show that begins tonight. High temperatures will range from the
mid teens to low 20s by late this afternoon.

Tonight through Thursday:
The combination of cold air move in with the trough out west and
warm air advection streaming northeast ahead of the wave will lead
to sharpening area of frontogenesis across portions of southern
and central Wisconsin tonight into Thursday morning. With wind
not much of a concern tonight and lift focused within the DGZ, did
boost the SLRs along the area where banded snowfall is expected.
Current probabilistic data shows a good chance for 3-6 inches for
area northwest of a line from Darlington to Madison to Fond du
Lac. It is possible if this banded snowfall lingers a bit longer,
portions of the advisory that have been issued for our northwest
tier of counties may need to be upgraded to a warning. That is
something that the day crew will need to keep a close eye on.
As the main mid-level wave continues to move east towards the
region Thursday, the area of snow will continue to push east
across southeast and east-central Wisconsin. While snowfall
amounts are expected to be lighter, especially across southeast
Wisconsin, did opt to pull the winter weather advisory all to the
way to the lakeshore Thursday morning through Thursday evening
due to snow ramping up and temperatures/wind chills plummeting
throughout the afternoon. By early afternoon on Thursday we should
wind chill values fall to -20F or colder across south-central
Wisconsin, with similar trends across east-central and southeast
Wisconsin through the afternoon and evening hours. Opted to lump
the hazards (snow and cold) into the one headline for simplicity.
Thursday night through Friday night:
While it appears that much of our snowfall will be winding down
Thursday night into Friday morning, a few ensembles continue to
show some wrap around snow make it into our area on Friday. For
now have about 1-2 inches of additional snowfall in the forecast
for Thursday night through Friday. The big story will be the
winds, with wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph still likely Thursday night
through Friday night. Snow falling or not, travel will be
significantly impacted as these winds ramp up with fresh snow on
the ground. Blowing and drifting snow will be a significant
concern, along with concerns for blizzard conditions still. We may
be looking more at ground blizzard concerns if we do see the snow
tapper off. While more urban areas may be a bit more protected
from blizzard conditions, rural areas will be hit hard with the
winds and blowing snow. Thus, maintained the winter storm watch
for Thursday night through Friday night.
Temperatures during this stretch will continue to plummet. Both
Thursday night and Friday night we will see temperatures fall
below zero for much of the area. In fact during the day on Friday
we may have a few locations struggle to climb above 0F. Wind
chills of -25F to -35F are expected during this stretch. Will need
to keep an eye on the high-end of these wind chills, as we may
flirt with wind chill warning criteria in spots.

Saturday through Tuesday:
Northwest winds will remain breezy Saturday with blowing snow
still a concern. Temperatures will remain very cold with highs
struggling to reach the single digits above zero. Winds gradually
decrease heading into Christmas Day. Saturday night will be quite
cold with temperatures plummeting to between 5 and 10 degrees
below zero, though it will feel just like home for Santa. Highs
Christmas Day will peak a few degrees either side of 10 above
zero.
The upper level pattern becomes a bit more chaotic heading into
next week with multiple ripples moving through a fast moving flow.
Temperatures will gradually moderate and there will be a few
opportunities for quick hitting bouts of snow showers.

Quiet weather will continue through the morning under high
pressure, with light wind and VFR conditions. Low clouds will
likely arrive from the south this afternoon, persisting across
most of the area tonight (VFR may sneak back into the southeast).
Snow is expected tonight across the northwest half of the
forecast area, with less of a chance southeast of a line from
Shebogygan to Janesville. Visiblities of 1-3 miles are likely with
the more moderate snowfall, along with continued low clouds.
The snow will then spread eastward across the forecast area on
Thursday, as a cold front sweeps through. Winds will pick up from
west to east during the afternoon tomorrow behind the front. Total
snow accumulations tonight through Thursday are currently expected
to be 3-6 inches northwest half and 2-4 inches southeast.
Though snow will be winding down Thursday night into Friday,
strong west to northwest winds will develop, with gusts of 35 to
45 knots likely...and to 50 knots also possible. This will result
in a lot of blowing/drifting of snowfall, which will likely
greatly reduce visibilities at times.

High pressure of 30.7 inches over the area will gradually be
replaced by a sharpening stationary front, west of lake Michigan.
Thus, winds will gradually come around to the southeast later
today and tonight.
Cyclogenesis will occur along this frontal boundary, with a
deepening surface low tracking up across the Great Lakes region
Thursday through Friday. As this low deepens to 29.4 inches and
lifts across the region, stout northwest to west winds ramping up
as the surface low pulls north of Lake Michigan Thursday night.
These robust winds will will ramp up Thursday night through Friday
night, with sustained winds to around 40 knots and gusts upwards
of 50 knots. It is possible that wind gusts could end up stronger.
These strong winds will favor the development of high waves, and
thus concerns for heavy freezing spray as an Arctic air mass moves
in late week. The Storm Watch remains in effect, as well as the
Heavy Freezing Spray Watch.
As this low lifts north into Ontario and towards the Hudson Bay
Saturday through Sunday, storm force gusts will relax, but we will
still have west to northwest winds gales around Saturday into
Sunday.
