region this evening. Ceilings may also briefly lower to IFR
thresholds late tonight into early Tuesday morning. Another
concern will be the development of patchy to areas of fog across
the region, especially near the coast and into interior southwest
and south central AL. Visibility may drop to IFR or lower at
times, but for now our confidence was only high enough to include
a potential for near IFR ceilings and visibility reductions at
KMOB and KPNS late tonight. Will monitor forecast trends closely.
MVFR ceilings should otherwise prevail into much of the day
Tuesday as moist southerly flow continues. Isolated to scattered
SHRA and possibly a few TSRA may develop along and northwest of
I-65 on Tuesday. Southerly winds also increase to 10-15 knots with
a few gusts over 20 knots at times Tuesday. /21

NEAR TERM UPDATE /Now Through Tuesday/...Currently, weak upper level
shortwave energy is moving northeast over the Southeast, on the west
side of a building upper ridge along the Eastern Seaboard. A surface
ridge is stretching west over the northern Gulf coast, with best
onshore flow over the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Moisture
levels over the Lower Mississippi River Valley have crept up to 1.5"-
1.7" with precipitable h20 values of 1.5" or above analyzed along
and west of the Tombigbee River. From there, precipitable h20 values
drop to around 1.2" along the eastern edge of the forecast area.
For this afternoon into this evening, best chance of rain remains
along and north of Highway 84 as moisture influx over Mississippi
River Valley sees weak isentropic upglide combined with mid/upper
level dynamics as the shortwave energy moves east over the
Southeast. Model soundings show enough upper support for some
embedded thunderstorms over areas northwest of I-65, so have added
in. With best coverage of rain being along and north of Highway 84,
cooler temperatures today are expected over northern portions of the
forecast area. Temperatures topped out in the mid to upper 60s north
of Highway 84, with around 70 to low 70s south and upper 60s along
the coast.
Tonight, guidance is indicating a return of sea fog to the forecast
area as more organized southeast to southerly low level winds moves
warm, moisture Gulf air over cool near shore waters(around 60 to low
60s) along the Mississippi and Alabama coasts. Have added in mainly
areas of fog tonight over the southern half of the forecast area and
nearshore waters, with higher winds (around 10 knots) overnight
leaning more towards status development. The west to east gradient
in moisture across the forecast area and nearby will also create a
west to east gradient in overnight temperatures, with low
temperatures ranging from the low 60s west of the Alabama/
Mississippi state line to mid 50s east of the Alabama River.
Isolated rainshowers will also be possible overnight west of the
state line with the higher moisture values and stronger low level
flow.
Tuesday, another stronger upper level shortwave trough approaches
from the west, bringing another round of showers with embedded
thunderstorms developing mainly west of the forecast area, but
beginning to move over western portions of the forecast area. With
increasing subsidence from the building upper ridge along the East
Coast, combined with more heating, temperatures are expected to top
out in the upper 70s to low 80s across the forecast area, well above
seasonal norms. With the high temperatures bringing increased
instability (MLCapes of 700-1000J/kg to areas just west of the
Alabama/Mississippi state line) combined with Bulk shear wind values
of 45-55kts from the approaching upper shortwave, there is a
Marginal risk of strong to severe storms. DCapes values of 500-
700J/kg will add to chances. SPC has a Marginal Risk of severe
weather northwest of a New Augusta, Mississippi to Alberta, Alabama
line.
Lastly, with the steady onshore winds bringing increasing swell to
area beaches combined with an increasing tidal cycle, a High Risk of
rip currents is expected beginning Tuesday lasting through the week
until the a cold front crosses the area Thursday night into Friday
morning and swell begins to decrease. /16
SHORT TERM /Tuesday night Through Thursday night/...An upper
level ridge will amplify over the Gulf as an upper trough deepens
across the western states. This results in a southwesterly upper
level flow across the area between these two features. Several
shortwaves moving through this flow will push a surface cold
front southeast into central MS and northern AL. The strength of
the upper ridge will keep the front from moving much farther
south on Wednesday with the front likely stalling just north of
the forecast area. The front will move back to the north as a
warm front Wednesday night into Thursday. This will keep the main
focus for showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly to the
northwest of the area through Thursday. As the upper trough ejects
into the plains Thursday into Thursday night, the upper ridge
will weaken and allow the front to move back to the southeast as a
cold front. This will bring increasing rain chances to northwest
portions of the area Thursday night
Surface dewpoints in the 60s will provide a favorable
setup for areas of fog each night and the fog may even persist
near the coast even during the day. Temperatures remain well
above normal through the period. /13
EXTENDED TERM /Friday Through Monday/...Scattered rain showers
are expected as the front move through Friday morning through
Friday afternoon. In the wake of the frontal passage, a
surface high pressure builds in with a more zonal flow aloft.
This will bring dry and cooler conditions on Saturday. However,
these pleasant conditions look to be short lived as the next upper
level trough begins to dig across the Central Plains Saturday
night and into Sunday. Ahead of this trough and associated sfc
cold front, moisture levels will increase Saturday night into
Sunday with scattered showers returning to the area on Sunday. A
much colder and drier airmass moved into the area for the start of
the work week. /13
MARINE...A surface ridge stretching west over the northern Gulf
coast will bring light to moderate onshore flow through mid week. a
cold front moving across area waters late Thursday night into Friday
will bring moderate to strong offshore waters for the beginning of
the weekend. With warm, moist Gulf air flowing over cool nearshore
and protected waters will bring sea fog back to area waters through
mid week.
