Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.
Rainfall heavier than forecast could cause river levels to rise even
higher than predicted. The NationalWeather Service will monitor this

Area Forecast Discussion...Updated Aviation National Weather Service Saint Louis MO 618 AM CDT Tue Apr 5 2022 .SHORT TERM... (Through Late Wednesday Afternoon) Issued at 431 AM CDT Tue Apr 5 2022 Active weather conditions can be expected today through tomorrow morning, with roughly two rounds of showers and at least a few thunderstorms expected. A few strong to severe storms will also be possible between late afternoon and roughly midnight tonight. Early morning water vapor imagery clearly reveals a southern stream shortwave currently progressing eastward across the southern plains, and forcing from this wave is contributing to several areas of showers and storms across the lower and middle Mississippi Valley regions. While the most significant activity remains well south of our local area, a lifting warm front is acting as a focus for a persistent band of showers across east-central Missouri and southwest Illinois early this morning. Due to the almost negligible instability present, no lightning has been observed with this activity, although it won't be completely impossible to see a few strikes as the morning progresses. Over the next several hours, this band is expected to gradually expand in coverage as it slowly moves to the northeast, producing light to occasionally moderate rainfall until it exits the region by early afternoon. Much of the remainder of the afternoon will be dry across the area, perhaps with some peeks of sunshine at times, particularly in our more southern areas like the Ozarks. This should allow temperatures to climb into the low 60s to low 70s, with the warmest conditions expected in those aforementioned southern areas that see more sun. More importantly, this modest surface heating will also allow the atmosphere to destabilize a bit ahead of an advancing cold front. latest high resolution and ensemble guidance has increased instability projections slightly, despite the presence of poor mid level lapse rates. While the latter parameter will certainly limit the potential destabilization, SREF and HREF guidance suggests that between 250 and 500 J/kg of CAPE is likely to develop by late afternoon across a fairly broad region, with an upper limit of approximately 750 to 1000 J/kg possible across a more limited area. This is certainly not an explosive environment by any stretch of the imagination, but this slight increase in instability projections is just enough to warrant an increased potential for a few strong to severe storms, especially given the ample shear expected. As an upper trough and strong jet streak approaches the area from the northwest this afternoon and evening, effective 0-6km bulk shear parameters will increase to between 40 and 50 kt, with 20-30 kt of 0- 1km shear and 100 to 150 m2/s2 of 0-1km SRH as well. Given the above parameters, the most likely hazard is expected to be occasional damaging wind gusts, but we can't rule out a brief tornado or two either. As for the timing and location of storms, the most favorable parameter space for strong or severe storms is expected to exist across northeast and central Missouri, as well as west-central Illinois, between approximately 5 PM and 12 AM. Storms will likely develop along and ahead of an advancing cold front, and while storms may initially be discrete, they are expected to quickly grow upscale into a linear complex as the evening progresses. Instability parameters weaken considerably late in the evening, but widespread showers will continue to spread into the southeastern half of Missouri through the remainder of the night and into tomorrow morning. Dry conditions are expected the remainder of daylight hours Wednesday, and despite the passing cold front, temperatures will only be about 5 to 10 degrees cooler than today. BRC .LONG TERM... (Wednesday Night through Monday) Issued at 431 AM CDT Tue Apr 5 2022 After showers wind down Wednesday, attention then turns to the approach of an expanding upper low across the upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes regions, which will drive a much cooler airmass southward Thursday and Friday. Ensemble guidance continues to indicate that this cool airmass will be both deep and anomalous, with 500 mb temperature anomalies of -2 to -3 sigma expected to spread across the entire area. This airmass will make its presence felt as soon as Thursday morning, becoming firmly entrenched in the area by Thursday night and Friday morning. Temperatures Thursday afternoon are likely to only rise into the mid 40s to mid 50s, with temperatures about 5 to 8 degrees cooler still on Friday. Meanwhile, this cooling aloft is also expected to generate some weak instability, and scattered to numerous convective showers are expected to move into the area from the north by early Thursday afternoon, with multiple waves of these showers expected between then and Friday afternoon. This will largely fall as a cool rain, but a few wet snowflakes can't be ruled out overnight Thursday and early Friday morning when temperatures are expected to dip into the low to mid 30s. Showers are likely to clear up Friday evening as the upper trough begins to move east, and an upper ridge begins to build in its wake. However, cold air will linger into Saturday morning, and with a light freeze possible across much of the area. Over the weekend, the building ridge is expected to bring a rapid warming trend, with mostly dry conditions expected aside from perhaps some shower activity late in the day Sunday. This warming trend continues into Monday, and latest guidance suggests that a return to a more active pattern will be possible early in the week. BRC && .AVIATION... (For the 12z TAFs through 12z Wednesday Morning) Issued at 612 AM CDT Tue Apr 5 2022 Ceilings are quickly deteriorating to IFR levels at St. Louis area terminals early this morning as light showers spread into the area, and showers/low ceilings are also expected to move into the vicinity of COU & JEF shortly as well. This will continue through late morning before ceilings lift back to VFR levels and showers end for much of the remainder of the afternoon. Some ceiling reductions will also be possible at UIN slightly later as well. Another round of showers will move through the region between late afternoon and evening, including likely some thunderstorms. UIN is most likely to be directly impacted by stronger storms, followed closely by COU and JEF. Gusty winds will be likely as storms pass, along with periods of MVFR ceilings. Showers and thunderstorms are likely by late evening in the St. Louis area, but will likely be weaker.
