Patchy drizzle and a few flakes are persisting across south
central and southeast WI this morning. This seems enhanced by
maybe a couple of meso lows over Lake Michigan, per visible
satellite. It's not the perfect setup for that feature with the
steady easterly winds in place, so not quite sure if that's
correct. There is also some weak vorticity advection going on
aloft. The upper pattern is expected to remain relatively
stationary through this evening, but the afternoon may be a bit
drier without that vorticity advection.

Today through Tuesday:
Easterly flow off of Lake Michigan is bringing some patchy drizzle
and a few flakes to lakeshore areas mainly in southeast Wisconsin.
This is expected to continue through the morning hours and may
impact areas north of Milwaukee toward Sheboygan. Soundings show
some drier air working back in in the low levels but we'll have to
keep an eye on how the drizzle trends as it could linger longer.
Most of the area seeing precipitation is above freezing but
travelers may need to watch for some slick spots west of Milwaukee
and Kenosha as temperatures are around freezing.
Areas farther west from the lake are expected to remain dry
through the day with no sign of sunshine anytime soon. This will
result in temperatures not warming up to much with highs in the
mid to upper 30s. Southeast winds will pick up Tuesday due to the
tightening pressure gradient developing between the almost
stationary high pressure over the Hudson Bay and the low moving
from Colorado into Nebraska. Expect gusts around 30 mph Tuesday
with wind chills in the 20s.

Tuesday night through Sunday:
Our next widespread round of precipitation moves in Tuesday
evening and continues into Wednesday morning. Ample upper level
divergence, positive vorticity advection, warm air advection, and
moisture come together with the advancing low pressure system.
Looking at soundings there is a decent warm nose aloft and should
keep precipitation all rain at onset even with the pocket of
cooler air at the surface. With the deep warm nose and
temperatures in the mid 30s do not expect any brief period of
freezing rain. Most of the area should see around an inch of rain
with the initial round of precipitation. It will also be quite
breezy Tuesday night into Wednesday as the low level jet moves
through bringing southeasterly wind guts around 30 to 35 mph with
some isolated gusts up to 40 mph possible.
The 500mb low will continue to spin over the central plains
bringing waves of positive vorticity advection over the area into
Saturday. This will continue precipitation chances over the area,
but dry breaks remain possible. Colder air will wrap around the
low pressure center moving through Wisconsin Wednesday night into
Thursday resulting in a gradual transition to snow. Light snow
will then continue on and off into Friday and may linger into
Saturday depending on how fast the system exits the area. Light
accumulations are expected each day. Looking at ensembles the
probability of snow 1 inch or greater over a 24 hour period
remains low for most the the area. Better chances will be toward
central Wisconsin. One more note on the extended forecast, colder
temperatures are on the way for this weekend into the beginning of
next week. We could see lows in the single digits Sunday night!

There has been gradual improvement from MVFR ceilings to VFR this
morning, but it is not spatially consistent. Lots of uncertainty
in flight category today as ceilings hover around the 2500-3500 ft
AGL level. We should settle down to MVFR by this evening as low
pressure slowly approaches the region. Ceilings will continue to
lower into Tuesday, and winds will increase out of the east.

Winds become more easterly through the day today and then turn to
the southeast tonight into Tuesday. Winds will become gusty with
the tight pressure gradient resulting in building waves across the
western half of the lake. Small Craft Advisory conditions are
expected to develop by Tuesday morning due to waves and winds
gusting to 30 knots. Gales become possible Tuesday evening into
Wednesday night. A Gale Watches have been issued during this
period. As low pressure moves over the area the pressure gradient
is expected to weaken with winds turning to the southwest Thursday
and become more westerly Friday as the low departs.
