(Issued 936 AM CDT Mon Oct 17 2022)

Say it isn't snow!? Most of southern WI, with the exception of
the southwest part of the CWA, saw some of its first snow of the
season (not including the graupel observed last week). Although
the snow came a bit earlier than average (MKE average trace of
snow is 11/02 and MSN average trace of of snow is 10/27), it is
not the earliest (MKE earliest trace of snow was 09/23/1942 and
MSN earliest trace of snow 09/23/1928). Starting to see the
morning bands move out, but additional development will be
possible through the afternoon. However, with temps warming a bit
more into the upper 30s and even nearing 40F in some spots, we
could likely see more of a mix of rain/snow and even some graupel
rather than pure snow with the afternoon activity on the backside
of the low. Any precip this afternoon will contribute to wet roads
with a few slick spots, but not expecting accumulations.

Otherwise today will be blustery and cold with the tight pressure
gradient. Only looking at highs topping off in the upper 30s to
low 40s with gusts up to 30-40 mph. Precip is expected to tapper
off through the evening as drier air pushes into the region.
However, blustery conditions are expected to continue through
Tuesday before conditions begin to warm up through the second half
of the week.

.SHORT TERM...
(Issued 437 AM CDT Mon Oct 17 2022)

Today through Tuesday night:

Kept Freeze Warning going for areas that have not experienced a
hard freeze, though the clouds may prevent most of these areas
from reaching 30 degrees or lower. Will evaluate lows today and
see if freeze headlines for tonight and beyond are needed.

A band of snow showers continues to gradually rotate southward
into the Fond du Lac, Sheboygan and West Bend areas early this
morning. There is more of this activity toward Green Bay and into
Door County, all of which will continue to shift southward into
the eastern portions of the area this morning. This is being
driven by the surface trough and supported aloft by the 500 mb
trough axis.

CAMs are struggling with this activity, but it should continue
shifting southward across the eastern portions of the area this
morning. Visibility values down to around 1 mile were observed
just north of the area within the band, and there may be
reductions in visibility within the more organized bands this
morning. Not expecting much accumulation, as the northwest winds
should keep any snow blowing around and roads remaining wet.

As temperatures slowly climb today into the upper 30s, should see
more of a mix of rain and snow showers occur. Forecast soundings
are showing a rather shallow warm layer, so more snow showers
could occur this afternoon. Again, not expecting more than wet

The large low pressure area in the vicinity of the lower Great
Lakes into ern Ontario and wrn Quebec will lift nwd Wed-Wed nt.
This will allow the winds to decrease some from prior days. Wly
winds and warm advection will develop late in the day and last
through the night, as a weak shortwave trough and cold front
approaches from the nw. The weak shortwave trough and dry cold
front will pass on Thu. High temps will warm from the middle 40s
on Wed to lower 50s Thu. Any cooling from the cold front will be
brief as the meridional pattern quickly becomes zonal across the
nrn USA with high 500 mb heights becoming established. Sly winds
and warm advection will bring a return of mild autumn wx for Fri
and the weekend.

Scattered snow showers this morning look to continue, but with
warming temps into the upper 30s to around 40 degrees could see
this activity become more of a rain/snow mix. With any activity
expect lower visibilities and lower ceilings through the afternoon.
Should start to see showers dwindle from west to east this
evening as drier air pushes in overnight, but could linger along
the lakefront a bit longer. Otherwise blustery northwest winds up
to 30-35 knots with lower MVFR ceilings are expected to continue
through much of the period, but we could see some breaks in the
lower ceilings overnight into Tuesday. Stronger winds look to
continue as well for Tuesday as the tight pressure gradient sits
over the area.

A Gale Warning is in effect until early Wednesday morning for the
nearshore and open waters of Lake Michigan.

Strong north to northwest gales are expected across Lake Michigan
into early Wednesday morning, with strong low pressure remaining
over eastern Ontario. Widespread gales to 45 knots are expected
over the open waters, with a few gusts to 50 knots possible over
northern portions of the lake. For now, think these gusts will be
too infrequent for a Storm Warning, but will monitor potential.

Very high waves of 12 to 18 feet are expected during this period,
especially across the southern portions of the lake. Gales to 40
knots are expected over the nearshore waters during this period,
with waves of 4 to 8 feet developing.

There are also chances for thunderstorms into Tuesday morning,
with very unstable conditions over the lake and that unstable
layer reaching high enough for some lightning potential.
Waterspout potential lessens quickly into this morning, as the
gales develop.

Winds are expected to turn westerly Wednesday into Wednesday
night, and then southwesterly by the end of the week. Winds will
remain breezy, but are expected to remain below gale force at this
time. May see Small Craft Advisory conditions occur at times
Friday into Sunday.
