Temperatures are tracking nicely this evening, with temperatures
in most locations in the single digits at this point. Wind Chill
Advisory looks good, with -18 to -25 expected early tomorrow
morning across the Advisory area.

Tonight through Friday night:

As the last of the light and fluffy snows wraps up through the
late afternoon, expect an Arctic airmass to gradually push in
overnight into Friday as a surface high treks across the Northern
Plains and into the Upper Midwest. This system will bring in
bitterly cold temps to southern WI.

The latest models seem to be overdoing the cloud cover this
afternoon and have been trending on the higher side for
dewpoints. Thus given the latest satellite and dewpoints
obs/trends, it is looking likely that the stage will be set for
better radiational cooling with a drier airmass tonight and have
bumped the forecast minimum temps down a bit below the 25th
percentile of the NBM. Overnight lows look to range in the single
digits along the lake front to 10 below zero further inland.
Combine the cold temps with west-northwesterly winds around 5-10
mph and wind chills are progged to be even colder across to
southern WI. Looking at minimum winds chills to range from 10
below to around 27 below zero. Given the higher likelihood of 20
below zero wind chills further east, have opted to expand the
wind chill advisory to include Marquette, Dodge, Jefferson,
Walworth and all counties west.

Otherwise, the cold conditions will continue into Friday as the
upper-level ridge builds across the Upper Midwest and the surface
high skates down from MN into the Ohio River Valley through the day.
Only looking at high temps ranging from around 10 degrees inland to
upper teens closer to the lakefront. As the high pushes further east
Friday night, winds will begin to shift back to the south and a
swath of low-level WAA will start to work its way into the region
and help temps warm from around zero to the low teens through the
night into early Saturday morning.

.LONG TERM...

Saturday through Thursday:

Warm air advection develops over the area Saturday into Saturday
evening, as the pressure gradient tightens up with increasing
south to southwest winds. Highs Saturday should rise to near
seasonal normals, in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

Low level moisture and clouds will gradually increase by Saturday
night, ahead of the advancing Arctic cold front. Most of the
moisture advection passes by to the southeast and clips the far
southeastern parts of the area. This southeastward trend has been
consistent since yesterday. If precipitation were to occur, lack
of cloud ice and surface temperatures near or below freezing would
support light freezing rain or drizzle.

For now, left small PoPs in the far southeast parts of the area
for Saturday night. Not anticipating this to be impactful, but
will watch it in case of any northward shift.

After the front passes through Saturday night, strong cold air
advection develops on brisk west northwest winds and lingers into
Sunday. This will bring another shot of Arctic air into the
region. These very cold temperatures should linger into Monday
night, as the Arctic high pressure system passes southeastward
from the northern Plains into the Ohio River Valley.

West northwest winds should remain high enough Sunday night to
bring bitter cold wind chills to the area. Lows Sunday night
should drop into the single digits below zero across most of the
area, which is around the 25th percentile of Model Certainty and
NBM. These are also supported by almost all ensemble members from
the EPS/GEFS/CMC, some of which are colder than the current
forecast. These values seem reasonable with clearing skies and a
lingering snow pack.

Wind chills should drop into the 18 below to 28 below zero range
across the area. Highs Monday should remain in the single digits,
which with some wind will keep wind chills in the 12 below to 20
below zero range.

Winds will weaken with the high passing close the area Monday
night, so lows in the single digits below zero look reasonable
again. Wind chills will still be close to 20 below zero at times
Monday night, despite the weaker winds. This period of bitter cold
temperatures and wind chills will be highlighted in messaging
products.

Warm air advection develops Tuesday and should bring more
seasonable temperatures back into the region, lingering into the
rest of next week per ensemble member trends from EPS/GEFS/CMC.
Things look relatively dry as well through most of next week.

overnight, but otherwise, VFR should prevail through the next 24
hours. Winds will continue to decrease overnight as high pressure

becoming light from the west during the afternoon.

North to northwesterly winds will continue across the lake tonight
and give way to more westerly winds as a surface high works its way
across the Northern Plains and into the Upper Midwest overnight. As
the high skirts down from MN into the Ohio River Valley through the
day Friday, winds will become more southerly Friday evening into
Saturday. With the tightening pressure gradient between the exiting
high and the approaching low, expecting increasing southerly winds
and waves to pick up during this period and there is higher
confidence in seeing gale force winds across the open waters of the
lake with the strongest winds across the northern portions. Thus
have issued a Gale Watch for Saturday. Then as the low to our north
pushes east, it will drag another Arctic cold front across the
region and bring the potential for moderate to heavy freezing spray
later on Sunday into Monday before another surface high builds into
the region for early next week.
