.DISCUSSION...The latest satellite image shows low clouds in the
Umpqua Basin, Illinois Valley and it's beginning to develop in the
Rogue valley near Grants Pass. Also low clouds are filling in the
valleys east of the Cascades. The low clouds are expected to persist
for most of the morning hours, then gradually burning off in the
afternoon. Otherwise today will be rather quiet.

There's good agreement the next front will arrive at the coast early
Thursday morning, then move onshore during the day. Moderate to
strong south winds are possible over the exposed areas along the
coast, south of Cape Blanco, but they are not expected to reach high
wind criteria, and should be strongest for about a 6 hour period
late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Moderate winds are also
possible in the south end of the Rogue Valley and Shasta Valley.
Gusty winds are also expected east of the Cascades Thursday
afternoon, strongest over the ridges.

Precipitation will arrive at the coast late tonight, then moving
inland during the day Thursday. The front itself is not strong for
this time of the year, but the main concern will be lower snow
levels (especially around and above 2500 feet) and a winter weather
advisory remains in effect. The best chance for road snow should
generally be above 3000 feet, although road snow could briefly occur
around 2500 feet in heavier precipitation during the day Thursday.
Even then impact from the snow are expected to be minor. The one
exception could be in the Mount Shasta area where snowfall rates
could end up higher due to upslope flow and enhanced
precipitation. For more details on the snow, please see WSWMFR.

The one fly in the ointment regarding snow levels will be the
presence of colder air trapped in the valleys, this could be a
bigger concern in the Illinois Valley. Therefore the window of
opportunity for valley snow could end up higher, especially for Hays
Hill Summit. With that said, the one thing that could limit the snow
concern will be increasing cloud cover ahead of the front tonight
into Thursday morning, which if sufficient could put a cap on the
amount of cooling that occurs.

The Rogue Valley the potential for lower elevations snow much less
for the following reasons: 1) increasing and sufficient cloud cover,
again limiting the amount of cooling, and 2) downsloping which will
effectively keep precipitation at bay until the front actually moves
into the area which is not expected to be until late Thursday
morning. By this time the roads will have a chance to warm up enough
where even if rain were to mix in with snow, it's not going to stick
on the roads.

Meanwhile rainfall amounts will be highest along the coast, and
coastal mountains where 1 to 1.5 inches of rain are possible on
Thursday.

Showers will continue into Thursday night as the upper trough moves
overhead, but most are expected to be light.

Another and stronger front is expected to arrive at the coast Friday
afternoon. Strong winds are possible in exposed areas along the
coast, mainly around and south of Cape Blanco. Guidance shows
pressure gradients between Arcata and North Bend are around 8.0 and
9.2 mb which typically results in high wind along the coast. because
of this, have issued a high wind watch for exposed areas above 1500
feet primarily from Cape Blanco south. Please see NPWMFR for more
details. Also moderate to heavy rain is likely at the coast early
Friday morning. Details on this can be found in the extended

.LONG TERM...Friday through Tuesday...December 9-13, 2022...
Monday...After a short break between systems, another strong front
will move toward the coast Friday. This one looks to be the
strongest of the period as surface low pressure tracks inside 130W
Friday night (probably north of 45N) and then to a position near or
just off the Washington coast (Vancouver Island) by early Saturday.
This one is expected to have stronger winds with solid gales over
the marine waters. Model pressure gradients are not quite as strong
as they were yesterday, but are still probably enough to support
warning-level winds at the coast. Strong, gusty winds are also
likely over some inland areas favored in these types of
situations (Shasta Valley and the East Side, especially along
Highway 31 near Summer Lake). Breezy SE winds will also probably
impact at least the southern portion of the Rogue Valley. Even
though snow levels once again could start off a little lower (down
around 2000 feet Friday morning), precipitation won't really get
going until snow levels rise to around 3000 feet Friday afternoon
night. There may also be some downslope winds west of the Cascades
to further reduce the chance of low-level snow. So, most of the snow
impacts will occur above 3000 feet. Preliminary estimates are
showing about 8-15 inches of snow in the Cascades/Siskiyous with
similar amounts in Siskiyou County and the Mt. Shasta region.
Mountains in Siskiyou County (above 5000 feet) will probably end up
with 1-2 feet of new snow. Some spillover from the Cascades could
bring 5-9 inches along Highway 97 from Chiloquin northward. It's
likely we'll need winter storm watches in those areas. Over the
remainder of the East Side, amounts of 3-6 inches are most likely in
Klamath Falls, Lakeview, and Alturas with 1-3 inches east of highway
31 over eastern Lake County. With some wind expected to blow the
snow around, we'll probably need advisories there.

The front will push east of the area Saturday afternoon, but the
closed low position very near or just off Vancouver Island will
maintain onshore flow and plenty of post-frontal showers. The air
mass will continue to get colder Saturday night into Sunday morning
and snow levels will once again lower to 1500-2000 feet west of the
Cascades. While amounts down that low will probably be an
inch or less, several additional inches of snow will fall in the
mountains. The upper low will wobble southeastward over the area
Sunday and eventually into the Great Basin early next week. We'll
maintain a high probability (50-70%) of showers over the area Sunday
with only a minor bump in snow levels to 2000-2500 feet. Shower
chances gradually diminish Sunday night into Monday as the low
departs.

After a deep trough departs, we'd normally expect there to be a
break with upper ridging on the back side. This appears to be
what is most likely to occur later Monday into Tuesday of next week.
NBM PoPs continue to show fairly high probabilities of precipitation
since some models keep the wavelengths between systems shorter and
already have the next front approaching the coast by Tuesday.
We won't deviate much from this, but it is expected that NBM PoPs
would lower some in this time period. -Spilde

.AVIATION...07/12Z TAFs...Areas of IFR/LIFR cigs in low clouds and
fog over the inland valleys will occur through this morning,
clearing to VFR by this afternoon. Additionally, local  IFR
cigs/vis in fog are possible along the coast tonight and
Wednesday morning and areas of MVFR cigs are expected to develop
along the coast and over the coastal waters on Wednesday in low
clouds and rain. An incoming front will bring gusty winds and rain
to the coast late today and tonight with MVFR cigs. The lower
conditions will spread inland to the Cascades tonight
with higher terrain becoming obscured.

.MARINE...Updated 200 AM PST Wednesday 7 December 2022...Relatively
calm conditions will continue through this morning.  Winds will
begin to increase out of the south late this afternoon.

A strong front will bring gale force south winds and steep to very
steep seas to the waters this evening into Thursday morning.
Moderate northwest swell will build Thursday afternoon into Friday
morning, bringing more steep seas to the area.

Another strong front will move onshore Friday night, with strong
gales and steep to very steep seas possible. Some models are
indicating storm force gusts Friday night, but will keep as a Gale
watch for now until further guidance comes in. Weak low pressure
will remain over the waters Sunday.
