As the low in southern Minnesota weakens, another low pushes
northeast tonight from the central US. Clouds have pushed in ahead
of this system and precipitation will gradually push in late
tonight into tomorrow morning though it will initially be fighting
some dry air that may delay onset of precip and may affect how
much precip we see early on as this pushes in, however later
Tuesday the column should moisten and allow for a fairly
consistent rainfall. We will continue to monitor this system but a
fairly wet few days is expected.

.SHORT TERM...

Tonight through Tuesday night:

The warm front is currently draped southeast across the area,
with temperatures up near Sheboygan in the 40s and low to mid 70s
across southwest Wisconsin. Tonight this warm front will retreat
westward as a pseudo-cold front with easterly winds taking over.
Expect cloud cover to increase overnight, with lows down into the
40s, except locally colder conditions in the Sheboygan area.

Attention then turns to expected rainfall starting Tuesday. Light
to moderate rain will move in from the south late tonight/Tuesday
morning, with off and on rain expected throughout the day. As the
upper-level forcing moves in Tuesday night, precipitation is
expected to pick up in intensity and coverage. Some areas may see
a period of heavy rain move through Tuesday night as a strong LLJ
ushers in some better Gulf-rich moisture. With some thawing of
the ground ongoing this should help alleviate any major hydro
concerns. Certainly we will see rises on local rivers, streams and
their tributaries, but the latest HEFS guidance suggests we would
need to see ensemble maximum precipitation for river concerns.

Wednesday through Monday:

The heavier rain will continue into Wednesday morning as the upper
level low remains overhead. Rain showers are expected to persist
throughout the day Wednesday as the surface low moves into
southern Wisconsin. As the occluded surface low begins to slowly
move out of Wisconsin Wednesday night into Thursday, there will be
a chance for a few snowflakes to mix in across the northwest
corner of our CWA. With the cooling surface temperatures overnight
and northwest flow aloft on the back side of the low there will
be a small window where there could be a full transition to
snowfall for central Wisconsin. Any mixed precip or snowfall is
expected to have minimal impacts and little to no accumulation.
The light rain and mixed precipitation will gradually come to an
end Thursday afternoon.

For the start of the weekend guidance suggests another low moving
into the Great Lakes Region from Canada. There is some uncertainty
with the strength and timing of this system, but it is expected to
bring a reinforcing push of colder air to southern Wisconsin.
This colder air does bring some more concerns for a rain/snow mix.

VFR conditions expected to continue tonight but as the low pushes
northeast from the central US tonight by morning we should see
rain start to push in with low CIGS. MVFR CIGS are expected at
first with only modest VSBYS restrictions but as the day
progresses and showers become more widespread and and perhaps a
bit more intense expect CIGS to drop to IFR and perhaps even VLIFR
with chances for MVFR VSBYS as well. Expect these conditions to
persist for few days possibly as a long-winded system makes its
way through the region.

Persistent east winds develop tonight and linger through
Wednesday morning, allowing high waves to build along the
Wisconsin shoreline. East winds increase in speed tonight and top
out at around 30 knots in the nearshore Tuesday and Tuesday night
as low pressure exiting the Plains tracks northeast across the
area. Across the open waters, east winds gust upwards of 30 to 40
knots, strongest across the extreme northern end Tuesday night
through Wednesday morning, where a gale watch has been issued. It
is possible gales may develop a zone or two south, but for now
issued the watch where confidence was highest.

Winds become north Wednesday night into Thursday as low pressure
exits the region. The next period stronger winds develops Friday
night through Saturday, with northwest winds increasing to around
30 knots. Gales may be possible during this period, but
confidence is low at this time.
