Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Little Rock AR
1214 AM CDT Thu Apr 21 2022

.AVIATION...
Updated for 21/06Z terminals...

Expect MVFR to IFR conditions to prevail during the overnight
hours, though it will largely depend upon placement of warm
frontal boundary and convection associated with it. LLWS will also
be a concern at least at HOT and LIT invof FL020. Conditions
should improve in most areas by mid-day, but MVFR/IFR ceilings
will likely remain at least at the northern terminals into the
afternoon and evening hours.
&&

.PREV DISCUSSION...(ISSUED 237 PM CDT Wed Apr 20 2022)

SHORT TERM...Tonight Through Friday

Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms were along and east of
a line from Arkadelphia northward to Batesville in association
with a weak low pressure system exiting AR to the east. Another
weak low pressure system will move across northern AR this evening
bringing another round of scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms to mainly the north half of the state overnight into
early Thursday morning. Thereafter, strong high pressure will
begin to build aloft over the state and a warm front will move
northward bringing a noticeable drying and warming trend. High
temperatures Thursday afternoon will range from near 70 over the
northern higher terrain to the mid 80s over the far south. Highs
Friday afternoon will range from the upper 70s over the northern
higher terrain to the mid 80s over the far south. Lows Thursday
morning will range from the mid 50s over the northern higher
terrain to the mid 60s over the far south. Lows Friday morning
will range from 60 to 65 area- wide.

LONG TERM...Friday Night Through Wednesday

The period begins late Friday with west-southwest upper flow, with
an upper anticyclone to the east and a large-scale upper trough
pattern over the western CONUS. With surface high pressure to our
east, low-level southerly flow will continue through late Sunday,
keeping a steady flow of Gulf air and moisture across the south.

SWTs will move along the mean flow, providing forcing for ascent
across the Plains through the weekend and early part of next week.
At this time, the bulk of the instability looks to remain west and
north of the forecast area. That is, until a cold front approaches
from the NW, initiation a zone of convection from the Great Lakes
region through the Midwest and into the south-central CONUS late Sat
night. The cold front, along with showers and thunderstorms, will
move east/southeastward across the state through Monday, with rain
chances continuing into Tuesday, dissipating from north to south, as
dry air enters the state.

At this time, forecast rainfall through the period (late Sat through
early Tues) will range from half to one inch across the south and
east, 1.5 to 2 inches over central and north, and up to 2.5 inches
across west and northwest AR. WPC's experimental day 5 excessive
rainfall outlook predicts a slight risk for excessive rainfall
across western and northern AR Sun morning through Mon morning, when
the bulk of this rainfall is forecast.

Monday afternoon/evening, northerly wind will spread across the
state behind the cold front, as high pressure from the central
Plains expands southward across the state, bringing subsidence and
dry conditions to the state through late Wednesday.
