.DISCUSSION...(Today through Friday)
Issued at 311 AM CDT Sat Jun 18 2022
KEY MESSAGES:
- Excessive Heat Sunday through Monday night
- Marginal Risk of severe thunderstorms Monday.
Heat begins to build across western Minnesota today as amplified
upper-level ridging very warm temepratures aloft edge eastwards into
the Upper Midwest. Temperatures in the low to mid 90s are expected
this afternoon across western Minnesota, but relatively dry dewpoints
in the mid 60s will keep heat indices below 100. A wide gradient in
temperatures sets up from west to east, with highs decreasing to the
low 80s across eastern Minnesota and to the mid 70s across western
Wisconsin. There is a chance for a few isolated showers and
thunderstorms across central Minnesota late this morning into early
afternoon as a weak impulse rounds the apex of the ridge across
northern Minnesota. Otherwise, dry conditions are expected with
mostly sunny skies.
The heat builds and becomes more widespread Sunday through Monday as
the axis of the upper-level ridge moves over the area. Forecast
trends tonight suggest temperatures may be trending a bit cooler,
with highs more in the mid to upper 90s as opposed to the upper 90s
to low 100s. However, this is because guidance has trended higher
with dewpoint temperatures, with very muggy values in the upper 60s
to low 70s appearing likely. The net result is that heat index values
remain mainly unchanged, with values of 100-105 likely Sunday across
most of the Minnesota portion of the CWA, and more widespread values
around 105 on Monday. Little relief from the heat is expected
overnight with overnight lows largely remaining above the mid 70s. Kept
the Excessive Heat Watch going from Sunday afternoon through Monday
night to account for the fairly long duration of this heat event. An
upgrade to an Excessive Heat Warning is likely for the Twin Cities
metro, and possible across western Minnesota. Meanwhile, Heat
Advisories will likely be needed elsewhere. The heat will subside
somewhat on Tuesday with temperatures lowering onto the mid to upper
80s, however, temperatures will stay warmer than normal through the
rest of the week with highs likely in the upper 80s to low 90s.
The best chance for precipitation next week comes on Monday, as
heights above the region begin to decrease and a shortwave moves
across the northern tier of the CONUS, Thunderstorms coverage looks
to be fairly spotty south of this shortwave across central/southern
Minnesota and western Wisconsin, but high instability values mean any
storms that do develop could become strong to severe. The SPC has a
broad Marginal Risk of severe weather Monday, and
upgrades/refinements to this outlook will likely come as the picture
becomes clearer on where thunderstorms are most likely. Sporadic
thunderstorms chances are possible through the rest of the week, but
look more likely towards the end of the week and next weekend.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon)
Issued at 100 PM CDT Sat Jun 18 2022
Clear skies will continue to provide VFR categories for most TAF
sites over the next few hours. Scattered high clouds are expected to
move in from north to south this evening through tomorrow morning.
Most of the cloud cover is expected to remain closer to RNH and EAU,
along with a chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm.
Confidence still remains too low to include in the TAF.
Southeasterly wind pattern remains unchanged thorough tonight
with gusty conditions 15-20kts this afternoon and gusts between
20-30 kts then transitioning to southerly by tomorrow. Overnight, a
strengthening low-level jet will produce 40-45 kt LLWS, however will
reduce by sunrise Sunday.
KMSP...No additional concerns.
