.SHORT TERM... (Through Late Wednesday Afternoon)

Dry and seasonably cool late April weather is forecast through
tonight as a slow-moving surface anticyclone moves through Missouri
toward the confluence of the Mississippi/Ohio Rivers. The
aforementioned surface high (around 1030 hPa this afternoon) is very
strong for this time of year. In fact, it is expected to be above
the 99th percentile and near-record strength per last night's
NAEFS guidance. This is the most impressive factor of the current
air mass, though 850-hPa temperatures near 0C are also below the
10th percentile for the date. It should come then as no surprise
that well-below normal temperatures will continue today and into
tonight. High temperatures this afternoon should only reach into
the upper 50s to low 60s (even with full sunshine). These values
would be about 10 degrees below normal for the date.
Low temperatures and the potential for frost are again a concern
tonight. The timing/location of the surface high suggests that
portions of southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois will be
coolest tonight, with light southerly return flow beginning
overnight particularly in central and northeast Missouri. Some high-
level clouds may also spill into these same areas beneath
northwest flow aloft. Coolest locations tonight are expected to be
in favored terrain in parts of southeast Missouri where mid 30s
are likely. At least some patchy frost is possible here, though
current thinking is more widespread frost (if it occurs anywhere)
would be isolated and confined to favored valley locations.
Therefore, will not issue a frost advisory tonight but if low
temperatures are ever so slightly cooler, than one may become
necessary.
A quick warmup is forecast on Wednesday as southerly flow at the
surface increases behind the departing surface anticyclone. Highs
are forecast to be in the upper 60s to low 70s, or back to around
normal.

.LONG TERM... (Wednesday Night through Monday)

Chances of showers and a few elevated thunderstorms increases late
Wednesday night through Thursday. In fact, multiple waves of
elevated activity appear likely through Friday night/Saturday
morning due to persistent low-level warm/moist advection, a stalled
warm front just to our south, and at least two midlevel impulses
moving west-east across the mid-Mississippi Valley. Overall, the
late week period is looking increasingly showery with a few rumbles
of thunder along with a return to below normal temperatures
(mainly during the day).
A strong midlevel shortwave trough is forecast to slowly move out of
the northern Rocky Mountains late Friday into Saturday. This feature
is expected to lead to the ejection of a surface low out of the
southern Plains into the mid-Missouri Valley, with a northwest-
southeast warm front attempting to surge northward. Exact details
however with the evolution of the midlevel shortwave and its
attendant surface low/frontal features are highly uncertain at
this time range. The latest WPC cluster analyses of the 500-hPa
height pattern shows variability in both the location and strength
of the shortwave trough in the Plains. Therefore, it remains an
overall low confidence forecast on Saturday, but the
afternoon/evening period may need to be watched for possible
strong/severe convection. Typical caveats of morning (elevated)
convection/cloud debris and location/timing of frontal boundaries
exist, but it appears possible the warm sector gets at least
moderately unstable (about a 50 percent chance of >1000 J/kg of
CAPE on GEFS) with sufficient shear (30-45 knots) for at least the
possibility of organized convection.
Uncertainty in the medium range is higher than normal heading into
next week. The aforementioned WPC cluster analyses at 500 hPa show a
huge spread in how the strong trough evolves Sunday and beyond. Some
of the possible solutions include rapid occlusion/weakening of the
system as it heads northward into Canada, the system heading into
the Great Lakes with some weakening, and the closed low moving
southeastward toward the mid-Mississippi Valley. Obviously, these 3
solutions would have vastly different sensible weather here in the
bi-state area ranging from a continued stormy, southwest flow
aloft pattern (and possibility for strong/severe weather and heavy
rainfall), dry/cooler weather beneath northwest flow aloft as the
surface frontal boundary moves well south of the area, to cooler
and showery weather in the proximity of the meandering closed
midlevel low. Given the inordinate amount of uncertainty, left the
NBM solution alone in the extended which resulted in temperatures
near normal along with continued low PoPs (mainly in southern
sections of the area) in case the frontal boundary stalls out.
