..ENHANCED RISK (LEVEL 3 OR 5) OF SEVERE WEATHER ACROSS OUR ENTIRE
AREA WEDNESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT...
NEAR TERM /Now Through Wednesday night/...For the most part, we
are not looking at many changes with regard to the anticipated
Wednesday and Wednesday night severe weather event. Synoptically the
large longwave upper trough moving into the central CONUS tonight
will become slightly negatively tilted as it approaches the Lower
Mississippi River Valley from the west. This results in increasing
divergent flow aloft over our area, especially Wednesday afternoon
and Wednesday evening, with a lobe of shortwave energy swinging into
the southeast side of of the upper trough at the same time. At the
surface, a warm front just offshore this evening will slowly lift
toward the coast through early Wednesday morning, then inland across
our area during the day on Wednesday, bringing in steadily
increasing moisture and instability.
The primary event will come on Wednesday, when a broken QLCS moves
east across our area. This still appears to be primarily a late
afternoon and through the evening event for our area. Most of the
CAM's are in pretty good agreement with this, but the WRF-ARW
indicates the potential for two different lines, one approaching our
area (from around Choctaw county southwest across our southeast MS
counties) by around 4-7 am in association with a piece of upper
energy that approaches the area at that time. This lifts out, with
the initial line weakening, before the more significant line moves
into the area from the west later in the afternoon.
We will be looking at the possibility of isolated cells across the
region, possibly beginning as early as the predawn hours (4-7am) for
parts of southeast MS and along the coasts of AL and the FL
panhandle (even if the aforementioned initial line does not
materialize). Depending on the location of the warm front during
that timeframe, we could have a slight potential for a few severe
storms (including tornadoes) in the warm sector before the main
event arrives during the first half of the day on Wednesday. For
now, confidence is low on this development, but we will continue to
monitor. We have coordinated with SPC and now have an ENHANCED
(Level 3 of 5) risk of severe weather across our entire area
Wednesday and Wednesday night. It should be noted that there a
potential for this to be upgraded to a MODERATE (Level 4 of 5) risk
for at least a portion of our area with later updates from SPC,
so stay tuned.
The greater severe weather potential will evolve in the afternoon
with the main QLCS (possibly a more of a broken line supercells than
a solid line) moving into far inland southeast MS and southwest
AL by mid to late afternoon. Timing is still a bit uncertain on
when the line might first move into our northwestern counties, but
could be as early as 2-4pm. It is this line of storms that will
carry the greatest tornado and damaging wind potential, including
the potential for a strong tornado. As with the early morning
individual storms, some individual afternoon storms out ahead of
the line cannot be ruled out, and any of these could also become
tornadic. This main line (or broken line of supercells) will
progress east across southeast MS and southwest AL during the late
afternoon and into the evening hours, approaching the I-65
corridor by around 7-10pm. A significant tornado potential will
persist during this time period, with the risk of a strong tornado
continuing. There will also be a significant threat of damaging
winds as well. The line of storms will move east of I-61 during
the late evening hours, and primarily impact south central AL and
the western FL panhandle during this time, with the storms and
severe weather threat then ending across the area by around 2am
Thursday. There will still be a damaging wind and tornado threat
over these areas, but the threat should be diminishing by this
time.
Guidance continues to advertise a very robust system. Still looking
at an 850 jet upwards of around 60 knots over our area by around 6pm
Wednesday evening. SBCAPE increases to around 1500 J/KG across most
of the region through the course of the day, becoming maximized
(especially along our coastal counties) at upwards of 2500 J/KG by
the early evening hours. Coincident with the increased instability
is 60kts of EBWD effective wind shear and 0-1km helicities of 200-
400m^2/s^2. This all portends to the possibility of at least a
few strong tornadoes.
Temperatures will remain above normal tonight and Wednesday, with
lows overnight mainly in the low to mid 60s and highs on Wednesday
in the low to mid 70s. Temperatures cool of substantially in the
wake of the front Wednesday night, with lows ranging from the
low/mid 40s over our northwestern counties, to the low/mid 50s
southeast and coastal counties. /12
SHORT TERM...
(Thursday through Friday night)

Southwesterly flow aloft will largely persist through Friday
night as the large upper low meanders over the Midwest and into
the Great Lakes regions. The cold front will continue to advance
east of the area through Thursday morning with much drier and
cooler air filtering in behind it. We should see clearing skies on
Thursday as precipitable water values decrease to around 0.5
inches or less. The dry and cool temperatures will persist into
Friday as surface ridging builds in from the west. Temperatures
on Thursday should top out in the upper 50s and lower 60s along
and west of I-65 and the middle 60s south of I-65. By Friday,
highs are expected to range from the middle 50s inland to the
lower 60s along the coast. Overnight lows will fall into the
middle 30s inland with lower 40s at the coast. /14
LONG TERM...
(Saturday through Tuesday)

An upper disturbance is expected to slide within a zonal flow over
the region Saturday afternoon and evening. This upper support
combined with decent moisture across the southern half of the area
will bring a small chance of rain (around 25% or less) late
Saturday and into Sunday. Showers should generally remain confined
to the Gulf waters and along the coast where the better moisture
will be in place. Further inland, surface high pressure will
likely keep more subsident conditions in place. Dry and pleasant
conditions return on Sunday as the high pressure moves across the
area. Another upper shortwave is expected to slide over the region
early next week with guidance indicating a surface low developing
over the Gulf. There are still significant differences in the
placement and evolution of this surface feature, but overall
trends suggest an increase in rain chances especially along the
southern half of the area as we head into early next week.
Temperatures will remain on the cooler side through the period with
highs generally in the 50s with lower 60s along the coast. Lows
are expected to be in the middle to upper 30s and lower 40s. /14

Onshore flow becomes moderate to strong today ahead of a strong
cold front moving east over the southern Plains. This lasts into
Wednesday night before as a passing cold front brings moderate to
strong northwesterly flow to the marine portion of the forecast
area by around 18z/noontime Thursday. Moderate to at times strong
offshore flow will follow, lasting through the coming weekend. /16
