* WHAT...For the Heavy Freezing Spray Warning, heavy freezing 
  spray at a rate of 2 cm per hour or greater may rapidly 
  accumulate on vessels. For the Gale Warning, southwest winds 
  20 to 30 kt with gusts up to 40 kt and waves 8 to 13 ft 
  expected.

* WHERE...Northern Two Thirds of the Open Waters of Lake 
  Michigan.

* WHEN...For the Heavy Freezing Spray Warning, until 6 PM CST 
  this evening. For the Gale Warning, from noon Tuesday to 
  midnight CST Tuesday night.

* IMPACTS...Operating a vessel in heavy freezing spray is 
  hazardous. Freezing spray may render mechanical and electronic 
  components inoperative. Rapid ice accretion on decks and 
  superstructures may result in a catastrophic loss of 
  stability. Strong winds will cause hazardous waves which could 
  capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.

Upper wave is moving through the area now and clouds are starting
to spread into southern Wisconsin. These clouds have slowed the
decrease in temps a bit to our NW but the colder is noticeable
over northern WI and central MN and is headed our way. Once the
clouds clear later tonight expect temps to drop below zero. The
slight breezes overnight will result in negative teens for wind
chills. Then closer to sunrise gusts start to increase and we'll
have the coldest wind chills with much of the northern half of the
area colder than -20F for wind chills.

Not expecting much in the way of snow as these clouds move through
due to the amount of dry air near the surface. But a few flurries
are possible. The current forecast is on track and no major
changes are needed at this time.

.SHORT TERM...
(Issued 347 PM CST Sun Jan 9 2022)

Tonight through Monday night:

A Wind Chill Advisory has been issued from midnight CST tonight
until noon CST Monday for the northern half of the forecast area.

Strong cold air advection will linger into this evening, with west
northwest winds remaining gusty with a tight pressure gradient and
low level mixing. The winds should remain somewhat brisk later
tonight into Monday morning across the area, as the pressure
gradient lingers.

Passing 500 mb sheared vorticity maximum across southwestern
portions of the area later tonight into early Monday morning will
bring some clouds to the southern portions of the area. Some light
snow or flurries may occur near the Illinois border area, but no
accumulations are expected.

Northern portions of the area should remain mostly clear, and
this should allow for lows to drop into the single digits below
zero, with values around or a little above zero in the cloudier
areas. The temperatures are near the 25th percentile of NBM and
Model Certainty, and the spread is pretty small between that and
the 75th percentile. Ensemble members from EPS/CMC are actually
colder than the 25th percentile, with the GEFS more similar. Feel
confident with those lows near the 25th percentile.

This should allow wind chills to reach the 20 below zero
threshold for the Wind Chill Advisory. This is supported by the
NBM apparent temperature fields. The coldest wind chills may be
12Z to 15Z Monday morning, where values could dip to 25 below
zero.

Highs Monday will only reach the single digits above zero, as the
Arctic high approaches from the northwest. Wind chills will be in
the 10 below to 15 below zero range in the afternoon and evening.
Lows Monday night will actually be a little colder than tonight,
using near the 25th percentile of NBM/Model Certainty values into
the single digits below zero. The EPS/CMC ensemble members are in
the teens below zero, with the GEFS more like the 25th percentile.
Again, went near the 25th percentile for lows.

Winds will become weak Monday night, as the Arctic high passes to
the southwest, so wind chill values may not reach advisory
levels. Will have to watch trends here with later model runs.

.LONG TERM...

Tuesday through Sunday:

Southerly winds will increase behind departing high pressure on
Tuesday, starting steady WAA over the region. Temperatures will
begin the day in the negative single digits around sunrise. They
will slowly climb through the day and into the overnight hours,
reaching the upper 20s, before a dry, weakening cold front passes
over the western Great Lakes early Wednesday morning.

Through the day on Wednesday and into Thursday, a sharp trough
will dig over the eastern US, and a ridge will build northward
over the Rockies. Wisconsin will be somewhere in the middle of
these two features, keeping our highs comparatively mild around
freezing for both days, with relatively dry but cloudy
conditions.

Our next big weather maker looks like it'll move through on
Friday, as both the ECMWF and Canadian still show the potential
for snow as a low over the northern plains and a low over the
southern plains phase over the middle Mississippi Valley.
Meanwhile, the GFS fails to phase these two lows, and we largely
get missed by snow to our north.

We'll be very cautiously optimistic with this one for all of you
snow lovers out there. Phasing systems are fickle and their paths
can be highly variable, so we'll keep an eye on this one in the
extended period as Friday draws closer.

Behind this system, cooler temperatures will return for the end
of the weekend, but bitter cold conditions are not expected at the
moment.

An upper wave moves across the area tonight with clouds at or
above 5,000ft spreading S/SE over southern Wisconsin. A few
flurries are possible mainly for KMSN and KJVL but observations to
our NW suggest nothing is actually reaching the surface. The
clouds clear late tonight with VFR conditions expected through the
TAF period. Winds stay breezy out of the W/NW tonight. Gusts up to
20kts return after 14-16z Monday morning and will continue into
the early evening hours before starting to taper off.

West to northwest gusts to 30 knots are expected into tonight over
the nearshore and open waters of Lake Michigan, with northwest
gusts to 25 knots on Monday over the nearshore waters. The Small
Craft Advisory continues for the nearshore waters until 3 PM CST
Monday afternoon.

The Heavy Freezing Spray Warning continues for the northern two
thirds of Lake Michigan until 6 PM CST Monday evening. This looks
on track, with the combination of gusty winds and very cold
temperatures over the lake. The heavy freezing spray may be
limited to the far northern portions of the lake on Monday, but
won't make any changes to the headline at this time.

A Gale Watch is in effect for Tuesday afternoon and night for the
open waters of Lake Michigan, for southwest gales to 40 knots
possible at times. High waves are possible during this period as
well.
