.SHORT TERM...  (Through Late Friday Night)

As of 3 PM, widespread heavy rain has ended for at least the next
several days across the region, which is quite a relief for St.
Louis and the surrounding area where record rain has fallen over
the past two weeks. However, while MOST of the heavy rain has
ended for the next several days, today and tomorrow will continue
to feature chances for isolated to widely scattered showers and a
few thunderstorms during the mid to late afternoon periods.

While a cold front has settled into the region, it's forward
progress was stalled across northern Missouri and west central
Illinois. As a result, a modified but still very humid airmass
remains in place across most of the region, leaving the door open
for afternoon destabilization and isolated to widely scattered
showers. On the other hand, very little forcing remains in place an
an upper level ridge slowly nudges eastward into the region, with
few impulses or other upper level features that could provide a
boost for initiation. During the afternoon today, convergence along
a boundary associated with a departing MCV across southern Illinois
could provide a focus for convective development, although
confidence is low regarding whether this will occur locally. Should
a few showers develop though, deep warm cloud depths and a high
moisture content (2 to 2.25") will continue to support efficient
rain rates. Meanwhile, slow storm motions would also be expected,
and the combination of these two factors means that we can't rule
out very isolated flooding impacts across extremely limited
areas...especially if such a storm forms over areas that have been
significantly impacted by recent rains. Fortunately, modest
instability and very weak wind shear will likely preclude any
notable storm organization and will limit the potential for anything
to become strong or severe. These shower chances will be very
similar both this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon, with the best
chances from the Mississippi river eastward.

Otherwise, temperatures today will settle near or slightly below
seasonal averages, albeit with high humidity. Some patchy fog may
develop overnight thanks to the lingering moisture and gradually
decreasing cloud cover, but confidence is low regarding the
potential coverage of said fog given that skies are not likely to
completely clear. Temperatures tomorrow will likely be around 2-4
degrees warmer than today, with continued high humidity and heat
indexes approaching 95 to 100 degrees in places.

.LONG TERM...  (Saturday through Next Thursday)

Long term key messages:

1) Slightly above normal temperatures and continued high humidity
will push heat indexes to between 100 and 105 degrees both Saturday
and Sunday afternoons.

2) While the possibility of isolated showers and thunderstorms will
continue Saturday and Sunday, rain chances increase significantly
between Sunday night and Tuesday morning as another weak cold front
sinks into the area.

An upper level ridge, currently located over the western Plains will
continue to build eastward on Saturday and Sunday. Southerly winds
will keep the area warm and moist through the weekend, with the heat
index nearing or reaching 105 both days. Ensemble temperature
forecast spreads remain generally narrow over the weekend,
suggesting that the timing of the front is trending toward a more
certain overnight or later arrival of a cold front well beyond peak
heating Sunday.

An upper level shortwave trough will advance across the northern
CONUS on Sunday and Monday. The passage of this trough will bring a
cold front on Monday; however, confidence is not high on the speed
and placement of the front. This cold front is likely to bring
precipitation to the area. And while models show weak instability
and low CAPE on Monday, the potential still exists for heavy rains.
This is partially due to uncertainty on the speed of the cold front;
a slower front is more likely to bring heavy rain than a faster
front. Also, the ground is still quite saturated from the large
amount of rainfall received over the past 2 weeks, which heightens
the potential for heavy rain to cause flooding where it does occur.

While it's still too early to fully determine the evolution of
precipitation this far out, there are some additional parameters
that suggest periods of heavy rain will be possible across most of
the CWA during this timeframe...albeit not the entire timeframe.
Ensemble members support this general concept, with most members
producing at least some precipitation, with a smattering of members
producing values between 1-2 inches. Precipitable water values will
also likely climb to between 1 and 2 sigma above normal within this
airmass. Meanwhile, at least some enhancement of a southwesterly low
level jet is suggested by deterministic runs, which could act as a
focus for additional showers and thunderstorms.

Either way, the cold front will usher in cooler temperatures. After
the passage of the front on Monday, it looks to be relatively calm
with low precipitation chances through mid-week next week.

.AVIATION...  (For the 06z TAFs through 06z Friday Night)

Primary concern overnight is with the potential for fog
development. We find ourselves on the southwestern periphery of
high pressure where we haven't gotten a good drying flow but with
winds nearly calm overnight under a clear sky. The temperature has
already fallen to the dewpoint in some spots, and fog development
is a good possibility overnight along with accompanying lower
ceilings. The most likely area for fog to develop is in valley
locations that received rain this evening, mainly KSUS. But more
widespread fog is possible especially along and north of the
remnant cold front affecting KUIN. There's less confidence at the
metro St Louis terminals, but it remains a possibility. Any fog or
lower ceilings will disperse shortly after 12Z giving way to VFR
conditions and light SE winds tomorrow. Some afternoon cumulus is
possible as well as a stray shower, although the likelihood of
affecting any TAF site is low.
