Well... These snow showers do not want to let up. Current radar
has a broad band of extending all the way back up through the
Upper Mississippi River Valley and look to continue through the
remainder of the morning and likely to continue into the
afternoon. Main driver of this activity seems to be some lift
along the base of a slow moving trough extending across the
region and saturation in the DGZ. These snow showers are more
pesky than anything, but are leading to brief drops visibility,
blowing snow due to gusty winds, and some minor accumulations up
to around half an inch on elevated and untreated surface leading
to slick conditions. Hoping to see this activity wind down later
this afternoon, but as most models are not handling this scenario
all too well, would not be surprised to see things linger longer.
Additionally, as any snow on roadways melt through the day, could
see things refreeze on untreated surfaces as temps tonight drop
into the teens.

Nevertheless this activity is minor in the meteorological sense,
but these types of events can lead to travel impacts as people let
their guard down. So if traveling, continue to use caution.

.SHORT TERM...

Today through Saturday Night:

Currently we continue to see some banded snow across parts of the
region. There is some uncertainty on what precisely is causing the
banded nature but at the very least it looks like there is at
least decent omega in the low levels that would indicate some
forcing, particularly around 925mb. There is some indications this
is some low level deformation that could be responsible for the
banded nature. In addition the DGZ is saturated and there is even
a bit of instability based on soundings. These factors in
combination seem to have organized a well-structured band that
continues to bring periods of moderate snowfall capable of
bringing a quick half inch of snow. Elsewhere where the DGZ is
saturated expect continual flurries perhaps through the morning
hours and into the early afternoon. Otherwise today expect the
upper level shortwave to continue pushing out of the area with
moisture in the low to midlevels decreasing as we head through
the afternoon which is why we expect flurries to decrease through
the afternoon.

We expect a dry period overnight tonight given a lack of moisture
but this will be short lived as another shortwave slides through
late overnight into early Saturday morning. This will likely bring
at least some snow showers across southern Wisconsin given a
period of deep moisture in the column and a decent DGZ depth. This
will also be associated with another frontal boundary sliding
through as well though this will play less of a role. Snow may
linger through the afternoon as CAA leads to steep lapse rates and
a continually moist DGZ gives the sense that we could see
scattered convective snow showers through the afternoon. Otherwise
Saturday looks to be a bit breezy with higher pressure sliding
south to the west of the area causing an increased pressure
gradient along with the CAA making for breezy conditions through
parts of Saturday evening.

Sunday through Thursday:

Sunday through much of Wednesday appear to remain mostly dry with
very little going on in the upper levels for forcing. There is one
system coming through Monday but it looks like to miss us to the
north. Otherwise the next best chance for precip will be Wednesday
into Thursday when we could get clipped by another shortwave that
also could miss to the north. Low level moisture also seems to be
an issue with these system which could change but at the moment
signals a decent dry spell for the region.

The pesky snow showers continue through most of the morning
impacting terminals across southern WI. This may bring brief
drops in visibilities, blowing snow, and minor accumulations
given the gusty winds. Think this activity will continue through
the remainder of the morning and more than likely continue into
the afternoon. Will keep an eye on if it will last longer into the
evening. Otherwise ceilings are bouncing between VFR and MVFR,
especially with any snow showers. Expecting this trend to continue
into the evening before lifting to mostly VFR conditions
overnight. Lastly, gusty westerly winds up to 20-25 knots are
expected to continue through the period as well.

Low pressure over northern Lake Huron will continue east today.
West winds will continue through the day with gusts up to 30
knots possible. Winds will turn to the southwest tonight into
Saturday morning ahead of another system. Gales will become
possible over the southern half of the lake Saturday morning as
low pressure digs through Ontario. As the front moves through
Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening winds will become more
northwesterly and gales to 40 knots will be possible across the
lake. A Gale Watch has been issued. The pressure gradient will
weaken along with the winds late Saturday night into Sunday as the
low lifts northeast and high pressure moves into the southern
Great Lakes region. Snow showers will also continue off and on
into Saturday night resulting in visibility restrictions.

The nearshore will continue with a Small Craft Advisory for breezy
winds and has been escalated to a Gale Watch Saturday morning
along with the open waters. This will continue into Saturday
evening before winds start to weaken a bit. Thereafter we will
likely need a Small Craft Advisory for a period.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Westerly winds will approach gale force today but should remain
below with winds only expected to reach to around 30 knots.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

A Gale Watch has been issued over the lake for potential wind
gusts to 35 knots or greater Saturday morning through Saturday
evening. Initially breezy southwest winds will turn northwest with
the frontal passage. The best chance for gales will be behind the
front.
