As of 3:30 AM CST temperatures across the Mid-South are in the
40s. Looking at radar there are some light returns, however much
of this isn't hitting the ground. What has made it to the surface
has been very light. This will become more steady as we move into
this afternoon and evening. Locally heavy rainfall is possible
across northeast Mississippi where WPC has introduced a Marginal
Risk highlighting 1 to 2 inches of rain is. This could cause
ponding of water in low spots, some localized flooding and a bump
in river levels. As we always say, Turn Around, Don't Drown!
Now for later this evening into Sunday. The phasing of the low
pressure and the trough from Canada will continue to dive
southward across the Central Plains. It is expected to deepen as
it moves across southern Arkansas and central Mississippi.
Rainfall that has fallen today will begin to transition to snow
from north to south. As such we have a Winter Storm Watch for NE
Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel starting at 18Z. Heavy wet
snow coupled with elevated and gusty winds is going to cause
travel difficulties with roads impassable and potential for tree
limbs and power lines to go down. The transition will shift
southward into the Memphis metro and points south around midnight.
Now the tricky part is forecasting where convective bands of snow
set up.
At current the I-40 Corridor looks to be where the heaviest snow
could fall. Where this banding sets up means that locations under
it could see 1 inch plus per hour snowfall rates with blowing and
drifting snow. As such a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for most
of the area, minus Yalobusha, Calhoun, Chickasaw, and Monroe
counties in Mississippi. We are expecting parts of the area to be
upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning and others to a Winter Weather
Advisory. It cannot be stressed enough that some areas, most
notably those under convective bands, could see 3-6 inches of snow
with locally higher amounts. Most snow in the 5-7 inch range is
possible closer to the Tennessee River Valley. Area outside of
convective banding could see snow but below Warning criteria.
Everyone will likely get snow but there will be others that get a
significant amount. The uncertainty lies where this bands sets up.
This is an evolving situation so please stay tuned for updates
here and on our social media channels.
Given the snowfall on Sunday and it slowly tapering off I don't
think temperatures are going to warm above freezing so have
trended lower than guidance given the snow fall and snow cover.
Looking into the rest of the week. Monday through early Wednesday
looks to be dry with moderating temperatures in the 50s by
Wednesday. Wednesday night another frontal system will bring a
round of rain and possibly snow mix. Temperatures on Thursday will
be cold into the 30s however it will be dry. This dry but cool trend
remains though next weekend.

VFR conditions will prevail through the rest of this morning, but
conditions generally deteriorate this afternoon. CIGs drop to
MVFR this afternoon and down to IFR by the evening. IFR to
potentially even LIFR CIGs will prevail through the remainder of
the TAF period as the deep upper low passes. Light rain showers
will start this morning, transitioning to moderate to heavy rain
by the afternoon and finally to snow in the late evening hours.
TUP is far enough south that some of the showers could be
convective, so carried VCTS along with the rain at 00Z through the
overnight period. As of 12Z, all the precip with this system
looks to be either rain or snow; the likelihood of a wintry mix
has diminished. Winds will start from the east around 10 kt this
morning, gradually backing to the north and picking up speed
throughout the day. By this afternoon, winds will be from the NE
between 15-20kt with gusts near 30kt possible. VSBYs during the
rain today should drop to 3-4SM, deteriorating to 1-2SM as the
precip changes over to snow tonight.
