.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 434 AM CDT Sun Apr 17 2022/
NEAR TERM UPDATE /Now Through Monday/...Currently, much of the shower
and storm activity that pushed south over our coastal counties
has diminished. A few light showers remain and these are expected
to continue to weaken and dissipate over the next couple of hours.
In addition, visibilities continue to drop across the area and a
Dense Fog Advisory has been issued for much of the area for the
remainder of the morning.
Another day of potential severe weather is then possible today. The
upper level flow will start out zonal, but another, fairly
pronounced shortwave will progress over the region late Sunday
afternoon and through the overnight. A surface cold front has
stalled over the ArkLaMiss region and up into the Tennessee Valley
late Saturday evening. This boundary may sag farther southward
through the morning; however, as a surface low pressure forms over
the ArkLaMiss region, this boundary will lift back north as a warm
front by late afternoon. This feature will then begin to shift east
and, by early Monday morning, will likely be located over northwest
Georgia. Its associated cold front is therefore expected to progress
over the far eastern portion of the local area Monday morning. Deep
layer moisture will persist over the region, with PWATs ranging
between 1.4-1.8 inches through the day. As the cold front moves
through tonight, PWATs will be closer to 1.7-1.8 along and ahead of
it.
Overall, some scattered shower and storm development is shown by
model guidance this afternoon. In fact, it looks similar to the
shower and storm activity that occurred Saturday afternoon,
beginning over the north/northwest portion of the area and
progressing southward through the early evening. Aloft, global
models show an area of enhanced differential divergence over the
entire local area by late afternoon/early evening. This will then
shift eastward as the cold front moves over the region by late
evening. Both the GFS and ECMWF now show winds at 850mb around 25-30
knots, the indication of a potential weak low level jet (LLJ).
Therefore, the dynamics aloft do show a bit more promise and with
more model agreement as well. Model SRH values have also changed,
increasing to range between 100-150 m2/s2 from late afternoon
through the evening, possibly due to the better hint of a LLJ.
Instability values are shown to be around 1500-2000 J/kg, with bulk
shear between 40-50 knots. This is especially true over southeast
Mississippi and southwest Alabama, where the Storm Prediction Center
has outlined a Slight Risk of severe weather. Additionally, low
level lapse rates shown by model soundings are around 7 deg C/km
from late afternoon into the early evening, with mid-level lapse
rates between 6-7 deg C/km (especially over the Slight Risk area).
Soundings also indicate the presence of a dry layer in the mid-
levels. This will all aid in the potential for hail, at least
quarter-size if not larger. In addition, DCAPE values again range
between 800-1000 J/kg as well, which will also aid in the potential
of downdraft winds. Then, by late in the evening, the aforementioned
cold front will begin to sweep across the region. This will bring
another possible round of showers and storms for the late evening
and into the overnight hours. However, by Monday morning, this
activity will shift east of our local area, with dry conditions
settling in for Monday.
The main hazards for any strong to severe storms that develop this
afternoon through tonight will be damaging winds and hail (quarter
size or larger); however, with the increase in model SRH values, a
couple of brief tornadoes cannot be ruled out, especially over the
Slight Risk area of southeast Mississippi and southwest Alabama. In
addition to the severe weather threat, we will need to monitor for
flooding concerns. Our forecast storm total rainfall is between 1-2
inches over inland areas through early Monday morning; however, with
recent rains from today (especially over our northwest) and our
PWATs being elevated during this time, some areas will likely see
locally higher amounts which will lead to nuisance flooding and/or
flash flooding.
Lastly, high temperatures will reach the upper 70s to lower 80s this
afternoon. Low temperatures will then be cooler the beginning of
cold FROPA. Expect temperatures to drop into the upper 50s to lower
50s west of I-65 and into the lower to mid 60s east of I-65 late
tonight into early Monday morning. With cold FROPA, highs on Monday
will also be slightly cooler, in the 70s area-wide. 26/13
SHORT TERM /Monday night Through Tuesday night/...A northwesterly
flow aloft persists through much of the short term while an
elongated upper level trough slowly slides across Northeast and
western Atlantic. The cold front mentioned in the near term will
be well east of the local area by Monday night as a surface high
pressure continues to build in from the northwest. The surface
high pressure will slide east over the Tennessee Valley on
Tuesday, causing northerly surface winds to become more
northeasterly and then easterly Tuesday night. Given the subsident
pattern, model precipitable water values will remain around 0.5
inches or so. Dry conditions are therefore expected through
Tuesday night under mostly clear skies. Temperatures will be
slightly cooler due to the deep layer northerly flow. Lows each
night will range from the mid 40s inland to the mid 50s along the
immediate coast. During the day Tuesday, highs will climb into the
lower to mid 70s. /14
EXTENDED TERM /Wednesday Through Saturday/...Broad upper level
ridging will slide across the eastern CONUS on Wednesday as an
upper shortwave traverses the northern Plains and central Canada.
This will cause northwesterly flow to become briefly zonal. Both
the ensembles and deterministic guidance indicate another upper
level ridge axis setting up over the southeastern states on
Thursday and Friday. This upper ridge will amplify into the much
of the eastern CONUS and dominate through the weekend. At the
surface, a coinciding surface high pressure over the Appalachians
will move out over the western Atlantic by mid-week. This high
pressure will remain anchored over the western Atlantic through
the weekend with ridging extending well into the local area. A
persistent easterly to southeasterly flow will allow for decent
moisture advection, but the subsident pattern will keep conditions
dry through the entire period with mostly clear skies.
Temperatures will see a significant warming trend due to the
amplifying upper ridge and southeasterly flow. Highs are expected
to approach the mid to upper 80s over the weekend with lows
reaching into the 60s. /14
MARINE...Light to occasionally moderate onshore flow is expected
through the weekend. A moderate northerly flow will then follow
Monday morning in the wake of a cold front. Strong flow will then
develop Monday night, along with building seas. Winds will gradually
decrease somewhat by Tuesday evening, becoming northeasterly.
Moderate to at times strong east then southeasterly flow is
anticipated through midweek. /13
