Moisture has already started increasing across the region early
this morning, evidenced by dewpoints in the upper 40s and lower
50s, as well as comparatively mild overnight temperatures still
holding on in the upper 50s and lower 60s for most as of 2 AM CDT.
The warmer start this morning will pave the way for an
unseasonably warm afternoon today, as flow aloft begins
transitioning from quasizonal to southwesterly ahead of a
deepening trough over the Pacific Northwest. A low-level thermal
ridge will extend northeastward across the region today, and given
expected breezy southwesterly downslope flow at the surface,
temperatures are expected to top out in the middle 80s to around
90 degrees for most, with the greatest likelihood for temperatures
in the 90s across the eastern Permian Basin and through the Pecos
and Rio Grande Valleys. The record high for Midland today is 91
degrees, set back in 1995 and 2001, and the forecast high of 89
degrees will certainly come close.

After the warm day today, lows tonight will only drop into the
upper 50s to middle 60s for most, though slightly cooler
temperatures are expected across the Marfa Plateau and the higher
terrain of the Guadalupe and Davis Mountains. On Sunday, the
pattern will begin to change ahead of the aforementioned trough,
which is progged to deepen significantly as it translates eastward
across the Great Basin into the Rockies. An accompanying jet
around the base of the trough will result in a fairly substantial
uptick in wind speeds, particularly across the Guadalupe Mountains
as early as late Sunday morning. The strongest winds are expected
across the higher elevations, though the southwesterly direction
will be favorable for gap winds through Guadalupe Pass, as well.
Thus, a High Wind Watch is in effect starting late Sunday morning
for the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains. Breezy winds can be
expected elsewhere, with a more southerly component to the wind
direction further east across the Permian Basin and Lower Trans
Pecos as a low-level jet ramps up ahead of the approaching system.
The forecast through Sunday remains dry, however, though
temperatures will begin to trend downwards in response to
decreasing thicknesses and increasing cloud cover, with highs
Sunday afternoon ranging from the upper 70s to upper 80s for most.

By Mon 12Z the mid-level trof axis will be just e of the AZ/NM
line with a pseudo dryline bisecting the PB into the Big Bend
Region. Meanwhile farther w the Pacific front will gaining
momentum as it will have just started to move e of the mtns while
the secondary mid-level speed max to the w and assocd heights
fall favors the aforementioned pseudo dryline to hold up
stationary, if not retreat. By late Mon morning the surface winds
will have shifted to the w and increased with drier and cooler air
following. Post-frontal MSLP gradient will be tight and those
winds, possibly enhanced by high based -SHRA, will crank up into
the 25-30 mph range, close to advisory levels across the plains
and Davis Mtns/Marfa Plateau. Bouts of high wind are possible, if
not likely, in the GDP Mtns Sun night-Mon when NAM12 cross section
supports 40kts well below mtn top level along with some
inconsistent indications of a mtn wave couplet. As far as precip
goes late Sun night-18Z Mon is the favored window ahead of Pacific
front and trof to the w with some wrap around -SHRA possibly
lingering after 18Z Mon. High temps will be noticeably cooler Mon
and fcst high temps will be trended down 5-10 degrees from
previous fcst. Above 6000ft temps may fall into 35-45 degree range
thru the day. Thereafter cool mornings will be favored with the
drier air and high temps will be slow recover going into Thur
ahead of the upper low that is fcst to track to the n bringing
another cold front and some wind.

this afternoon. Winds will weaken and become more southwest to
south this evening. Then, winds are expected to increase out of

HOB beginning around 06z to 12z but confidence is fairly low at
this time.
