.UPDATE...Showers across Coos and Douglas counties this morning
will spread to the rest of the area throughout the day, with snow
levels lowering to around 2000 feet by this evening. With
widespread winter weather expected to continue through Tuesday
morning, Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for much of
the region, with details found at PDXWSWMFR. A few minor changes
were made this morning to bring conditions in line with the
most recent observations, but no major updates were necessary.

.AVIATION...20/18Z TAFs...MVFR/IFR conditions are present along the
coastal waters and immediate coastline, including KOTH. As a front
pushes south and east, MVFR ceilings will become more common across
the region; spreading from the Umpqua Basin this morning to the
Rogue Valley by tonight. VFR conditions should prevail through this
afternoon for locations from KMFR south and east, before
deteriorating later this evening.

Mountain obscuration will also expand ahead of the front from
increasing mid-and-low level cloud cover. Ahead of and along the
front, westerly winds will increase and become especially gusty east
of the Cascades this afternoon and evening. Given the strength of
the front, we expect winds to gust to 20 mph at least in the Rogue
Valley this afternoon, thought these gusts will likely only last for
a brief time.

Under heavier showers, short periods of IFR conditions may occur.
The snow level will fall to 2500 feet this afternoon, then to
between 1000-1500 feet tonight. Overnight, snow down to the Rogue
Valley floor, impacting KMFR, can't be ruled out; as well as up to a
15% chance for some lightning in the vicinity of KOTH & KRBG.

.MARINE...Updated 800 AM PST Sunday 20 February 2022...A Small
Craft Advisory will expand to all of the waters this morning (except
for very steep seas in the outer waters north of Coos Bay beyond
about 10 nm). This will be due to a combination of northerly wind
driven waves that will combine with a building short period NW swell
(more details below). The Hazardous Seas Warning for the outer
waters and Small Craft Advisory for the inner waters have been
extended and now are in effect late Sunday afternoon through Monday
night.

A slow moving cold front will traverse across the region this
morning, and gusty north to northwest winds will prevail in its wake
through Wednesday. The steep and very steep seas will be a mix
between wind-driven and fresh NW swell, but this is not delineated
specifically within our warning products as both the fresh swell and
wind wave will have similar periods of 7 to 9 seconds. There will
also be a fairly constant longer period (~14 seconds) WNW swell
around 4 to 5 feet in the background.

Some combination of hazardous seas warning and small craft may need
to be extended into mid-week. As upper-level ridge conditions return
later on Wednesday, northerly winds again increase, especially south
of Cape Blanco. While the strong northerly winds are likely to peak
quickly on Wednesday, the northwest swell will be slow to diminish,
keeping seas elevated (especially the southern waters).

DISCUSSION...
An upper level trough is moving southeastward and into the
forecast area early this morning. ODOT road cameras indicate some
snow showers in the Cascades from Diamond Lake to Willamette
Pass. Rain gages across Coos and Douglas counties have indicated
amounts from a trace to a little over a tenth of an inch, thus
far, this morning. Snow level where it is precipitating seems to
be around 4kft. We'll need to keep a close eye on the temperature
and radar this morning because temperatures are at or below
freezing down to many valley floors south of the Umpqua Divide
right now. Should precipitation get going in those areas this
morning, it would likely be a light wintry mix, with patchy
freezing drizzle possible.

Winter headlines were updated overnight to add detail for the
expected snowfall from today through Tuesday. During the day today
snow levels are likely to be generally above 2.5kft with light
snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches expected from Highway 140
northward and lighter amount south of there. Snow levels then fall
to around 1500 foot elevations tonight into Monday morning before
rising some Monday afternoon and evening. A number of Winter
Weather Advisories have been issued and updated for areas from the
Cascades westward. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 10 PM
PST this evening through 10 PM PST Monday for elevations above
1500 feet in Douglas County. Be advised that Highway 138 from
Roseburg to Diamond Lake is likely to get some healthy snow
amounts in the 3 to 9 inch range during the watch time period.

As compared to what it looked like 24 hours ago, model guidance
has shifted the position of the upper level trough moving in
Monday through Tuesday morning a bit further west. Thus, with
colder air and dynamics expected to extend more westward, snowfall
amounts have been adjusted upward some from 24 hours ago. There's
likely to be deep convective showers and even a slight
possibility of thunderstorms Monday morning through Tuesday
morning from the Cascades westward. Snow levels are likely to be
in the 1kft to 2kft range during that time period, but could dip
below 1kft Tuesday morning.

For the Rogue Valley, upslope northwest flow areas such as those
along and near the north side of the Siskiyous, including the
Ashland area, are expected to see some light snowfall this evening
through early Monday. However, the best cold air and dynamics are
Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning. It's notable that the
models are beginning to lag the upper level low over the area
longer Tuesday such that the snow threat may continue into the
afternoon and evening in the Mount Ashland, Ashland, Siskiyou
Summit, and Greensprings areas. We'll need to keep an eye on that
for possible winter weather advisory extension. Currently, it
appears Jackson County could see 1 to 3 inches of snowfall down
to around 1500 foot elevations, 3 to 6 inches above 2kft, and 5-12
inch amounts above 3kft. Please check the point-and-click
forecasts on the internet for further details for your location.

With the more westward track of the upper level low, confidence in
record low temperatures is increasing for both Wednesday and
Thursday mornings. For the west side, lows those two mornings
could be the lowest temperatures experienced since Feb 23rd in
2018! While clouds, fog, or east wind could keep temperatures up
in some areas, guidance has been very consistent in indicating
very cold temperatures on par to even a bit colder than what we're
advertising in the forecast. In fact, the NAM12 and GFS20
indicate an Arctic cold front pushing over the Cascades from the
northeast Wednesday morning. This can be seen in the dewpoint
fields on the NAM12 as dewpoints fall from the 20s to the single
digits and teens across the west side.

The cold temperatures are then expected to linger into at least
Friday morning, but, possibly into the weekend. With the dry air
mass that will have moved in with the cold air, we can expected 20
to 40 degree Fahrenheit diurnal ranges mid-late this week at
inland locations.

Looking out to next weekend into early March, it's looking like
the arrival of the next round of precipitation may be
delayed...again. 8-10 day (Mon, Feb 28th - Wed, Mar 2nd) clusters
indicate a 51%/49% split between wet and dry solutions. The wetter
solutions show a quarter of an inch or more of precipitation west
of about Lakeview and Alturas, with the drier ones suggesting a
tenth of an inch or more north and west of the Umpqua Divide, but
lesser amounts south and east of there. Interestingly, 87% of the
GEFS members are on board with the wetter solution, whereas 55%
of the CMC and 66% of the ECE members are on board with the drier
