Clouds linger across the eastern half of the CWA late this
morning, but based on the latest satellite imagery, beginning to see
the clouds starting to break up. Expecting this trend to continue
through the afternoon as the surface ridge works its way across the
area while the center of the high slides south and east up and along
the Ohio River Valley. Temps are looking to climb into the upper 40s
and may even approach 50 degrees especially in the southwestern
parts of the CWA. Otherwise, lighter northwest winds and dry
conditions continue this evening before shifting more south to
southeasterly ahead of the shortwave trough expected to bring the
next chance of rain on Wednesday.

Today and Tonight:

The upper level ridge is now pushing in with higher pressure
pushing in as well, though it will be weakening as is pushes in.
This will keep us dry through at least tonight. Generally much of
the column is expected to dry out today but there looks to be a
layer of moisture around 850mb that could end up keeping lower
clouds around through the afternoon though some scattering should
be expected. Temperatures should reach the mid to upper 40s with
fairly low RH due to the drier air pushing in. As has been typical
the ridging will not last as another UL shortwave and associated
low pressure will quickly push in later tonight into Wednesday.

.LONG TERM...

Wednesday through Early Next Week:

Overview: An active weather pattern will bring multiple chances
for precipitation this week and into early next week. Temperatures
will exhibit a gradual warming trend with well-above normal
temperatures expected by the weekend, followed by a cool down back
to near-normal for next week. More details below!

Wednesday and Wednesday night: The northern extend of Gulf-rich
moisture will pivot across the area as WAA and moisture transport
increase during the day on Wednesday. With PWATs progged to
increase to around 1 inch and strong large-scale ascent accompanying
the WAA and approaching shortwave aloft, widespread showers are
expected to develop ahead of and along an approaching cold front.
Rain is expected to move west to east across the area Wednesday
into Wednesday night. This better moisture is being advected in by
an anomalously strong LLJ, with 40 to 45 knots a few hundred feet
AGL. Thus, expect the potential for gusty winds to accompany
shower activity as it won't take much to mix down the stronger
winds aloft. Mid-level lapse rates remain quite poor so continue
to leave thunder mostly out of the forecast. As the cold front
clears central and southern Wisconsin Wednesday night, precipitation
will come to an end.

Thursday and Thursday night: Dry conditions will prevail as large-
scale subsidence takes over as the shortwave traverses the Upper
Great Lakes and moves into eastern Canada. The combination of
mostly sunny skies and deep mixing, along with the pressure
gradient remaining enhanced, expect gusty west winds to prevail
on Thursday. We should see a nice warm up during the afternoon,
with temperatures warming into the 60s. Thursday night, high
pressure moves east across the area favoring winds to lessen in
speed and becoming easterly by early Friday morning.

Friday and Friday night: Longwave troughing engulfs the western
CONUS with lee cyclogenesis expected to develop in northeast
Colorado. A warm front extending off of the surface low will lift
north across the midwest, bringing another round of rain to
central and southern Wisconsin on Friday. Given the time of year
and easterly winds off of Lake Michigan the warm front may get
hung up along the lake for a bit, but by Friday night models do
show the front lifting into northern Wisconsin. With steeper lapse
rates moving into the area and MUCAPE values on the increase, do
have thunder mentions Friday afternoon and evening. Once the front
moves through, a more humid air mass is expected to move in, but
precipitation show begin to wind down overnight.

Saturday through early next week: The longwave trough ejects out
into the central CONUS, with a robust embedded shortwave progged
to lift into the northern Plains. However, deterministic and
ensemble guidance continue to diverge on the strength of the
shortwave energy lifting across the northern Plains and thus how
wrapped up the surface low gets. These upstream differences will
impact the speed of the cold front and when it will arrive to
central and southern Wisconsin over the weekend. NBM PoPs have
come down quite a bit for Saturday, but still have a chance of
precipitation mainly in the west due to the varying solutions in
the ensemble guidance.

Overall, the lack of widespread precipitation and strong WAA
advection will favor a significant warm up for Saturday.
Temperatures have been steadily increasing over the last couple of
days and if we remain dry expect temperatures to soar into the
mid to upper 70s. Probability fields suggest there is the
potential for some areas across southern Wisconsin to reach the 80
degree mark on Saturday! The speed of the cold front will have a
huge impact on temperatures for Sunday. Given the latest trends,
the cold front may move in as early as Sunday or as late as
Monday. If it is quicker to move in, temperatures will not be as
warm as currently forecast, it is arrives on Monday temperatures
may be warmer than forecast.

When the cold front does eventually moves through, there will be
the potential for thunderstorm activity. Will need to keep an eye
on the speed of the fronts progression across the area. A few
models are depicting flow becoming increasingly parallel to the
cold front which will slow its progression down and could lead to
some training precipitation. Eventually the main upper-level wave
will move overhead and give the cold front a push to the east and
will bring back cooler conditions.

Some MVFR ceilings and stronger northwesterly winds are lingering
over the terminals late this morning, but ceilings are expected to
break up and lift through the afternoon as surface ridging works its
way across the region. Winds are also expected to diminish through
the afternoon as well. Otherwise, light winds and VFR conditions are
expected this evening and overnight before south to southeasterly
pick up ahead of a cold front on Wednesday, which will also bring
the next chances for rain and lower ceilings.

Small craft conditions linger this morning with gusty northwest
winds. High pressure moves in from the west and winds will lessen
in speed throughout the afternoon hours. As high pressure moves
east of the region overnight, winds become southeast and remain
below 20 kt. A cold front approaches from the west on Wednesday,
with an anomalously strong low-level jet developing out ahead.
Given the strength of the winds expected to be in place just above
lake level, do not think it will take much to mix down southeast
to south winds of 35 to 40 kt late Wednesday afternoon into early
Thursday morning, thus have issued a Gale Watch. Opted to keep the
Gale Watch out of the nearshore for now, but it is possible one
may be needed. Otherwise, small craft conditions are expected on
Wednesday/Wednesday night.

Winds become westerly by Thursday behind the departing cold front.
Will need to keep an eye on wind speeds, especially over the
northern half of Lake Michigan as a period of stronger winds may
be possible. Attention then turns another strong system moving
across the High Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley this weekend
into early next week. This system will bring with it periods of
25-30 kt winds.
