We have expanded the Wind Advisory a bit further to the west into
the eastern part of the St. Louis metro. Observations in the area
have already shown some gusty winds, and forecasts indicate this
area has a good likelihood of seeing gusts over 40KT through this
afternoon. Further to the west, we continue to monitor the line of
storms moving east through central Missouri with the potential for
damaging winds and a few tornadoes. This looks to arrive in the
western end of the St Louis metro around 11AM or so. The cold
front itself is still a bit further back in western Missouri, but
will make progress eastward today as well.

Key messages in the short-term forecast:
1) A line of thunderstorms capable of producing severe weather is
expected to traverse the area today, strengthening in eastern
Missouri later this morning. Damaging wind is the primary threat,
but a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.
2) Along with the line of storms, strong winds appear likely across
the same area this morning into the afternoon. Wind gusts up to
45mph (or higher in thunderstorms) are likely. A Wind Advisory takes
effect at 9am in southeast Missouri and south-central Illinois.
The remnants of last night's QLCS is crossing northeast Missouri at
this hour. Overnight, it caused wind damage in northwest Missouri.
Brief surges along the line amidst ~500J/kg of MLCAPE that enhanced
the potential for tornadoes prompted a few Tornado Warnings in west-
central Missouri. Regional surface analysis places a surface low
centered over western Iowa, with a warm front draped across northern
Missouri extending southeast just north of St. Louis and through
southwest Illinois. In the warm sector, dewpoints jumped into the
mid/upper 50s and temperatures held steady through the night in the
upper 60s/low 70s.
Little is changed in the expectations over the next 18 hours
regarding the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms. While
CAMs suggest the current line of storms will weaken as it enters an
area of weaker shear and hardly any instability, the QLCS is poised
to redevelop when it enters a more favorable kinematic
environment during the morning and into the early afternoon.
Attention will be paid to the area along and south of I-70 in
Missouri and Illinois, where SPC Hourly Mesoscale Analysis
redevelops up to 500J/kg of MLCAPE this morning and strong mid-
level PVA will occur. This area was also largely untouched by the
overnight convection. Shear parameters will continue to be quite
impressive across this area, with upwards of 60-70kts of deep-
layer shear and 30-40kts of 0-1km shear likely. What continues to
lack is instability downstream: even the more bullish CAMs
struggle to develop more than 250J/kg of MLCAPE during the
afternoon when the better mid-level forcing and low-level shear
will exist. However, the combination of strong shear and non-zero
instability, along with a stout 60-70kt LLJ, will make up for the
weak instability and provide the opportunity for damaging wind and
a brief tornado along the line during the late morning into the
afternoon.
Ahead of the QLCS, a tightening surface pressure gradient will
likely cause southerly wind gusts exceeding 40kts in far southeast
Missouri and south-central Illinois. The intense LLJ will, in part,
mix down to the surface thanks to strong lapse rates in the very
lowest layers (according to model soundings) and that mixing will be
amplified by even modest downdrafts or outflow. As such, in addition
to the potential for damaging thunderstorm-induced winds, strong non-
convective winds are likely tomorrow morning into the afternoon
along and ahead of the convective system. A Wind Advisory will
take effect this morning across the area previously mentioned.
Rain will persist into the late afternoon and evening, weakening in
intensity at first behind the departing convective line. As the cold
front moves through the area this evening, a brief period of more
moderate rain rates can be expected before rain begins to taper off
more concretely. Temperatures will drop to the mid/upper 30s
overnight as colder air rushes in behind the front. A second, less
impressive shortwave will translate along the base of the larger
trough tomorrow, but it will be strong enough to induce a round of
rain and snow. Accumulations will likely be minor, if any actually
occur, given how warm the ground will be, the light intensity of the
precipitation, and the inefficient dendritic growth that is
depicted in model soundings.

.LONG TERM... (Thursday Night through Tuesday)

Behind the shortwave on Thursday, guidance agrees on a brief period
of ridging building into the central CONUS and high surface pressure
expanding across the CWA for Friday. Temperatures will likely be
below normal, though as the high passes to our east and southerly
return flow takes hold we should warm into the mid/upper 50s
(particularly in central/southeast Missouri. Upstream, another
amplified mid-level wave will approach the bi-state area and develop
a weak surface low across the central Plains. The upper-level
support for this system will be weak and disorganized by the time it
reaches the CWA, evidenced by deterministic guidance and the WPC
Cluster Analysis depicting a weak shortwave. There is some
discrepancy regarding where any light precipitation would occur, but
probabilities of 0.5" of precipitation among the ensemble
guidance are slim to none. Little impact at all is expected with
this wave of rain.
Following this system, zonal flow aloft may open us up to passing
shortwaves and light rain, but a more organized system appears
likely during the middle of next week. A mid-level trough in the
southern stream will amplify across the southwest CONUS, opening the
central US up to broad diffluent flow/surface cyclogenesis and
increasing the chances for precipitation. While there is agreement
on the occurrence of a system next week, WPC Cluster Analysis
highlights notable differences in timing and amplitude of the wave.
Despite these differences, and the wide statistical spread of the
deterministic/ensemble guidance, a trend warmer (closer to average)
is expected for next week. As the details for next week's system
come into focus, this spread will narrow.

Rain is becoming more widespread at this hour across the area,
though most of it has evaded the St. Louis metropolitan terminals.
A cold front is draped across northwest Missouri and slowly
advancing east. More showers and storms are advancing from
southwest Missouri and will blossom over the terminals in the next
few hours.
Showers and storms will organize into a line this morning and move
through the St. Louis metropolitan area in the late morning and
early afternoon. MVFR CIGs appear poised to develop as rain
continues to fall today. Winds will be quite strong ahead of the
line of storms and the cold front aiding to force it. Gusts as
high as 40kts are possible this afternoon, and could be higher
during showers and storms that tap into a strong low- level jet
(roughly 60kts in strength).
Winds will weaken slightly and shift out of the west this
afternoon and evening from west to east, but MVFR CIGs will likely
persist. Guidance is hinting at lower CIGs, but they seem too low
given what has occurred so far so this forecast is a conservative
one in terms of CIG height.
