stage. The river is expected to continue falling to below

to 8.4 feet by Saturday morning. Given it's rate of decline
and no future impacts due to rainfall, the flood warning is
therefore cancelled.

HIGH risk of rip currents along AL and FL panhandle beaches. A
MODERATE risk will continue along the beaches today and tonight,
with a LOW rip current risk then expected for the remainder of the
week. Otherwise, no changes to current near term forecast. /12

.AVIATION /17.12Z Issuance/...VFR conditions will be prevalent
over the next 24 hours. Still a little breezy this morning with
northwesterly winds in the 15 to 20 knot range, especially near
the coast. By afternoon northwesterly winds should subside to
around 10 to 15 knots, if even that. A light northwesterly flow is
expected tonight. /12

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 442 AM CST Mon Jan 17 2022/
NEAR TERM UPDATE /Now Through Tuesday/...The deep low pressure system
will continue to lift northeastward across the Mid-Atlantic region
and New England states today, leaving a dry northwesterly flow
pattern aloft in place across the north central Gulf Coast region
through this evening. A surface ridge of high pressure will
gradually build eastward across the Gulf Coast states through
Tuesday. GOES NT Microphysics satellite imagery shows low clouds
have now eroded across our area, and we expect clear skies
and dry conditions to prevail through the near term forecast period.
Highs today are forecast to range around 50 to the lower 50s over
interior portions of southeast MS and southwest/south central AL and
in the mid to upper 50s over the central and southern part of the
forecast area. Lows tonight will be cold with readings in the upper
20s to lower 30s north of I-10 and in the mid to upper 30s along the
coast/beaches. Highs on Tuesday should be a little warmer with
readings in the upper 50s to lower 60s across the region.
In terms of hazards, the Wind Advisory has been cancelled and the
High Surf Advisory has expired. The HIGH rip current risk was
scheduled to expire at 6 AM, but we have gone ahead and cancelled it
a few hours early. A MODERATE risk will continue along area beaches
today and tonight, with a LOW rip current risk then expected for the
remainder of the week. /12/21
SHORT TERM /Tuesday night Through Wednesday night/...Dry but
slightly warmer through the short term as we begin to moderate in
advance of the next upper trough to arrive by Wednesday night into
early Thursday morning. Zonal to slightly southwesterly flow will
develop ahead of the positively tilted upper trough progressing
eastward across the central US. This will allow for steady
moisture to surge northward on Wednesday as a strong cold front
quickly drops southeastward out of the Mississippi valley. Front
will likely reach our area by Wednesday afternoon over interior
Southeastern Mississippi then continue across our area Wednesday
night. Given solid moisture return ahead of the boundary and a
more neutrally tilted shortwave across the area, numerous showers
and potentially a rumble of thunder will be possible along and
ahead of the front Wednesday afternoon and into the evening. Will
need to monitor the instability ahead of this system as deep layer
shear values will be in the 40 knots range and low level curvature
in the hodograph. Fortunately this event appears to occur
overnight with limited moisture return (dewpoints in the upper
50s) leading to almost no instability and keeping any severe
threat extremely low at this time.
Temperatures will be on a steady warming trend with lows Tuesday
night climbing into the low to mid 40s. Highs on Wednesday will
also represent the warming trends with highs climbing into the
upper 60s to low 70s before cooling off as rain and the front move
through Wednesday night. Expect lows Wednesday night to be down
into the upper 30s to the northwest and low 50s to the southeast
as the cold front sits along the I-65 corridor. BB/03
EXTENDED TERM /Thursday Through Sunday/...Sunday/...Thursday through the
extended, upper level shortwave energy moves through the northern
end of an upper trough stretching southwest from the Great Lakes to
the sw Conus/nw Mexico. Shortwave energy at the base of the trough
over the US/Mexico border is slow to move off, with a more developed
upper low in the GFS slower to move east than the ECMWF. As the
Great Lakes energy swings through into Friday, a cold front that has
moved most of the way across the forecast area moves further south.
With quicker and deeper progression of the Great Lakes energy in the
ECMWF, the front moves well south of the northern Gulf coast than
the GFS. AS the SW conus energy moves east, the stronger energy of
the GFS moves the surface cold front north and brings rain back into
the forecast area wide for the weekend. With a weaker shortwave over
the US/Mexico border moving east sooner and the cold front
significantly further south, the ECMWF is advertising the forecast
area remaining under dry northerly flow. Also, significantly cooler
temps behind the front move over the forecast area for Thursday into
Friday night. Temperatures come in line by Saturday and remain
decently close into the coming week.
For the forecast, looking at the ensembles, the ECMWF ensembles lean
towards the GFS, so have adjusted the forecast towards the GFS for
the final product. The result is temperatures below seasonal norms,
and freezing temperatures returning to the forecast area Thursday
and Friday nights. Temperatures moderate upwards for the weekend,
but remain below seasonal. Have also extended the rain into the
weekend, mainly for coastal areas.

MARINE...A moderate to occasionally strong northwesterly flow will
gradually taper off today, but small craft should continue to
exercise caution over area bays this morning as winds still
occasionally gust to around 20 knots, and 20 knot and gusty winds
continue this morning over the Gulf coastal waters where a Small
Craft Advisory remains in effect until Noon today. These winds will
create a hazard for small craft, but will become light to moderate
northerly by tonight and then a light to moderate southeasterly flow
by Tuesday. Winds turn more southerly on Wednesday as another cold
front approaches. The front will push across the marine area late
Wednesday night, with moderate to strong northerly flow returning
Thursday and Friday. /12
