Area Forecast Discussion

(Issued 944 AM CST Wed Feb 9 2022)

Already saw a few reports of light drizzle/snow across northern
portions of the CWA this morning. Will continue to see chances for
off and on shower activity throughout the day with the cyclonic
flow from the cool side of the passing low to our north. And
combined with low-level moisture and ripples of mid-level
vorticity around the broader mid-level trough stationed over the
Upper Great Lakes, will likely see these chances linger into the
evening. Although temps are in the mid 30s, wet bulbs temps are
flirting around freezing so could begin to see the rain-snow mix
transition more to light snow, especially north of I-94, later
this afternoon with the CAA. Overall, not expecting much in the
way of accumulations, but a few showers could see brief periods of
moderate snow toward the later half of the day with the steeper
lapse rates progged in the model soundings.

Otherwise, forecast remains on track with colder temps tonight
into Thursday with the building surface high before warming up
ahead the late week system.

.SHORT TERM...
(Issued 425 AM CST Wed Feb 9 2022)

Today through Thursday:

A sfc low on the northern shore of Lake Superior will slowly
continue eastward today, stacking with a closed low aloft. Ribbons
of vorticity spiraling around this closed low will provide
impetus for showery precipitation over northern and central WI and
may cause some scattered wintry mix this morning. As the morning
goes on, there could be a lull in this activity and surface temps
will warm into the early afternoon to the mid 30s, spurred by
southwesterly sfc winds ahead of an approaching cold front. As
these surface temps warm, the closed low aloft will continue east,
causing temperatures to cool aloft ahead of the lagging sfc cold
front to the west. This would create a favorable environment for
instability driven showers going into the afternoon hours as lapse
rates steepen. These showers look to be mostly a rain-snow mix,
with more in the way of snow toward central WI where temperature
profiles will be colder and more in the way of rain over far
southeastern WI, where it'll remain warmer for longer. Any snow
accumulations will amount to a dusting, but there could be some
drops in visibility in the rain/snow showers as they will be
convectively driven.

Shower activity should wane tonight as sfc cold advection
increases and lapse rates become more shallow following the
passage of the sfc cold front. Lows will be in the teens with some
modestly gusty northwest winds.

Thursday will be dry, with a few peeks of sun as high pressure
skirts to our south. Highs will be in the upper 20s to near 30.

.LONG TERM...
(Issued 335AM CST Wed Feb 9 2022)

Thursday night through Wednesday:

Expect a swath of moderate to briefly heavy snow to move west to
east across central and southern Wisconsin late Thursday evening
into Friday morning. With strong warm air advection and dCVA
increasing across the area, there will be no lack of large-scale
lift across the area. There are a few forecast challenges that
remain, but overall it looks like around 1 inch of snow will be
possible along/south of a line from KMSN-KMKE, with better chances
of 1 to 2 inches north of that line. On the backside of the main
area of snow, when we lose cloud ice there may be a period of
lingering freezing rain overnight into Friday morning. However,
with warm air advection still dominating surface temperatures will
be gradually warming closer to the freezing mark during the
early-mid morning hours on Friday. Therefore, confidence is low
as to whether or not freezing rain will result in any significant
impacts at this time.

The main area of snow exits to the south and east on Friday, but
we could still have a few lingering light rain/snow showers around
during the day. There remains some uncertainty in how warm
temperatures will get on Friday, but Friday afternoon/evening
into Saturday morning an arctic front blows through the area and
will bring plummeting temperatures. As this arctic front move
through Friday afternoon/evening, if the low-levels can saturate
enough we may see another area of light, powdery snow move
through. Gusty northwest to north winds will also increase as the
front arrives. With the potential for a quick burst of snow,
stronger winds, and plummeting temperatures as the front drops
through the area, this will be something to keep an eye on. The
winds look to stay up Friday night into Saturday morning, pushing
wind chills down to 5 to 15 below by Saturday morning.

This colder air mass will linger across the region through the
weekend, with overnight lows mainly in the single digits. Day time
highs will gradually warm throughout the weekend, but Saturday
will certainly be the coldest day with highs in the teens and
wind chill values only in the single digits. Another clipper
system is progged to dig across the region on Sunday. There is
uncertainty in where this wave will track, but if the track is
favorable for our area we could see another round of dry, powdery
snow.

Early next week, models are in better agreement with the next
round of warm air advection lifting into the region. This will
favor a nice warming trend into middle parts of next week.

MVFR ceilings continue to spread eastward with the cyclonic flow
on the backside of the low passing to our north. These lower
ceilings look to continue through the remainder of the day
bouncing between 1.5kft and 3kft. Could also see some off and on light
wintry mix throughout the day. However, as we head later into the
day, better cold air advection along with steepening lapse rates
may bring a few moderate snow and/or mix showers across southern
WI. Any areas that experience these better organized showers could
see reduced visibilities and lower ceilings at times through the
evening. This activity should begin to clear out tonight as weak
high pressure briefly builds into the area overnight into
Thursday. Otherwise southwesterly winds will shift to the
northwest with the cold front through the day and may gust up to
25 knots at times this afternoon and evening. Breezy conditions
will continue into Thursday.

Low pressure of 29.4 inches will move across the northern edge of
Lake Superior through this morning, before moving into eastern
Ontario on by this afternoon. Brisk southwest winds will veer to
northwest and west tonight and Thursday as a cold front moves
through the region. Elevated waves will continue across the lake
into tonight. Locally, a small craft advisory will be in effect
later this afternoon into early Thursday for higher winds gusts

A strong area of low pressure is expected to move through the
Great Lakes Thursday night through Saturday, bringing elevated
winds and waves. Southerly gales will be possible starting
Thursday night into Friday morning ahead of the low, with the
possibility of northwest gales behind the low Friday night into
