Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC
735 PM EDT Wed Sep 7 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
A reinforcing front will continue to push offshore tonight with
high pressure attempting to build into the region tomorrow.
Drier conditions are expected to kick off the weekend, but
unsettled weather returns early next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/...
As of 730 PM Wed...Surface boundary continues to trudge offshore
this evening per radar imagery and surface observations, but a
few brief showers and possibly a thunderstorm or two remain
possible over the coastal plain with boundary interactions
through the next couple of hours. Instability is already quickly
diminishing and by early tomorrow morning any thunderstorm risk
will be confined over warmer near-shore areas.
Once this boundary moves south of the FA much quieter conditions
are forecast this evening with just some coastal showers
lingering into the early morning hours on Thursday. A low
stratus deck is then forecast to develop behind this boundary as
northeasterly winds continue to pump ample moisture into the
boundary layer overnight. This should at least keep the fog
threat minimal at best but will likely keep much of ENC under
mostly cloudy skies this evening. Lows tonight get into the
upper 60s to low 70s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
As of 330 PM Wednesday...As high pressure builds down to the
East Coast from the north Thursday, drier air will begin to move
into the area, however a meandering weak area of low pressure
offshore will remain close enough to allow for scattered shower
development to continue, especially across the coast and this is
where the highest PoP's for tomorrow are noted. Though we will
continue to see a threat for showers, thinking the overall
thunder threat will remain minimal at best as widespread CAA
will bring a more stable airmass in place thus limiting the
thunder threat. Highs on Thursday will also be slightly lower
than Wednesday given the expected CAA across the FA with highs
peaking in the mid 80s across the entire CWA.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 4 PM Wed...Drier conditions will slowly build in Thursday
night into Friday as high pressure noses in from the north,
while a weak area of low pressure sits just offshore. By Friday
and through most of the weekend, the high will become centered
closer to the area, with mostly dry conditions persisting. The
next slow moving storm system will move into the area by early
next week, bringing with it the potential for more unsettled
weather.
Friday... By Friday, this low will move farther away, and allow
for mostly dry conditions, though a few isolated showers across
the OBX will still be possible. Strengthening northerly flow
between the low and high pressure will moderate high temps, with
readings expected to be in the low to mid 80s both days.
Saturday through Tuesday...Dry high pressure builds farther
south over the area this weekend, however to our south moisture
advection will increase ahead of a slow moving upper level
trough and cut off low. Initially, dry air should hold off
precip development across most of the area Saturday, though some
scattered showers will be possible across the SW coastal plain.
Then as high pressure moves offshore Sunday, precipitation will
attempt to build eastward, but will need to erode a significant
layer of dry air first. This leads to uncertainty with the
eastward extent of showers Sunday, and will keep PoPs
conservative across the eastern half of the forecast area.
By Monday deep moisture advection will win out across the
forecast area, and better chances for showers and thunderstorms
are expected as the cut off low and upper level trough move
closer. Unsettled conditions will likely linger through Tuesday.
Temperatures through this period will remain right around
average with highs in the low to mid 80s, with lows in the 60s
to low 70s.
&&
.AVIATION /00Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through Thursday morning/...
As of 735 PM Wed...Apart from EWN and OBX terminals, VFR
conditions prevail across the region tonight with a band of
stratiform rain and embedded tstorms straddling a boundary from
OAJ to HSE. A few isolated showers and thunderstorms are
attempting to develop along a remnant outflow boundary north of
EWN and may bring brief impacts here early in the period, but
with waning instability do not expect this activity to last much
beyond 01-02z.
Bigger concern tonight is lowering cigs behind the surface
boundary. Guidance continues to aggressively suggest widespread
MVFR conditions shortly after midnight at a minimum, but IFR
looks probable for OAJ as well as inner coastal plain terminals
after 07-08z. Some pockets of fog are possible as well but with
light but steady northerly winds, as well as antecedent thick
cirrus, odds of more widespread visibility issues appear thin.
Cigs begin to scatter out by 13-14z Thur morning with prevailing
VFR conditions expected to return for the remainder of the
period as high pressure weakly builds in from the northwest.
LONG TERM /Thursday night through Sunday/... As of 340 AM
Wed...Mostly VFR conditions are expected through the period as
drier high pressure builds into the area.
&&
.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /Through Wednesday/...
As of 345 PM Wednesday... The beginning of a long duration
unsettled period for our coastal waters begins this evening.
Weak surface low remains offshore this afternoon but latest
observations show its associated surface boundary beginning to
drag S towards our northern waters. Forecast guidance suggests
this boundary will continue S with a surge of northerly winds
filtering in behind it. 5-10 knots winds will quickly increase
to 10-20 knots across all coastal waters and sounds this evening
and on Thursday with widespread wind gusts in excess of 25
knots. Seas across the coastal waters have already reached 3-5
feet and are forecast to increase further on Thursday to 5-8
feet given the stronger northerly winds. With the addition of
25 knot wind gusts across our northern sounds and Alligator
River have included these waters in a small craft advisory as
well starting this evening and persisting into Thursday night.
Didn't change the other small crafts as timing and conditions
have changed little. Another afternoon and evening of showers
and tstorms expected.
LONG TERM /Thursday through Sunday/...
As of 340 AM Wed...Deteriorating boating conditions are
expected through the long term, with small craft conditions
continuing through at least this weekend thanks to a combination
of strong winds and building swell from distant Hurricane Earl.
As the pressure gradient pinches Thursday winds will increase
through the day to 20-25 kts out of the north, with gusts
approaching 30 kts. Strong winds continue Thursday night and
only subside slightly Friday to NNE 15-20 kts. Winds on
Saturday will become ENE at 10-15 kts, and then shift slightly
to the east at around 10 kts on Sunday.
Rapidly increasing waves are expected Thursday with seas
becoming 5-8 ft north of Cape Lookout by late afternoon
(remaining 4-6 ft to the south). As swell from Hurricane Earl
increases, seas will build even further Friday to 6-10 ft north
of Cape Lookout, and remain at this level for most of the
weekend. Across the southern waters seas will remain mostly 4-6
ft as most of the swell energy is deflected by Cape Lookout and
the its shoals.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 355 PM Wed...Long period swell from very distant
Hurricane Earl will continue to build across the waters, peaking
this weekend and early next week. This will lead to a few
coastal threats.
High rip current risk along the beaches Thursday. The elevated
rip current threat will likely continue into early next week.
Strong shorebreak will also be a threat the next few days,
mainly north of Cape Lookout.
Persistent moderate to gusty onshore winds, high astronomical
tides, and wave run up may lead to minor oceanside coastal
flooding during times of high tide Thursday evening through the
weekend. Areas more likely to be impacted will be north of Cape
Hatteras. In addition, could see locally minor ocean overwash
for locations north of Cape Hatteras where dune structure is
vulnerable.
