.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build over the area from the north today. A
strong low pressure system will impact the area Sunday and
Monday, bringing multiple hazards. High pressure will build over
the area through mid week, sliding off the coast late week
ahead of an approaching cold front.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1010 AM Sat...Forecast on track with no changes needed.

Prev disc...Today will be the proverbial calm before the storm
as high pressure continues to build south into the area. High
clouds will increase and become more opaque late as a gathering
storm approaches from the southwest. It will be much colder than
Friday thanks to low level cold advection which will limit
highs to mainly 40-45 degrees.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SUNDAY/...
As of 645 AM Sat...As developing low pressure approaches from
the southwest, clouds will thicken and lower. Despite the cloud
cover, a relatively cold airmass will be in place which will
result in low temperatures at or just below freezing across most
of eastern NC just inland from the coast. This will be critical
as moisture associated with the low will begin to overspread
the area from the southwest between 8-10Z, and will begin as
light sleet, light freezing rain and possibly light snow,
especially in areas along and west of Highway 17. Although
accumulations are expected to be light/minor, a few slick spots
will form on roads in well inland, especially on bridges and
overpasses. Therefore a Winter Weather Advisory has been posted
for these areas.

Sunday...The mixed wintry precipitation inland will change over
to all rain by noon. Rain, heavy at times with possible
thunderstorms will occur across all of eastern NC, as the
developing low tracks from GA to northeast NC by evening.
Widespread rainfall amounts of 1-2" with locally higher amounts
will occur through Sunday evening. The SPC has placed the
immediate coast of NC in a "Marginal" severe threat for the
afternoon and evening for the potential for occasional damaging
winds and a brief tornado. Although shear will be strong, the
main limiting factor will be instability as CAPES are forecast
to be less than <500 J/kg.

Winds will be increasing late in the day with the strongest
winds expected along the coast where gusts to 60 mph will be
possible from Down East Carteret county to the Outer Banks. A
High Wind Watch has been issued for this area, with wind
advisories issued for the counties just west of the High Wind
Watch for wind gusts to 45 mph. Storm to Gale Force winds will
result in coastal flooding adjacent to the Pamlico Sound and the
Pamlico/Pungo Sunday afternoon and evening. The coastal flood
threat will then shift to the Outer Banks late Sunday evening
and continue into Mon as the low lifts north and the flow comes
around to the west. Please see the Coastal Flood Discussion
below for details.

Highs will range from the low to mid 60s coast to around 50 over
the coastal plain. There continues to be differences on how the
fast the precipitation ends with the faster GFS/ECMWF ending
inland in the late evening and the slower CMC/NAM keeping
precipitation through the early evening.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 430 AM Saturday...A complex low pressure system will
impact Eastern NC Sunday through Monday with several potential
hazards. High pressure returns Tuesday and Wednesday, ahead of
another front expected to cross the region on Thursday.

Monday through Thursday...High pressure builds in from the west
behind the departing strong low pressure system late Monday
into Tuesday, with temps likely remaining below normal with
highs mostly in the 40s to 50s and lows in the upper 20s and
30s. Winds will be gusty on Monday, due to the gradient between
the strong low moving north into New England and high pressure
building in from the Deep South states. A cold front will
approach from the west late Wed and cross the region Thurs into
Thursday night. The front hangs up just off the NC/SC coast,
oriented SW to NE, with potential for shortwave troughs to
impact ENC Friday afternoon which may lead to wintry precip.
Timing of shortwaves aloft and location of moisture axis remain
the determining factors for sensible wx at this time.

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through Sunday/...
As of 1255 PM Sat... No significant changes to forecast
thinking since the previous update. Light northerly winds and
VFR conditions will continue through this afternoon and evening.
Clouds are then forecast to increase and lower overnight as low
pressure approaches from the southwest. Sub VFR conditions are
forecast to overspread the region from southwest to northeast
Sunday morning after 9Z as a wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain,
and snow develops around sunrise especially at inland sites
such as OAJ/ISO/PGV. Elsewhere, rain showers are forecast
Sunday morning. Wintry mix inland is then forecast to transition
to rain by about mid morning on Sunday with rain becoming heavy
at times during the afternoon across all areas. This will bring
a threat for lower visibilities in the heaviest rain as well as
sub MVFR conditions late tomorrow morning and tomorrow
afternoon. In addition to this, winds will become northeast to
easterly and increase to 10-15 knots with gusts in excess of 20
knots by Sunday morning as well.

LONG TERM /Sunday night through Wednesday/...
As of 430 AM Sat...Sub-VFR conditions likely Sunday night as a
strong low pressure system impacts the region. Rain may be
moderate to heavy at times into early Sunday night. Could see
crosswind component in gusty winds late Sunday into Monday. VFR
conditions return Monday and persist Tue and Wed as high
pressure builds in from the west.

.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /through Tonight/...
As of 645 AM Sat...Dangerous marine conditions are forecast to
continue becoming even worse late tonight and peaking on Sunday
night as a developing low pressure system crosses the region.
Storm Warnings have been issued for the Pamlico Sound and the
coastal waters, with Gale Warnings in effect for the remainder
of the waters. Today will see briefly improving conditions as N
winds 15-25 kt this morning diminish to 10-15 kt this afternoon
into this evening. Winds will become NE and increase to 20-25 kt
after midnight as the low approaches from the southwest. Seas
will remain elevated well in excess of 6 ft north of Ocracoke
through tonight while south 3-5 ft seas continue through this
evening then build 4-7 ft late tonight.

LONG TERM /Sunday through Wednesday/...
As of 415 AM Sat...Veering winds from NE to SE are expected to
increase substantially Sunday as a low pressure system
approaches from the southwest and deepens over the area with
Storm to Gale Force conditions expected across all of the waters
Sunday into Monday. Seas build in excess of of 10 ft Sunday in
response to increasing winds, peaking at 20 ft late Sunday
night. Once Gales diminish Monday afternoon, seas are expected
to remain at SCA levels through midday Tuesday. High pressure
builds over the area Tuesday into Wednesday, resulting in winds
and seas dropping below SCA levels Tues night.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 645 AM Sat...Coastal Flood Watches and Warnings have been
issued for the Outer and Inner Banks areas. Strong low pressure
system will impact the area Sunday into Monday, with potential
for minor to locally moderate coastal flooding. It continues to
look like water level rises of 1-3 ft above ground level (AGL)
will be likely for areas adjacent to the coast, the Pamlico
Sound and the Neuse/Bay/Pamlico/Pungo Rivers. Rough surf is also
likely to result in ocean overwash and beach erosion. Rapid
water level rises will be possible for soundside areas adjacent
to the Pamlico Sound as strong SE winds late Sunday becoming WSW
Sunday night and Monday.
