Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 221 PM CDT Fri Sep 2 2022 .DISCUSSION...(This evening through Friday) Issued at 221 PM CDT Fri Sep 2 2022 KEY MESSAGES: - A few storms possible this evening across southern MN and WI. - Dry and cooler this weekend, then trending warmer than normal next week. At 2 PM this afternoon, the cold front was located from Duluth southwest to New Ulm and Sioux City. Temperatures have risen into the 80s area wide, with dew points in the mid to upper 60s ahead of the front. Cloud cover continues to decrease and there are yet no signs of cu development, indicative of convective initiation. Low level wind fields suggest the strongest frontal forcing is across northern and parts of western WI, where the best chance for a storm or two will be later today. CAMs are less and less optimistic for development this far west, thus reduced PoPs to low chance at best. Noticeably cooler and drier air will build in with high pressure this weekend. Highs in the 70s are expected both days with lows in the 40s, except low 50s in the metro. A couple readings in the 30s are possible, particularly in central MN and northwest WI. High pressure will settle from the Great Lakes to New England next week. With the jet stream remaining well to the north, quiet conditions will prevail (near zero PoP through Thursday) and temperatures will trend warmer than normal in the 80s. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon) Issued at 1202 PM CDT Fri Sep 2 2022 VFR through the period. A cold front will shift winds from southwest to north later today and this evening. ...Strong thunderstorms will impact portions of Rusk, northern Dunn,
central and eastern St. Croix, northwestern Chippewa, southern and
eastern Barron and southeastern Polk Counties through 645 PM CDT...
At 537 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from 6 miles east of Birchwood to 7 miles east of
New Richmond. Movement was east at 25 mph.
HAZARD...Winds in excess of 40 mph and half inch hail.
SOURCE...Radar indicated.
IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is
possible.
Locations impacted include...
Rice Lake, Ladysmith, Hudson, New Richmond, Barron, Chetek, Baldwin,
Hammond, Cameron, Roberts, Woodville and Glenwood City.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.
If on or near a lake, get out of the water and move indoors or
inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles
from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close
enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not
be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.
