An area of freezing drizzle shifted northeast through parts of the
area this evening, and resulted in slick spots on roads. Some warm
air advection and a supercooled layer of moisture in the low
levels helped drive this freezing drizzle along. Radar trends
suggest that this is shifting northeastward across and out of the
northeastern parts of the area late this evening.

The main area of snow continues to gradually push northeastward
into western parts of the area, and should continue to push into
northern and western parts of the area overnight into early
Thursday morning. It should then push east across the rest of the
area by later Thursday morning, as the main area of frontogenesis
with the cold front moves through. Timing and snowfall amounts
look on track for now, so will not make any changes to the
forecast.

Biggest impacts still look to be later Thursday afternoon into
Friday night, when snow will combine with strong northwest winds
resulting in blowing and drifting snow and possible blizzard
conditions. The snow may actually end Friday morning, though it
may hang on in far northeastern parts of the area through the day.
Still, the blowing and drifting snow will make for hazardous
travel conditions later Thursday afternoon into Friday night.

Tonight through Friday night:

The focus through the end of the week remains on the strong winter
storm that will have significant impacts through the region. Snow
will begin in the west this evening in response to a good amount
warm advection and frontogenesis, with a tight temp gradient
pushing into the area. The snow will gradually spread eastward
tonight into Thursday, as the cold front sweeps through, the main
trough approaches, and the surface low begins to deepen. The bulk
of accumulating snowfall for southern Wisconsin with this system
will likely fall this evening through Thursday, with some
lingering snow Thursday night into Friday. The higher amounts of
4-8 inches are expected across the northwest half of the forecast
area, with 3-6 inches southeast.

Winds will begin to pick up from west to east during the day
Thursday behind the cold front, as the persistent snowfall
continues. Though snowfall rates will decrease Thursday night
into Friday, winds will continue to increase during this period.
There remains a concern for high impacts with the wind. Gusts of
40 to 55 mph Thursday evening through Friday night will result in
significant blowing and drifting snow, with the potential for
blizzard conditions at times. Bitterly cold wind chills are still
expected later Thursday into the weekend, dropping to 25 to 35
below zero.

Decided to go with a Winter Storm Warning across the forecast
area, beginning this evening northwest half and mid-morning
Thursday southeast half. Though the worst of the conditions will
arrive with the increasing winds later Thursday into Friday, the
snow will get an earlier start. Still thinking there could be near
blizzard conditions at times when the winds are strongest, but
confidence wasn't high enough to issue a Blizzard Warning.

Saturday through Wednesday:

Dry weather is expected for the weekend as high pressure builds
in. The combination of lingering breezy winds and even colder air
behind the departing low is expected to bring continued frigid
wind chills for the Christmas weekend, particularly on Saturday
Blowing snow may linger into Saturday as well.

Still looks like a light snow potential Sunday night into Monday,
though there is less confidence in this than 24 hours ago. Temps
should gradually recover towards normal values by mid-week.

Freezing drizzle looks to be shifting northeastward toward
Sheboygan, but should move out of that area by midnight CST
tonight. Some slick spots on runways may occur.

Snow continues to spread into areas near, west and north of
Madison late this evening. It will continue to spread over Madison
and eventually to Sheboygan overnight, then spread east across the
rest of the terminals Thursday morning. Visibility values down to
1 mile or less are expected at times once the snow moves in, along
with IFR ceilings.

Winds should be light until the cold front moves through Thursday
morning into the afternoon from west to east. The snow will
linger Thursday night into early Friday morning, possibly longer
towards Sheboygan. Highest snowfall amounts will be northwest of
Madison, lowest towards Kenosha.

Strong northwest winds are expected to develop behind the front
Thursday afternoon and will be strongest Thursday night into
Friday night. Blowing and drifting snow is expected with these
winds, which may linger into Saturday. Blizzard conditions are
possible Thursday night into Friday night, with 1/4 mile or less
visibility values at times. Not sure how widespread these
conditions will be at this time, so keep up with the forecast.
These conditions Thursday night into Friday night will be the
biggest impacts from this storm.

High pressure overhead this afternoon will quickly move off to
the northeast tonight in advance of low pressure. The low will
deepen a bit by the time it reaches Lake Michigan Thursday
morning. The low will then rapidly deepen late Thursday into
Friday as it lifts through Michigan into Ontario, dropping to 28.5
inches by late Friday evening. Winds will become very strong on
the back side of the low as it deepens later Thursday through
Friday night, with winds gradually easing Saturday into Sunday.
Very high waves will accompany the strong winds. A Storm Watch and
Heavy Freezing Spray Watch remain in effect for this event for
the nearshore and open waters.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of east central
Wisconsin, south central Wisconsin and southeast Wisconsin.

.DAY ONE...Rest of Tonight

Light freezing drizzle will linger over areas mainly north of
Milwaukee late this evening, with slick spots on roads possible.

Snow will continue to spread into areas especially west and north
of Madison. Two to five inches of snow are expected tonight, with
lighter snow amounts east and southeast of Highway 151. Impacts
to the Thursday morning commute are expected, especially on any
untreated roadways.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Wednesday

Accumulating snow will spread east across the rest of the area
Thursday morning. Snow and blowing snow will then become common
by Thursday evening, followed by stronger winds later Thursday
night into Friday. Very cold air, strong wind gusts to 50 MPH and
blowing snow pose a risk of blizzard conditions and wind chill
values between 20 and 35 degrees below zero during this time. This
will be a very dangerous winter weather situation.

Bitterly cold northwest winds will gradually decrease on
Saturday, but concerns for blowing snow remain with continued
impacts to travel. Wind chill values between 10 and 20 degrees
below zero are expected through Saturday night.

Spotter activation will not be needed. However, any snow
