.River levels are slowly falling back, with chances for showers and
thunderstorms over the next few days likely causing localized
impacts. Unless there is a direct storm over the parts of the rivers
already in flood stage, the gradual decrease in levels should
continue.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive
cars through flooded areas.
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood

Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 638 PM CDT Tue May 17 2022 .DISCUSSION...(This evening through Tuesday) Issued at 238 PM CDT Tue May 17 2022 KEY MESSAGES: - Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms possible Wednesday afternoon, primarily along and north of Interstate 94. - More widespread severe thunderstorms expected Thursday. Today-Wednesday... Scattered showers continue to develop along a weak boundary across southwest and southern Minnesota this afternoon, with partly cloudy skies elsewhere. Temperatures have remained stuck in the 50s under the cloud cover and precipitation, but have approached 70 elsewhere. Satellite imagery shows a shortwave approaching out of the Dakotas, which will cause precipitation to become more widespread across Minnesota and Wisconsin this evening as the best upper level forcing moves overhead. A few rumbles of thunder are anticipated tonight, but otherwise a few hours of light to moderate rain are expected this evening into early tomorrow morning, when the precip exits the area to the east. Rainfall amounts are generally expected to be between 0.1-0.25". Temperatures will be warmer Wednesday, as southerly winds develop in response to a cold front approaching out of the Dakotas. Highs in the mid 70s are expected across Minnesota where skies should remain mostly clear, but will remain stuck in the 60s across western Wisconsin where cloud cover from the morning system will linger into the afternoon. The warmer temperatures across Minnesota will allow for 500-1000 J/kg of SBCAPE to develop ahead of the front during the afternoon, and most hi-res models depict at least isolated thunderstorms developing across central Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Deep shear vectors will be 40-50 kts and normal to the cold front, meaning a few storms could become supercellular and create at least an isolated and sporadic severe threat. Storms will be rather high-based, so isolated hail and damaging wind gusts are the primary hazards with any strong/severe thunderstorms. Thursday... More widespread thunderstorms are expected Thursday as a surface low deepens and moves directly over the area during the day. Strong warm advection in the warm sector ahead of the low will create a narrow corridor of warm and humid conditions, with temperatures in the 80s and dewpoints in the 60s during the afternoon. SBCAPE values in excess of 2000 J/kg and deep shear vectors around 50 kts will create a favorable environment for severe weather in this warm sector Thursday. However, there is still some uncertainty with the timing of this system and thus where the warm sector of the system will be Thursday afternoon and evening when the window for possible strong/severe thunderstorms will be highest. For now, the system most likely takes a track the places the surface low and warm sector through southern Minnesota and into western Wisconsin during the afternoon. Thunderstorms developing earlier in the day would result in a more widespread severe threat across our area, while thunderstorms developing later in the day could limit the threat more to southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin. All modes of severe weather will be possible, but hail and damaging winds look most likely given thunderstorms will likely merge into bowing segments and clusters. More widespread showers and thunderstorms also develop north of the surface low Thursday night into Friday, but the severe threat is lower across these areas. Friday - The Weekend... Much cooler air invades behind the surface low on Friday, with temperatures 10-15 degrees below normal expected over the weekend. Friday will be dry once any lingering precipitation from Thursday's system departs during the morning. Cyclonic flow aloft during the weekend could result in isolated rain showers developing Saturday and Sunday afternoon. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Wednesday evening) Issued at 638 PM CDT Tue May 17 2022 Prevailing VFR conditions this evening, except some MVFR visibilities possible within showers across western and southern MN.
