1020 PM CDT Tue Apr 12 2022
.UPDATE...
(Issued 1020 PM CDT Tue Apr 12 2022)
Surface low pressure continues to lift northeast across northwest
Iowa this evening, with a warm front extending southeast across
eastern Iowa and northern Illinois and a strong cold front moving
into western Iowa. A secondary stationary front has developed
across southern Wisconsin and is the focus for light rain/drizzle
this evening as warm air advection/isentropic ascent increase
across the region.
Overnight, will need to keep an eye on the the remnants of the
ongoing strong to severe storms across central Iowa and northern
Minnesota. Given the drier mid-level air mass that is still in
place over southern WI, models do show a gradual weakening trend
but making it into our area after approximately 3 AM. The latest
RAP and HRRR suggest we maintain a pocket of elevated instability
overnight, which suggests that a hail threat may still linger as
convection moves in overnight and lingers into Wednesday morning.
Then attention turns to Wednesday afternoon/evening as the above
mentioned cold front moving into western Iowa this evening
arrives. Models are in a bit better agreement with the timing of
the front, moving across south-central Wisconsin around/after 18Z,
and then east-central and southeast Wisconsin between 21-23Z. As
the cold front arrives, the mid-level trough will take on a
negative tilt with impressive upper-level divergence overspreading
the region so there should be plenty of support for thunderstorm
activity. There remains some uncertainty in regards to the
strength of this thunderstorm activity, mainly given the skinny
CAPE profiles. Given the timing of the FROPA, think there will be
the potential for an isolated strong to severe storm or two
across southeast Wisconsin.

.SHORT TERM...
(Issued 418 PM CDT Tue Apr 12 2022)
Tonight through Wednesday night:
The warm air advection storms are remaining to our northwest this
afternoon. We should still see a few showers with isolated thunder
brush our northwest areas including the Dells and Monticello. The
evening will bring a period of low clouds and gusty southeast
winds.
A line of thunderstorms is expected to develop over Iowa and
southern MN this evening along a cold front. Decaying storms
should move into southern WI late tonight, but the coverage is
looking less widespread per the latest meso models. A weak
shortwave should move across southeast WI in the morning and
perhaps allow an uptick in the shower and thunderstorm coverage.
Instability looks weak with tall skinny cape, so severe storms
are not anticipated.
There should be a lull in shower/storm coverage midday until the
next shortwave pushes into southern WI just ahead of the main cold
front. This will be our best chance for severe storms, but it is
not looking that great. It will take some sunshine to get surface-
based CAPE. If we can manage that, then the low level shear is
strong and would support a brief spin-up tornado if we can get a
good enough storm. The instability will be debatable, but
somewhere between 750 and 1500 j/kg looks possible for a fleeting
moment. That would support marginally severe hail. Winds just
above the surface will be strong, so wind damage is our main
concern with any stronger storm.
The front will move across southern WI from west to east late
Wednesday afternoon and end our chance for storms. Some lingering
wrap-around showers are possible Wednesday night, but not likely.

.LONG TERM...
(Issued 418 PM CDT Tue Apr 12 2022)
Thursday through Tuesday:
With low pressure stalled over Ontario on Thursday, and deep
mixing over southern WI expected, very gusty southwest winds are
expected during the daylight hours. Our Wind Advisory criteria is
39kt/45mph gusts and model soundings show a decent potential for
reaching that. In addition, the GFS soundings hint at a
possibility of instability snow showers Thursday afternoon. This
is not in our public forecast yet because the NAM shows drier air
and there is not a lot of certainty yet. Either way, these snow
showers would be low-impact.
There is chance for light rain or snow across southern WI and
northern IL Friday as a weak waves passes across a stalled
baroclinic zone. Winds will be gusty out of the west on Friday,
but not as high as Thursday.
The low will finally pull away Saturday and we should have quiet
and cool weather for most of the weekend. The GFS tries to bring
our next system into southern WI already Sunday afternoon while
the ECWMF holds it off until later Sunday night. We will have to
keep an eye on this system for precip type and timing.

.AVIATION...
(Issued 1020 PM CDT Tue Apr 12 2022)
Low-level moisture has finally moved in this evening, resulting in
area of showers and lower ceilings. Expect IFR to MVFR ceilings to
prevail overnight and through much of Wednesday, with chances for
showers and thunderstorms. A few storms could be on the strong to
severe side, especially for terminals across southeast Wisconsin
Wednesday afternoon/evening. Winds will become southerly
overnight with LLWS expected across most terminals, then surface
winds become westerly as a cold front moves west to east across
central/southern Wisconsin Wednesday afternoon and evening.

.MARINE...
(Issued 418 PM CDT Tue Apr 12 2022)
Gusty southeast winds and building waves are expected this
evening, with winds becoming southerly later tonight through
Wednesday. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect. A cold front will
move through by early Wednesday evening and bring a wind shift to
the west. Southwest gales are expected Thursday as strong low
pressure sits over Ontario. The gales should linger into Friday
for the north half. No change to the marine headlines this
afternoon, but there is high confidence in needing to upgrade to a
Gale Warning.
