the Coquille valley, and in the coastal waters, the skies are
clear over southern Oregon and far northern California. Today is
expected to be another hot one, along with tomorrow, before a
slight cooldown through the rest of the week. With dry, warm, and
breezy conditions dominating, fire weather concerns continue, and

most of the TAF period. The marine stratus push has made it to the
coast from Port Orford to Reedsport. Models are insistent that the

lower conditions will prevail into this morning, then burning off
between 18-20z at North Bend. VFR is expected through the mid to
late afternoon before lower conditions return in the evening.

Elsewhere, VFR conditions will prevail through the TAF period.

trough near the coast will weaken today with gusty winds and steep
seas gradually subsiding this evening. The thermal trough will
strengthen again Thursday night into Friday, and strong north winds
and steep seas will return to the area, mostly south of Cape
Blanco.

SYNOPSIS...
Conditions a little hotter, drier, and breezier than is typical
are expected through the forecast period as the Four Corners High
expands westward and dominates our weather. Meanwhile, weak low
pressure will linger well offshore, and will come into play for
the latter half of the week when it moves through. This low is
likely to push a dry cold front through late Thursday into Friday
bringing a period of breezy to windy conditions. General low
pressure is then likely to linger aloft across the Pacific
Northwest through the weekend.

DISCUSSION...
A dry air mass lies across the forecast area this morning. Low
pressure across the south-central California last evening is
drifting across the Sierras and into the Great Basin this morning
taking any threat for thunderstorms with it. Further west, out
over the Pacific near 135 West longitude, a couple areas of low
pressure are spinning, bringing very dry, subtropical air
northward over the forecast area.

With the dry air mass over the forecast area remaining in place,
high temperatures are expected to be a few degrees warmer today
than they were yesterday. Wednesday is expected to be about the
same to a little warmer than Tuesday. On both days, expect breezy
to windy conditions in the afternoon and evening hours, most
notably across much of Northern California.

Thursday through Friday the low pressure trough well west of our
coast in the Pacific is likely to push inland across the PacNW.
The initial cold air aloft is likely to be directed north of our
area, which should keep any thunderstorm threat north of us. There
is a secondary low pressure impulse coming through Friday that
bears some watching. All in all, after Wednesday's temperature
peak, we're expecting a bit of a cool down Thursday and into
Friday. Numerical model guidance is suggesting that Thursday
afternoon into early Friday will bring the highest winds of the
week.

Another warm-up, possibly a heat wave, is likely to begin on our
about Tuesday of next week. ~BTL

FIRE WEATHER...200 PM PDT Monday 18 July 2022...A third day of red
flag conditions are expected with a Red Flag Warning in place this
afternoon and evening for FWZ 285 across the Modoc Plateau.
Temperatures will climb during the start of this week with triple
digits possible in West Side valleys, and periods of light east
winds overnight may lead to limited humidity recoveries along the
coast range.

There is also likely to be a fourth day of critical conditions, as
models continue to maintain increased wind fields for Tuesday in the
latest runs. With RHs generally expected to be 10% or less, wind
gusts only need to reach 20 mph. For most places in eastern Siskiyou
County east across the Modoc Plateau the chance of reach gusts of 20
mph is 85% or higher. Hi-res ensemble guidance from the HREF
suggests the combination of winds & RH has a 60% chance of
occurring. While similar, the latest runs today have only increased
confidence, so the Fire Weather Watch has been upgraded to yet
another Red Flag Warning.

Also worth watching out for on Tuesday is the need to increase the
area covered by the Fire Weather Watch. Areas in southeast Modoc
near the Rush Creek and Juniper Creek RAWS are also indicating at
least brief, isolated critical conditions, especially along the
higher terrain. The latest run of the HREF gives critical conditions
a 20-30% chance and this seems like a fair evaluation of the
potential risk considering humidities are more likely to be in the
11 to 13% range and thus needing stronger winds to meet critical
criteria.

Some of the more reliable guidance is also suggesting a fifth &
sixth day of of critical or near-critical conditions at least over
the Modoc, with chances increasing of spreading those conditions
into FWZs 284 and 624. For example the SREF ensemble has a 30%
chance of sustained winds greater than 15 mph and RH less than 15%
over the Modoc Wednesday afternoon, which may be on the low side
considering this is three days out. Will have to monitor subsequent
model runs and see if this trend continues.

The thunderstorm risk remains below 10% through next week because
the moist monsoonal flow around the "four corners" high pressure
will remain shunted well to the southeast of our region, which is
good considering our peak lightning season is from mid-July to mid-
