Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.
Rainfall heavier than forecast could cause river levels to rise even
higher than predicted. The National Weather Service will monitor

A large deep upper low/trof centered from the Great Lakes into the
Deep South was the dominant weather feature this morning. This trof
will meander eastward today as a series of vort maxes rotate
through the area within the N-NW flow aloft. These vorticity
maxima will support isolated-scattered showers today, and will be
aided by steepening of low level lapse rates and some weak CAPE
this afternoon. The temperatures this morning are cold enough
through the lower troposphere to support snow showers through
about mid-morning. However the light precipitation rates, warm
ground temps, and marginal surface temperatures should preclude
accumulations. High temperatures will be ridiculous, running
around 20 degrees below average.
These well below average temperatures will continue into tonight.
Any residual showers should dissipate rather quickly after sunset
with loss of heating, and clouds should clear west to east. While
this is far from an ideal radiational cooling set-up, the
weakening pressure gradient and clearing skies should allow for
temperatures in most areas to fall below freezing. Perhaps south
central IL is the only real question mark and that is due to
clearing not commencing until after midnight. With the growing
season in full swing, we have issued a freeze warning for
overnight into early Saturday morning.
The deep trof will continue to shift eastward on Saturday with
heights aloft on the rise in its wake, and due to ridging
beginning to build in from the Plains. This evolution will mark
the very early stage of a pattern change. Temperatures should
respond accordingly with weak WAA commencing aloft and lots of
sunshine, and will be around 10-15 degrees warmer than today, but
still below normal. This however should be the last hurrah of
below normal temps.

A big pattern change will get underway on Sunday with the
aforementioned upper ridge moving through and east of the area,
and a deep long wave trof developing over the western U.S.. This
will mark the beginning of warmer temperatures and a more active
pattern typical of spring with potential for multiple thunderstorm
episodes, including strong-severe storms.
The return of veering south-southwest low level flow will result in
strong WAA on Sunday and the transport of moisture back into the
area. This combined with the eastward spread of a stout EML/steep
mid level lapse rates will result in weak instability by late
afternoon with MUCAPES progged to be near 1000 J/KG across central
and northeast MO by 00z MON to the east of an advancing cold front
and south of a lifting warm front. I think the air mass will remain
capped to surface based storms through 00z, however it appears that
storms should develop along and perhaps to the north of the
advancing cold front on Sunday night in response to lift via a
southwesterly LLJ and glancing ascent from a short wave lifting
across the upper MS Valley. The deep layer shear, steep lapse rates,
and instability are in a favorable range for organized severe storms
with large hail the predominant threat due to the lapse rates and
chance that storms may be largely elevated. At this time the most
favored location would be across central and northeast MO into
west central IL.
There are some key differences in the deterministic models and
ensemble guidance Monday through at least Wednesday. First how far
this initial cold front will penetrate into the area and thus the
boundary location, breadth of the warm sector and instability
stratification. The second key difference is the handling of the
upper trof and attendant surface system as it moves eastward in
the Tuesday night-Wednesday night time frame and impacts the mid
MS Valley. That said the overall large scale pattern is worrisome
with potential for a relatively undiluted EML for several days and
favorably strong deep layer shear, supporting thunderstorm
chances and potential for strong-severe storms at times Monday-
Wednesday. Temperatures should be normal to above normal during
this time frame however there is as much as a 10 degree spread
between the upper and lower quartile in the NBM guidance.

afternoon and then the general trend should be for flight
conditions to improve to VFR from mid-late afternoon. Scattered
rain and snow showers will persist early this morning, decreasing
in coverage from mid-late morning. Additional isolated to scattered
showers are expected this afternoon, however the TAFs are free of
any mention of them due to low coverage and limited terminal
impacts. Gusty northwest winds will continue through the day,
diminishing late afternoon-early evening.
