Shore break occurs when waves break directly on the beach. It is

.SYNOPSIS...
Cold front will track across the Coastal Plain tonight
continuing to bring a threat for showers and thunderstorms to
the area. Gusty N'rly winds will persist behind the front
tonight and on Friday. High pressure then builds in Friday and
Saturday. The next cold front will impact the area later Sunday
into Monday, with more settled weather returning early to
possibly middle of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/...
As of 655 PM Thursday...Line of showers and tstorms have formed
along the cold front pushing through the FA as forecasted.
Latest obs reporting some gusty showers and storms, though winds
have remained just under SVR criteria. Mesoanalysis still shows
around 1000-2000 J/kg of CAPE with 30-35 kts of 0-6km shear
across the southern coast, so storms are expected to persist,
and perhaps strengthen slightly, over the next few hours as the
front reaches the coastline.

Cold front and associated precip will quickly push offshore
this evening with strong CAA developing after midnight bringing
gusty nly winds which will usher in a much cooler and drier
airmass into the region with dewpoints dropping into the mid 40s
across inland areas. Lows will drop into the mid 50s inland to
around 60 coast by daybreak Friday.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
As of 415 PM Thursday... Strong CAA continues through much of
Friday as high pressure nudges into ENC from the west. Gusty
N'rly winds will continue to persist through much of the day
Friday before easing early Friday night as the pressure
gradient remains tight between the incoming high pressure and
distant hurricane Fiona. Widespread gusts up around 20-25 mph
will be possible through the day/ Outside of the winds however,
the area will remain relatively dry as a more stable airmass
overspreads the region. With this strong CAA in place high are
only forecast to reach the upper 60s to low 70s across the CWA
even with ample sunshine.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 415 PM Thu...Unseasonably cool weather Friday night gives
way to more normal temps and mainly dry weather Saturday into
Sunday. A quickly moving cold front will cross the area late
Sunday into Monday, with considerable forecast uncertainty for
the middle of next week.

Friday night and Saturday... Unseasonably strong CAA continues into
Friday evening as high pressure settles into the area. Though winds
will be on the downtrend as Hurricane Fiona moves further away and
the pressure gradient relaxes, it will still be rather cool for this
time of year. Dry conditions prevail, with lows Friday night near
record low mins...into the 40s for most away from the beaches.

This gradient weakens quickly Saturday as the high center moves
overhead, shutting off the CAA and allowing temps to moderate some,
though still remaining several degrees below normal with continued
dry conditions.

Sunday through Thursday: Broad upper troughing develops over the
eastern US early to mid next week. At the surface, high pressure
slides offshore Sunday as we get into more of a WAA pattern ahead of
an approaching cold front that will cross quickly Sunday night. How
much moisture can advect in ahead of the front later Sunday is the
greatest limiting factor WRT precip coverage, and have maintained
mainly high end chance POPs with the passage of the front early
Monday morning.

Post-frontal CAA will be relatively weak as high pressure builds in
from the S and W behind the front Monday. The pattern becomes less
certain Tuesday through mid-week as very strong high pressure
centered over the Great Lakes and Midwest could continue to build
into the area, or could weaken locally as stronger inverted coastal
troughing develops. Additionally, the potential for strong, likely
tropical low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico will require continued
monitoring mid to late next week.

.AVIATION /00Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through Friday/...
As of 705 PM Thursday...Line of showers and storms currently
pushing through the FA this evening, bringing moments of sub-
VFR conditions to terminals, is expected to reach the coast
within the next few hours. Far inland terminals (PGV/ISO) are
now behind the front, soon to be followed by EWN/OAJ with the
airspace across the Crystal Coast and SOBX being the last to see
the cold front push through this evening. Behind the front, VFR
conditions expected, but strong Nrly winds will gust 20-25 kts
with some 30-35 kt gusts across the OBX, persisting through
Friday morning. Winds begin to ease Friday aftn, diminishing to
gusts around 15 kts before easing to 10 kts in the early
evening. VFR conditions will persist through Friday.

LONG TERM /Friday night through Tuesday/...
As of 345 AM Thu...VFR prevails with gusty northerly winds
Friday. Drier air keeps VFR conditions in place Saturday, with
increasing moisture and the potential for brief flight
restrictions in showers and storms as a cold front crosses the
area Sunday night into Monday. VFR returns thereafter.

SHORT TERM /through Tonight/...
As of 415 PM Friday... Conditions will continue to quickly
deteriorate this evening as a combination of large swells
associated with distant Hurricane Fiona and strong winds
associated with a cold front push across the waters this
evening. Widespread 5-8 ft seas with a 12-14 sec period are
already impacting the coastal waters and sea heights are
forecast to only increase this evening closer to 9-14 ft. 10-15
kt SW'rly winds will increase to around 15-25 kt over the next
few hours then become NW to N as strong CAA develops behind the
front late this evening and after midnight bringing Gale Force
conditions across much of the waters, especially in gusts. These
gale force wind gusts will continue into Friday morning before
slowly beginning to decrease throughout the day Friday.
Northern most sounds and rivers will be the first to drop below
gale force gusts followed by the remainder of the inland sounds
and southern waters with central waters falling below gale
criteria last on Friday. However, continued SCA conditions will
still be possible after gale force conditions end as winds will
continue to gust in excess of 25 kts and seas along our coastal
waters will remain above 6 ft in the wake of strong CAA.

LONG TERM /Friday through Tuesday/...
As of 345 AM Thu...Large, long period swell from distant
Hurricane Fiona continues Friday, slowly subsiding later in the
day into Saturday. Northerly gales in the morning will slowly
diminish through the day, but the addition of the northerly
wind swell will bring very dangerous marine conditions through
the day Friday. Conditions improve Friday night into Saturday as
high pressure moves overhead. Sunday brings increasing SW winds
ahead of an approaching cold front, with SCA conditions
possible later in the day into Sunday night. The front will
cross the waters Monday morning, with mainly light to moderate
winds expected to begin next week.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 415 PM Thu...Powerful long period SE'rly swell from
distant hurricane Fiona will continue to build this evening, and
is expected to peak late tonight through Friday morning. Seas
heights peaking around 9-14 feet with a dominate period of 14-16
seconds will bring surf heights as high as 10-15 ft, and High
Surf Advisories are in effect for all area beaches into
tomorrow. Life threatening rip currents will also occur at all
beaches.

This large swell will also bring a threat for coastal erosion, ocean
overwash, and minor inundation of oceanfront properties and roads
along the Outer Banks from Cape Lookout to Hatteras Island later
today through tomorrow. This includes all ocean side beaches along
the Core Banks, Ocracoke, Rodanthe.
