.DISCUSSION...Latest satellite and radar is showing a well-
defined frontal system moving onshore currently. Observations
along the coast in the last hour or so have shown some light to
moderate rainfall (even briefly heavy at North Bend).
Precipitation is pushing into Douglas and Josephine counties as
well over to the Cascades north of Crater Lake. Some downsloping
here in the Rogue Valley will mostly prevent precip until later
this morning or early this afternoon. This will scour out the
colder air that we're currently observing here in Medford due to
residual low cloud cover that trapped the cold air beneath a steep
low-level inversion. We have winter weather advisories up for a
good chunk of the area through this evening as the front pushes
inland and across the Cascades and these look good. It appears the
timing of heaviest snow along the main passes on I-5 (Siskiyou
Summit) and also over the Cascade passes will be 2-6 pm. In the
Mt. Shasta region (where we have a winter storm warning), best
snowfall rates will likely be from 2-8 pm. It is during these time
periods that snowfall rates could reach an inch per hour and
visibility could be occasionally reduced to below 1/2 of a mile.
This is likely to coincide with the afternoon/evening rush,
causing hazardous travel conditions/disruptions. We are expecting
3-6" of snow on Siskiyou Summit and the Cascade passes with up to
10" around Crater Lake. Where snow will be steadier/heavier a bit
longer in the Mt. Shasta region, 6-12" of snow are likely, perhaps
a bit higher around Snowman Summit. Snow levels generally
2500-3000 feet today drop to around 2000 feet behind the front, so
there is some potential for road accumulation down to that level.
As a result, we have winter weather advisories west of the
Cascades for elevations above 2000 feet. So, if traveling north of
Grants Pass, while we're expecting mostly wet roads, watch for
some snow on the passes (Sexton/Smith/Stage/Canyon Ck). Over the
East Side, we also have some winter weather advisories out, but
precipitation amounts are not expected to be as high. In general,
2-4" of snow will be most common, though favored areas (Highway 97
north of Chiloquin and higher passes on Highway 140) could have
up to 6 inches. Gusty winds over there could lead to some blowing
and drifting snow. Speaking of winds, we are expecting advisory
level winds (>=45 mph)today in the Shasta Valley.
For today, the plan is to focus on a stronger front expected to
move in Friday. We already have a slew of watches up for this
event. We are in the process of converting some of the high wind
watches over the East Side to winter storm watches since there
will be both a wind and snow component to the hazard Friday night
into Saturday morning. The main impact over there will be the
wind, but any snow will causing blowing/drifting snow, which
could cause significant visibility reductions/possible whiteouts.
This is expected to come out later this morning. Other winter
storm watches are also expected to be added (Cascades) and we'll
look into expanding wind/winter weather advisories. For the
specifics regarding Friday's system, more information follows

.AVIATION...08/18Z TAFs...Widespread MVFR with local IFR and
terrain obscurations will continue this afternoon as a front
moves through the area. Brief low-level wind shear is still
possible in the Rogue Valley for a little while longer. Some LIFR
vis/ceilings in snow will develop near the Cascades/Siskiyous and in
the Mt. Shasta region. This will continue until around 02-04z this
evening. These lower conditions will spread to the East Side this
evening, affecting Klamath Falls. We are expecting an inch or more
of snow to accumulate on the runway there this evening (00-06Z), so
we have issued an airport weather warning for that. Gusty south
winds are also expected east of the Cascades through this evening.
This first front will shift to the east this evening and some
showers will continue, mainly west of the Cascades overnight into
Friday morning. Expect a mix of MVFR/IFR ceilings with some LIFR

.MARINE...Updated 830 AM PST Thursday 8 December 2022...A cold
front is currently between Buoy 46015 and 46027. Strongest south
winds near shore will shift south of the waters by around noon
with a shift to west during the afternoon. Moderate northwest
swell will build this afternoon into Friday morning, bringing more
steep seas to the area. Another very strong front will move in
Friday, with storm force winds likely along with very steep seas
into Friday night. Winds will diminish Saturday, but heavy
northwest swell will move through Saturday night into Sunday,
which may eventually require a Hazardous Seas Warning. -Spilde

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 400 AM PST Thu Dec 8 2022/
DISCUSSION...The high resolution short range guidance is in pretty
good agreement with the timing of the front this morning. The front
will arrive at the coast early this morning, then move onshore
during the day. Moderate to strong south winds are possible over the
exposed areas along the coast, south of Cape Blanco, but they are
not expected to reach high wind criteria. Moderate winds are also
expected in the Shasta Valley, strongest near Weed. There is also
some evidence gusty southwest winds could develop in the south end
of the Rogue Valley from about Talent south to Ashland late this
morning through this afternoon. Even breezy winds are possible in
Medford proper. Gusty winds are also expected east of the Cascades
Thursday afternoon, strongest over the ridges.
Precipitation will arrive at the coast early this morning, then
moving inland during the day Thursday. The main concern will be
lower snow levels (especially around and above 2500 feet) and a
winter weather advisory remains in effect. However there is good
agreement among the high resolution guidance that precipitation will
start to impact the inland areas late this morning and around noon
or early afternoon east of the Cascades and Siskiyou County.
Therefore the start time of the winter weather advisories have been
delayed until 10 am pst. Please see WSWMFR for more details. The
best chance for road snow should generally be above 2500 feet,
although road snow could briefly occur around 2000 feet in heavier
precipitation during the day. Even then impact from the snow are
expected to be minor. The one exception could be in the Mount Shasta
area where snowfall rates could end up higher due to upslope flow
and enhanced precipitation.
The Rogue Valley the potential for lower elevations snow much less
for the following reason: Downsloping which will effectively keep
precipitation at bay until the front actually moves into the area
which is not expected to be until this afternoon. By this time the
roads will have a chance to warm up enough where even if rain were
to mix in with snow, it's not going to stick on the roads.
Meanwhile rainfall amounts will be highest along the coast, and
coastal mountains where 1 to 1.5 inches of rain are possible from
this morning into early Friday morning. Meanwhile precipitation
amounts around the Mount Shasta area and Cascades could upwards to
an inch during the same time period.
Showers will continue into Thursday night as the upper trough moves
overhead, and most are expected to be light to occasionally moderate.
Impacts with respect to wind and snow are expected to be low.
A stronger front is expected to arrive at the coast Friday
afternoon. However prior to the arrival of the front, strong winds
are still possible over the exposed areas along the coast, mainly
around and south of Cape Blanco. Guidance shows pressure gradients
between Arcata and North Bend are around 9.5 mb which typically
results in high wind along the coast. A high wind watch remains in
effect for exposed areas above 1500 feet primarily from Cape Blanco
south, and its's likely this will be upgraded to a warning this
afternoon. It's also worth noting strong winds are are also possible
east of the Cascades with 700mb winds between 60-70 kts moving over
the Cascades Friday night, and peaking out between 75-80 kts
Saturday morning. The high wind watch east of the Cascades has been
expanded to include a larger area. Please see NPWMFR for more
details. Meanwhile we could experience gusty southeast winds in the
Rogue Valley, especially from about Phoenix south to Ashland,
although Medford could also experience gusty southeast winds late
Friday morning into Friday evening.
The heaviest precipitation is expected to arrive late Friday
afternoon along the coast and Friday night inland. Because were
expecting gusty winds in the Rogue and Shasta Valleys Friday, these
areas will experience downsloping which could result in dry weather
Friday afternoon, with precipitation amounts limited Friday evening
as the front gets closer to these areas. It will be a different
story for the coast, coastal mountains, Cascades and Siskiyou
County. 30 hour Storm total precipitation is expected to be between
3.50 and 4 inches for the coastal mountains in southwest Oregon, and
south coast, 1 to 1.5 inches for the north coast, 1 to 1.50 inches
along the Cascades and 2.50 to 3.50 inches from western through
southern Siskiyou County.
Snow will also be a concern, especially from the southern Cascades
into Siskiyou county and northwest Modoc County. These areas could
get moderate to heavy snow from Friday evening through at least
Saturday morning and there's a good chance for snow fall rates to
exceed an inch per hour at times. Note: The Mount Shasta area (which
includes I-5 south of Weed to Dunsmuir) are at highest risk of
experiencing heavy snow with snowfall rates between 1-2" an hour
Friday night. Highways 89 and highway 97 are also at risk for
moderate to heavy snow with snowfall rates pushing an inch an hour
Friday night. A winter storm watch remains in effect for these
areas.
Keep in mind snow concerns may not be limited to the areas noted
above. The higher terrain in eastern Douglas, Jackson, Josephine
County, and portions of the eastside may also need advisories for
snowfall. Snow amounts east of the Cascades are not expected to be
significant, but the combination of snow and strong winds could lead
to blowing snow which could result in brief whiteout conditions. Any
additional advisories will likely not be issued until after the
current ones end tonight. -Petrucelli
LONG TERM...We'll start the weekend with a strong front moving
through the area Friday night into Saturday. This front looks a
lot more dynamic than it did yesterday, which means it will carry
with it stronger winds. South winds will already be ramping up
along the coast Friday afternoon, and the high wind watch issued
by the night shift looks good (21z Fri-12z Sat), though we have
increased speeds/gusts a bit in the product. Model pressure
gradients are showing OTH-ACV peaking in the -9 to -10 mb range at
03z Saturday, which is a strong indicator for 60+ mph winds along
the coast. Quick look at the NBM 4.1 50th percentile for max wind
gusts during this time period shows widespread wind gusts along
the coast of 45-60 mph with gusts at the headlands possibly
reaching 75 mph. Farther inland, MFR-RDD pressure gradients are
also in the -8 to -10 mb range with strong 700mb winds peaking at
55-65 kt beginning late Friday afternoon and continuing into early
Saturday morning. This is also a strong indicator for high winds
in excess of 60 mph in the Shasta Valley, so we've issued a high
wind watch for areas from Weed northward to Montague. NBM 4.1
supports this as well. We think 850mb winds will be more/less
aligned with the Rogue Valley (southerly), so advisory level SE
winds are a good bet from Medford south to Ashland with gusts in
the 35-45 mph range. We've held off on a product though since it's
still almost 48 hours away. Over the East Side, the strong 700 mb
flow will also lead to potential high winds (60+ mph) for the
usual areas from Silver Lake south to the Warners, primarily
impacting highways 31, 140 and 395. A new high wind watch has also
been issued there. Elsewhere across the East Side, additional
areas will likely be affected by 45 mph wind gusts, with some snow
expected. As a result, we'll probably wrap these into winter
weather advisories for snow/blowing snow. The strongest winds
aloft associated with the front will push south and east of the
area Saturday afternoon, so expect less wind then.
A closed low will be positioned very near or just off Vancouver
Island Saturday afternoon, which will maintain onshore flow and
plenty of post-frontal showers. Snow levels gradually lower as the
air mass turns colder Saturday night into Sunday morning and snow
levels will once again lower to around 2000 feet west of the
Cascades. We aren't expecting much, if any snow accumulation that
low over the west side, but there can still be a few to several
inches of snow over the mountains. The upper low will wobble
southeastward over the area Sunday and eventually into the Great
Basin early next week. We'll maintain a high probability (50-70%) of
showers over the area Sunday with only a minor bump in snow levels
to around 2500 feet. Shower chances gradually diminish Sunday night
into Monday as the low departs to the east.
There is decent model consensus that upper ridging will
develop, at least briefly, Tuesday into Wednesday, which would
translate to a continuation of colder than normal weather with
fairly low/minimal chances for precipitation. If there's enough
clearing, it could be very cold again east of the Cascades, where
fresh snowfall would lead to lows commonly in the single digits,
and even below zero in some typically colder areas (Christmas
Valley). -Spilde
AVIATION...08/12Z TAFs...Areas of IFR/LIFR cigs in low clouds and
fog over the Rogue Valley and over the Klamath Basin are stubborn
and look like they will persist at least through early morning. At
the coast, an incoming front will bring gusty winds and MVFR cigs in
rain this morning, followed by lighter winds but continued MFR cigs
through through this evening. Ahead of the front, low level wind
shear is expected at the coast tonight into early Thursday morning
due to a strong low level jet moving onshore.
With this front, as precipitation spreads inland this morning and
afternoon, expect mainly MVFR cigs/vis to develop across the area
with local IFR cigs/vis and widespread mountain obscurations. Areas
of low level wind shear may also affect inland areas west of the
Southern Oregon Cascades on Thursday morning, including at KMFR. On
the back side of the front, late afternoon into this evening,
conditions are expected to lower to a mix of IFR/MFR cigs/vis and
areas of LIFR conditions.

front will bring gale force south winds and steep to very steep seas
to the waters this morning. Winds will ease from north to south
across the water this morning. Moderate northwest swell will build
this afternoon into Friday morning, bringing more steep seas to the
area. Another strong front will move onshore Friday night, with
storm force winds likely along with very steep seas. Winds will
diminish Saturday, but heavy northwest swell will move through
Saturday night into Sunday, which may eventually require a Hazardous
Seas Warning.
