LIFR/IFR CIGs will prevail across the entire region through midday
Thursday. Patchy fog and very light drizzle are possible at times
late tonight through Thursday morning along with occasional
lowering of CIGs into VLIFR category. CIGs will lift to MVFR
levels Thursday afternoon, with occasional breaks resulting in
scattered clouds and VFR conditions. Winds will generally be
light and variable overnight into Thursday morning, but
predominately from the east to northeast at around 5 knots. Winds
will then increase slightly on Thursday from the southwest at 5
to 10 knots ahead of a strong cold front, shifting toward to
northwest at 15 knots with gusts to 30 knots by midnight. /22

A strong upper level shortwave digs a mean upper trough south over
the Plains from a closed low over the northern US/southern Canada
Plains. A surface ridge stretching southwest over the Southeast
shifts east in response to a strong cold front moving east from
the Plains to over the Mississippi River. Southerly flow returns
to the Southeast Thursday, but moisture return modest, with weak
low level flow ahead of the front. Precipitable h20 values rise to
around 0.8" by Thursday evening. With the modest moisture return
over the forecast area, rain chances will be minimal and confined
to more unstable areas south of the coast in the Near Term.
Isolated rainshowers ahead of the approaching front are expected
to to work their way to the western border of the forecast area
Thursday afternoon, but for this package, the land portion of the
forecast area is expected to remain dry through the Near Term.
With the return of southerly flow to the forecast area,
temperatures below seasonal norms today (expected to top out in
the low to mid 50s) rise to around to above seasonal norms on
Thursday. Around 60 well north of Highway 84 to mid to upper 60s
along and south of I-65 are expected. With overcast skies over the
forecast area tonight helping to limit overnight radiational
cooling, low temperatures well above seasonal norms are expected,
dropping into the low to mid 40s.
With winds easing over the marine portion of the forecast area into
tonight, the High Risk of rip currents will decrease to a moderate.
With the return of onshore flow Thursday, the risk will increase
back to high ahead of the coming cold front. Strong offshore flow
behind the front will quickly shut off any onshore swell, and the
risk will quickly fall back to low by Friday night.

SHORT TERM...
(Thursday night through Saturday night)

Still very little overall change to the short term forecast from
previous. Guidance continues to remain in strong agreement that
the arctic front will move into the forecast area sometime mid to
late Thursday night and then sweeping east of the region by early
Friday morning.
The best upper level dynamics continue to be located well north of
the area, but the strength of the front may help to produce some
light showers along or just ahead of the front early Thursday
evening. This precipitation will likely be very light and should
be east of the area (or dissipated) before the much colder air
begins to filter into our area later Thursday night. Various
forecast sounding profiles indicate deep layer above freezing
during the time of the best precip potential (which is pretty low
as it is), then quickly drying aloft as the lower level wedge of
very cold air begins to move into our area after midnight.
Temperatures will plummet in the wake of the front late Thursday
night, with lows by daybreak Friday morning in the teens well
inland with likely 20s well south to just north of the coast,
where temps should be around 30 by that time. Strong cold air
advection will be in place on Friday, with many inland areas will
struggling to rise above freezing. Even areas as far south as the
I-10 corridor may be no warmer than mid to upper 30s for high
temperatures on Friday. A Hard Freeze Warning is now in effect for
inland areas of southeast MS, and inland areas of southwest and
south central AL for late Thursday night. It should be noted that
some of the higher-res guidance is coming in even colder for
daytime highs on Friday, so we will be monitoring this. The
shallow nature of the extremely cold airmass may be presenting
some problems in the models. Wind Chill Advisories are also going
into effect, initially for late Thursday night through Friday
night. Wind chill temperatures Thursday night will be in the
single digits and teens for most locations, and only slightly
warmer during the day on Friday before falling back into the
single digits Friday night. Wind Chill Advisories will likely be
extended into the weekend.
Friday night actual low temps will be extremely cold again, but
remain a bit on the tricky side with the approach of a possible
secondary shortwave aloft, which could spread some mid and high
level clouds across the area. This could potentially limit
overnight low temperatures to some degree, but with the strong
cold air advection pattern persisting, still looking at a
likelihood of a hard freeze for essentially the entire area Friday
night. Low temperatures mostly in the mid to upper teens over all
inland areas and low 20s expected southward all the way to the
coast. Given the potential for some cloud cover and the strong
pressure gradient keeping winds up Friday night, have decided to
leave the Hard Freeze Watch in effect for Friday night for the
entire area. May have to make some adjustments with regard to
coverage, but most if not all of this Watch will almost certainly
be upgraded to a Hard Freeze Warning on the next forecast cycle.
Only slightly warmer during the day on Saturday, with highs
ranging from the low to mid 30s inland and mid to upper 30s closer
to the coast. Another hard freeze is likely though on Saturday
night (Christmas Eve), with low temps once again ranging from the
teens over most inland areas to the low to mid 20s along the
coast.
In addition to the Hard Freeze Warnings and Watches, a Wind Chill
Advisory (for wind chills of 10 degrees or less) will go into
effect around midnight Thursday night for all inland areas and is
valid through the day on Friday. This Advisory will almost
certainly be extended southward to cover the entire area for
Friday night into early Saturday morning. /12
LONG TERM...
(Sunday through Wednesday)

Sunday (Christmas Day) will begin with hard freezing conditions
early, while everyone is finding out what Santa brought them, but
daytime temperatures should finally begin to rebound, remaining in
the mid to upper 30s along and north of the Highway 84 corridor,
but lower 40s south of there and even some mid 40s south of the
I-10 corridor. But, even on Sunday night, we will still be looking
at lows in the teens and 20s across most of the area (except
immediate coast where there will be some 30s) as the arctic high
will be centered over the TN Valley area. Temps will then begin to
show a modest moderation during the day on Monday and Tuesday
with highs warming into the mid 40s and even a few lower 50s.
Wednesday will be even warmer, with highs rising into the upper
50s and lower 60s. Lows Monday night in the mid to upper 20s
inland and low to mid 30s coastal, improving to around 30 inland
to the low to mid 50s coastal by Tuesday night. Looking at a
primarily dry forecast during the extended term. /12

A surface low over the eastern Gulf of Mexico moves off tonight
and a surface ridge moves east over the forecast area later
tonight into Thursday, bringing light onshore flow back to area
waters Thursday. A strong cold front moving over area waters
Thursday night will usher in very strong offshore winds in a short
period (about 6hrs). A Gale Warning has been issued for all area
waters starting 03z/9pm Thursday evening and lasting through
Friday. Winds will gradually ease into and through the weekend,
but are expected to remain moderate to strong over open Gulf
waters into Sunday. /16
