Issued at 627 AM CST Tue Feb 22 2022 The bulk of the precipitation is exiting the forecast area, so the timing of POP has been adjusted to reflect this. Another area of showers and a few thunderstorms is possible as the front itself moves through today. Temperatures behind the front have been dropping about 15 degrees followed by a continued steady fall thereafter. Parts of northern Missouri have fallen to near freezing with showers and a few thunderstorms continuing behind the very shallow surface front. Cannot rule out some areas of freezing rain with this, although we expect that warm road temperatures, especially with the sun coming out, will limit this impact. Kimble && .SHORT TERM... (Through Late Tonight) Issued at 223 AM CST Tue Feb 22 2022 Cold front its making its way southeast into our forecast area, slowly for the moment, but it will speed up through the morning as surface low pressure moves to the east. To the south of the front, a moist air mass is leading to showers and thunderstorm development. The most extensive activity will be associated with the low level jet which is situated across our southern forecast area. This is the area of greatest threat for flooding and severe weather, however, thunderstorms are possible along the cold front itself as well. Ahead of the front, temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s, but they will drop quickly into the 40s and 30s behind the front, falling below freezing tonight. Kimble .LONG TERM... (Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 223 AM CST Tue Feb 22 2022 Surface high pressure builds into the Upper Midwest on Wednesday with the first wave of wintry precipitation arriving with a weak wave Wednesday afternoon and evening. There's fairly good agreement among the models that precipitation is likely to spread about as far north as St. Louis on Wednesday evening, but with amounts remaining very light. With cold air in place, this will fall mostly as snow, with some sleet in the southern portion of the forecast area where a narrow layer of warm air aloft exists. Total snow/sleet amounts are likely to be around an inch or less from this wave by Thursday morning. We expect a brief break in the precipitation before the next round arrives, although some light precipitation, flurries or perhaps freezing drizzle, could continue. The next wave moves out onto the plains on Thursday with broad lift bringing a more widespread precipitation event. The warm layer aloft will be a bit further north with this wave, with the snow/sleet line coinciding roughly with the 850 0C line which models are fairly consistent in bringing right up to the St. Louis area, roughly along the I-44 (MO) and I-70 (IL) corridor. Further to the south, the warm layer may be deep enough, and the surface cold layer shallow enough, for freezing rain to be the dominant precipitation type. However, model soundings even as far south as Farmington still support a good chance for any melted drops to refreeze into sleet. So while there is a chance for a significant stretch of freezing rain especially the further south you go, for the moment we still believe there will be a pretty wide corridor where sleet predominates. The heaviest precipitation with this wave will likely come Thursday afternoon and evening, with the last of the precipitation exiting to the east by about midnight. Model solutions seem to be coming into fairly good agreement on the general idea of this period of wintry weather, with the inverted temperature profiles south of St. Louis generally well agreed upon. The biggest remaining uncertainty is on total precipitation amounts. Latest blended guidance gives total liquid equivalent precipitation amounts ranging from 0.2 inches in the northwest to about 0.6 inches in the south, although there is still a good deal of spread in this. At this time, light to moderate accumulations of snow are likely, with sleet cutting into the total accumulations from St. Louis southward. High pressure builds through the region Friday and Saturday bringing dry and cool conditions. Another wave tracking through the southern US does try to bring more moisture in aloft late this weekend, but it is likely to stay to our south.
