperatures Saturday
and Tuesday sandwiching a brief spell of below-normal temperatures
Sunday-Monday.
