Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 611 PM CDT Sat May 14 2022 .DISCUSSION...(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 128 PM CDT Sat May 14 2022 KEY MESSAGES: - A few isolated showers are possible this afternoon and on Sunday, but otherwise dry and pleasant weather through Monday. Today through Sunday - Several weak waves will swing around the upper low over southern Canada that will bring us a few slight chances for rain. The common theme for all of them will be a very dry atmosphere below 10k feet, with deeply mixed and dry afternoon boundary layers. Abundant dry air will really limit our precip potential. The first wave comes with a wave moving across ND and into northern MN this afternoon. This wave will bring a cold front boundary moving slowly eastward with isolated showers/t-storms around central and eastern Minnesota shifting into western Wisconsin this afternoon. This front will be moving into western WI during max diurnal heating and where we could see the best chances at an isolated shower, but a dry boundary layer has really hampered our chances of seeing measurable precip through the early afternoon so far. Instability is on the order of a few hundred j/kg, but given the inverted V soundings, we could see some gusty winds develop with any stronger cells due to sub-cloud layer evaporation. The next chance for showers is tied a shortwave that will be going across SoDak toward Iowa tonight. Trend with guidance this morning was to keep the precipitation mostly south of the forecast are. I've added an area of 15 to 20 PoPs for tonight into Sunday morning confined to along the I-90 corridor. The last shot at precip comes Sunday afternoon, when diurnal heating and convergence along a surface trough could to spark some isolated showers across central MN. Guidance doesn't support 15+ PoPs but this area will see the best conditions for shower development Sunday afternoon. Opted to bump temperatures up a degree or two on Sunday after collaborating with neighboring offices. This brings MinRH values into the upper 20s/lower 30s and could begin to highlight additional fire weather concerns, as of now they'll be limited as our winds should stay aob 10kts with occasional gusts up to 20kts possible in the afternoon. Monday through Wednesday - The Canadian upper low from this weekend will push off to the east, with shallow upper ridging building in from the west that will be flattening out into a mostly zonal flow by Wednesday. This will put us into northwest flow that has been a norm through much of spring so far, but for mid-May it will result in very pleasant temperatures. Monday will be dry, but by Tuesday, we'll start to see a baroclinic zone move into MN. This forcing will be battling dry air advection in at the low levels from a Canadian high, but have kept chance PoPs from the NBM for Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. There is still a fair amount of uncertainty on specifics both days, but instability looks limited, so we're not anticipating any severe weather, with QPF being pretty light. Thursday through Saturday night - Troughing will build into the western CONUS and will take on a positive tilt, which this far out in the warm season tends to lead to a lower confidence forecast. Guidance ejects multiple waves of energy from the trough into the central CONUS. This will set the stage for an active second half of the week as models suggest a quasi-stationary frontal boundary setting up across the Plains into the Great Lakes region. There continues to be quite a bit of spread between models and from run-to- run in individual models this period. The result when blending guidance together in these sorts of situations is what we got from the NBM this afternoon, endless chance PoPS for Wednesday through Saturday. As we draw closer to the end of next week and get some more clarity on the timing of the waves, we'll definitely have dry periods. There could also be some better chances for stronger storms and heavier rain, but those details are difficult to focus on this far out. One area of higher confidence is temperatures.
