NWS St. Louis, MO wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind chill warning went out at Dec 20, 10:37 PM CST, 4 hours 53 minutes earlier. Its key messages:
- 1) A very rare combination of accumulating snowfall (generally 2-4") combined with very strong northwest winds (20-30 mph sustained, 40- 50 mph gusts) are expected to yield near-blizzard conditions for a 3- 6 hour period at any given location on Thursday. Travel will be extremely hazardous if not impossible during the height of the falling (and blowing) snow. While snowfall amounts will not be nearly as substantial, peak impacts during that 4-6 hour period of moderate to heavy snowfall may rival those experienced January 5-6, 2014 (in particular when you include the extremely dangerous cold/wind chills). 2) Speaking of wind chills and extreme cold, minimum wind chills Thursday night into Friday morning are forecast to be in the -25 to - 35F range. These numbers would be about 5 degrees warmer than the coldest wind chill values observed January 6th, 2014. Temperature wise, widespread below zero lows are forecast Friday morning and should be the coldest December temperatures seen since December 23, 1989 (though about 10 degrees warmer compared to 1989). (Wednesday Night - Thursday) All remains on track for a strong arctic cold front to move through the bi-state area very late tonight through early afternoon on Thursday. Cannot rule out at least some isolated rain showers ahead of the front with broad low-level warm air advection. Any rain that does occur however looks very brief, but if it were enough to wet the pavement, a flash freeze would occur as temperatures behind the front rapidly drop. The speed of this frontal passage has sped up at least 3 hours compared to 24 hours ago. Along/behind the front, strong low/mid level frontogenesis will combine with increasing ascent on the synoptic scale associated with the amplifying mid/upper level trough. A 3-6 hour period of moderate to potentially heavy snow is expected on Thursday in any given location. The intensity of the snowfall combined with the increasing northwest winds (20-30 mph sustained, 40-50 mph gusts) will combine to cause at least brief periods of time with near- blizzard conditions. Travel during the height of the snowfall will be extremely hazardous, and nearly impassible. Model QPF has continued to converge toward the 0.15-0.30" range across the area, with the latest NBM 25th/75th percentiles almost exclusively within that range. The 50th percentile/median is closer to 0.20-0.25" for most locations and stuck close to those values. It appears the main difference in total QPF amounts is due to the longevity. The deterministic CMC/ECMWF last snow a bit longer (a bit over 6 hours) due to a sharper, negatively tilted midlevel trough that moves through Thursday afternoon into the early evening. The GFS/NAM do not have this feature nearly as strong and limit the duration to about 3-4 hours. At this point, it is too early to tell which solution is right, but we should gain more clarity when this feature is sampled by the North American RAOB network tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. Forecasting the snow-to-liquid ratio (SLR) is just as (if not more) difficult for this upcoming event. Soundings show a deepening dendritic growth zone (DGZ) throughout the event, with the last 1-2 hours potentially seeing DGZ depths of over 10 kft. The crosshair signature (max lift centered in the DGZ) is present in GFS soundings, though it is generally confined to about 2-3 hours or half the time of falling snow. At the end of the snowfall, max lift is actually centered up to around 400 to 500 hPa or above the DGZ. This may tend to favor more plates/columns vs. stellar dendrites and make the very anomalously deep DGZ moot. Another concern is the strong winds fracturing the dendrites. Unfortunately, there is not a ton of research on the role of strong winds/fracturing and SLRs. The prevailing thought here though is that the strong northwesterly near-surface winds will play a role in lowering SLRs. Given all of this information, it seems prudent to lean a bit above climatology (10-12:1), but not too much higher given concerns alluded to above. For this event, a general 13-15:1 cumulative SLR was used. Total snowfall amounts of 2-4" are forecast across the area. A higher magnitude snowfall (isolated 5-6" amounts) is not impossible if the event ends up lasting a bit longer than forecast and SLRs are closer to 15-20:1. However, this does not seem like the most likely scenario at this point. (Thursday Night - Saturday) The story after the falling snow is the extreme cold and the likelihood of some blowing and drifting of snow due to the very strong northwest winds. Low temperatures for most of the area are likely to drop well below zero, with some locations potentially approaching -10F. As alluded to in the key messages above, these values would be the coldest we have seen in our area during the month of December since 1989. Confidence in these temperatures has increased gradually with time as the air mass (originally from Siberia) has begun to shift south/southeast. Morning lows earlier today in northern British Columbia and parts of the Yukon territory in Canada dropped below -50F! While the air mass will obviously modify as it continues its southeastward plunge, these observations are indicative of its strength. Speaking of the strength of the air mass, record high surface pressures may be recorded later this week in Montana. The current lower 48 record is 1064 hPa from Miles City, MT, from December 1983. The below zero temperatures combined with continued northwest winds of 20-30 mph through Friday will yield minimum wind chill values of -25 to -35F Thursday night into Friday morning. Friday will be the coldest daytime temperatures as well with highs only climbing back into the single digits above zero. Mostly cloudy conditions, some areas of blowing snow, and wind chills below zero will make it look and feel even worse. Friday night and Saturday will not be as cold, nor as windy as earlier periods. Lows are forecast to be in the 0 to -5F range, with minimum wind chill values of -15 to -25F. Similar to Thursday night/Friday, coldest values are likely to be in northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois. Saturday's high temperatures are likely to warm up about 10 degrees compared to Friday, though still generally in the teens or 25-30 degrees below normal for the date. (Saturday Night - Next Tuesday) Moderating temperatures are forecast through the end of the Christmas holiday weekend into early next week as GEFS/EPS mean 850- hPa temperatures climb back into the -5 to -10C range. We will have to keep a close eye however on the potential for northwest flow shortwaves. While climatology favors areas further to the north and east, guidance has continued to suggest that one passing through on/around Monday (12/26) that may be far enough southwest to bring parts of our area accumulating snowfall. However, models really tend to struggle pinning down the track/timing of these shortwaves until about 48-72 hours out. At this very early juncture (still 6 days out), slight chance PoPs for light snow were added Sunday night. Temperature wise, readings should get back into the 20s to low 30s early next week. Troughing aloft in southern Canada is responsible for a diffuse cold
front currently moving through the CWA. This front has been largely
unimpactful, serving only to bring low stratus into the area.
Locations in the northern CWA that have experienced cloud cover all
day are noticeably cooler than those that have had exposure to
the sun during peak heating.
The upper level system that will bring accumulating snow to the area
beginning Wednesday night is currently in southwestern Canada. As
the trough amplifies through the western CONUS, it will spur the
development of surface low pressure lee of the Colorado Rockies.
This low will enforce southeasterly winds over the area beginning
Wednesday morning. Warm air advection along these winds will result
in increased cloud cover through the day Wednesday.
Overall, a quiet Wednesday is in store ahead of the impending winter
storm. Southeasterly winds will remain fairly tame, and temperatures
underneath cloud cover will be slightly below average, ranging from
the low 30s to the north and the low 40s to the south.

likely to drop well below zero, with some locations potentially
approaching -10F. As alluded to in the key messages above, these
values would be the coldest we have seen in our area during the
month of December since 1989. Confidence in these temperatures has
increased gradually with time as the air mass (originally from
Siberia) has begun to shift south/southeast. Morning lows earlier
today in northern British Columbia and parts of the Yukon
territory in Canada dropped below -50F! While the air mass will
obviously modify as it continues its southeastward plunge, these
observations are indicative of its strength. Speaking of the
strength of the air mass, record high surface pressures may be
recorded later this week in Montana. The current lower 48 record
is 1064 hPa from Miles City, MT, from December 1983. The below
zero temperatures combined with continued northwest winds of 20-30
mph through Friday will yield minimum wind chill values of
-25 to -35F Thursday night into Friday morning.
Friday will be the coldest daytime temperatures as well with highs
only climbing back into the single digits above zero. Mostly cloudy
conditions, some areas of blowing snow, and wind chills below
zero will make it look and feel even worse.
Friday night and Saturday will not be as cold, nor as windy as
earlier periods. Lows are forecast to be in the 0 to -5F range, with
minimum wind chill values of -15 to -25F. Similar to Thursday
night/Friday, coldest values are likely to be in northeast Missouri
and west-central Illinois. Saturday's high temperatures are likely
to warm up about 10 degrees compared to Friday, though still
generally in the teens or 25-30 degrees below normal for the date.

Moderating temperatures are forecast through the end of the
Christmas holiday weekend into early next week as GEFS/EPS mean 850-
hPa temperatures climb back into the -5 to -10C range. We will have
to keep a close eye however on the potential for northwest flow
shortwaves. While climatology favors areas further to the north and
east, guidance has continued to suggest that one passing through
on/around Monday (12/26) that may be far enough southwest to
bring parts of our area accumulating snowfall. However, models
really tend to struggle pinning down the track/timing of these
shortwaves until about 48-72 hours out. At this very early
juncture (still 6 days out), slight chance PoPs for light snow
were added Sunday night. Temperature wise, readings should get
back into the 20s to low 30s early next week. Some areas probably
will get back above freezing, with the best chances in
southwestern portions of the CWA.

MVFR conditions are expected for central Missouri and west central
Illinois until the morning hours. However, there may be periods
of low VFR ceilings at KUIN, KCOU, and KJEF that cannot be ruled
out. Ceilings will lower to MVFR conditions by mid morning ahead
of the warm front. After the passage of the warm front VFR
ceilings are expected. Along with the passage of the warm front,
winds will shift from northerly this evening to southeasterly.
For the St. Louis area terminals, it looks like cloud cover will
stay north of the metro and ceilings will remain in low VFR
conditions. MVFR conditions does not seem as likely as previously
thought. Winds will gradually shift from northerly to
southeasterly through the early morning hours.
