Area Forecast Discussion...Updated Aviation National Weather Service Saint Louis MO 551 AM CDT Wed May 4 2022 .SHORT TERM... (Through Late Thursday Evening) Issued at 331 AM CDT Wed May 4 2022 A mid-level trough currently over the Four Corners region will slide east today, throwing the mid-Mississippi Valley into southwesterly flow as the trough moves into the central Plains. A shortwave will move into the region along the southwesterly mid-level flow during the evening and overnight as the LLJ begins to strengthen over southern Missouri. Low-level moisture and minor elevated instability will surge back into the region along the southwesterly flow during the afternoon and evening. MUCAPE values less than 500 J/kg will be enough to generate a few thunderstorms across central and southeast Missouri this evening, but will keep thunderstorms from becoming strong to severe despite the 30-40 kts of 0-6km shear. The mid-level trough will approach the mid-Mississippi Valley Thursday, mirrored at the surface by a low. An attendant warm front will lift north into the forecast area during the day Thursday, eventually stalling near the I-70 corridor. Dewpoints between 60-65F will surge north into southern Missouri south of the front. Showers and thunderstorms will continue across the region during the afternoon Thursday as the surface low begins to track east across the region along the warm front. Minimal instability will build across southern Missouri and Illinois. While some uncertainty still remains, model guidance continues to trend instability downward as the low approaches the region and most guidance is indicating less than 500 J/kg of instability will be available for thunderstorm development. While unlikely, I cannot rule out a thunderstorm becoming strong to severe Thursday afternoon in the 45-50 kts of 0- 6km shear, with damaging winds the primary hazard. While multiple chances for precipitation exist between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon, uncertainty remains in how widespread the coverage will be. PWAT values will be around 1.25 inches, near the 90th percentile for this time of year. In this environment, thunderstorms that develop may be able to produce locally heavy rainfall. Given the recent rainfall over the past couple days, particularly over central Missouri, localized ponding and small stream flooding may be an issue. The surface low will continue to slide east through the region Thursday evening and overnight along the attendant warm front. The minimal instability south of the warm front will be enough to generate a few thunderstorms amid the ongoing showers. Localized ponding and small stream flooding will continue to be a concern with any thunderstorms that develop. MRM .LONG TERM... (Thursday Night through Tuesday) Issued at 331 AM CDT Wed May 4 2022 The cold front associated with the surface low will sweep through the southern half of the forecast area overnight into Friday as the surface low continues to march eastward in tandem with the mid-level trough. There is some uncertainty in how long precipitation will linger behind the low, so am sticking with the NBM to keep POPs into Friday afternoon. Rising heights aloft and the advance of a surface high into the area overnight Friday into Saturday will help to push any lingering precipitation out of the forecast area. A mid-level ridge will build into the mid-Mississippi Valley over the weekend as a mid-level trough comes onshore over the Western CONUS. Southwesterly flow will establish over the mid-Mississippi Valley by the end of the weekend as the trough stalls over the western CONUS and the ridge stalls over the eastern CONUS. Shortwaves along the southwesterly flow will bring the chance for showers and thunderstorms back to the region. The strong southwesterly flow and close proximity to the axis of the mid-level ridge will boost warm air advection and push 850 temperatures into the 20s for the end of the weekend into the first half of the work week. Surface temperatures could push 10-20 degrees above normal by the end of the period, and we could push 90 degrees for the first time this season. MRM && .AVIATION... The next system will begin moving into the region overnight with the chance for showers moving into central Missouri overnight. Showers and the chance for thunderstorms will move east into the St. Louis metro terminals, including KSTL, in the early morning. Ceilings will drop back to MVFR flight conditions as the showers and thunderstorms move into the area, and visibility will drop with the onset of precipitation.
