Tonight through Christmas night:
Although we are seeing wind gusts of 30-45 mph with a few spots
topping of around 50 mph, the blowing and drifting snow is not
causing as much of a reduction of visibility as previously expected.
Additionally looking at area road cameras, most of the major
thoroughfare across southern WI are open and fairly clear. Thus,
have opted to replace the winter storm warning with a winter weather
advisory for this evening through Saturday morning.
Despite the headline change, focus should continue to be on the
impacts of:
-Patches of blowing and drifting snow still possible
-Reduced visibility and creating slick/icy spots especially for
rural and exposed roadways
-Frigid wind chills of 20 to 35 degrees F below zero
-Use caution if traveling
Will continue to see the elevated winds and gusts tonight through
most of the day Saturday with pockets of blowing/drifting snow still
possible. Cold temps and wind chills will continue as well and
additional/extension of the headlines may be needed.
Otherwise, winds are expected to gradually weaken later Saturday
nigh through Christmas Day as the deep low moves off to the east and
high pressure builds down across the Plains. Also southern WI
will begin to temps rebound a bit seeing high temps in the upper
single digits to low teens and lows above zero on Sunday. However,
models prog a mid-level shortwave trough to develop and dig down
into the Upper Midwest later Sunday night into Monday. This
clipper looks to bring a quick round of snow across the area with
light accumulations generally below an inch.

Monday through Friday:
Looking ahead to start of next week, high pressure and upper-level
ridging builds in across the region for the first half of the week
bringing a warm up to southern WI. High temps might break the
freezing mark by Wednesday! EPS and GEFS suggest temps ranging
anywhere from the mid 20s up to mid 40s through the end of next
week. Some members even hint at the possibility of highs reaching
50F around New Years, but confidence at seeing them remains low at
this time given the difference in the model trends.
Nevertheless, looking much warmer compared to the past few days next
week through the second half of next week. Models continue to track
a low across the central CONUS for the middle of next week, which
may increase precip chances as we head into the New Year, but would
influence the temp trend as well.

Main concern for aviation continues to be the very strong westerly
winds with gusts of 25-35 knots through the evening along with
blowing snow reducing visibilites to around or below 1 mile at
times. Additionally could see some light snow works it way across
the area through the evening, but accumulations will be minimal.
Otherwise expect the windy and cold conditions to continue tonight
through Saturday with winds coming down a bit, but still expected
to gust to around 25-35 knots. Clouds are looking to bounce
around between MVFR and VFR as ceilings scatter out and fill back
in through the evening as well.

Low pressure currently located east of Lake Huron has deepened to as
it gradually tracks from Ontario into Quebec through the evening.
Meanwhile, a strong area of high pressure centered over eastern
Montana will gradually move into the the Plains through the weekend
and down toward the Gulf of Mexico later on Sunday. Strong winds
continue on the back side of the deepening low with gusts of 40-50
knots likely to persist tonight resulting in very high waves across
the Lake. Additionally, bitter cold airmass combined with strong
winds will likely result in freezing spray and ice accumulations on
any vessels. Winds look to gradually ease through the weekend as the
high pressure pushes eastward. Opted to stick with a Storm Warning
and Freezing Spray Warning until Saturday, but winds may fall below
storm force before the warning is set to expire.
