Arctic air is firmly entrenched now with widespread temperatures in
the negative teens. With several more hours of cooling to go, should
see some -20s before modifying as the slowly strengthening sun angle
does its work later this morning. Highs will still remain below zero
and winds around 10 mph will continue the -20s to -30s wind chills.
The center of the high will sink southeast across southwest MN late
this afternoon and into northern and eastern IA by midnight. Lighter
winds this as the ridge axis works east across the area should allow
temps to drop quickly. Expecting widespread -20s for lows, except in
the core metro. South winds will begin increasing quickly overnight
as the high continues southeast and strong low pressure passes to the
north across Canada. Temperatures won't modify immediately, so there
should be several hours of dangerous wind chills across MN. Issued a
Wind Chill Warning for most of the MN counties outside of the metro
through mid morning Wednesday. Lighter winds across WI should limit
the dangerous wind chill threat, but there could be a brief period
near sunrise where wind chills drop to just below -35.
Winds will become gusty Wednesday morning and increased mixing will
rapidly modify temperatures back above zero and into the 20s by
afternoon across western MN. In the 12 hour timespan from 3 AM
tonight to 3 PM Wednesday, temperatures there may warm 45-50 degrees!
Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph will likely create blowing snow concerns.
A Winter Weather Advisory could be necessary if the blowing snow is
widespread enough.
A weak low pressure system will impact the area late Wednesday night
into Thursday. This system will give us another opportunity for
light snow mainly across western Wisconsin. Model guidance supports
a few hundredths of QPF and that would roughly work out to a dusting
to a half inch of snowfall. Elsewhere, a few flurries can't be ruled
out as a weak frontal boundary moves across the area. Temperatures
fall off Thursday night as a high pressure builds into the region.
Sub-zero lows return but the good news is that winds are expected to
be rather light that should prevent wind chill values from dropping
much below -20F.
Otherwise, it appears we will be free of precip for the weekend into
early next week. A strong jet will dig into the eastern CONUS on
Friday, greatly amplifying the longwave trough moving east of the
Mississippi River. Subsidence on the backside of this feature will
once again build another high pressure across the Great Plains and
Midwest through the first half of the weekend. The pattern quickly
flattens out for the second half of the weekend into next week. This
will allow for warmer, seasonable temperatures to settle in for the
end of January and early February.
