Main concern mid week into next weekend will be dangerous heat and
how long it will last. Will keep the heat advisory going through
Wednesday evening.
Latest water vapor imagery is showing the center of the upper high
near the mouth of the Mississippi with the ridge extending north
into the Upper Midwest. At the surface, a warm front extends from
western Iowa through central and southern Missouri into the Mid
South. A MCS was along the Nebraska/Iowa border moving to the east
early this morning which most of the CAMS solutions and the forward
propagating vectors suggest will stay just north of the area. The
HREF is showing the warm front moving northeast across the CWA this
afternoon in a very unstable environment with minimal CINH under the
upper level ridge, so will maintain the slight chance for showers
and thunderstorms over much of the area. Then dry weather is
expected over much of the area tonight into Tuesday. Have continued
with a slight chance of thunderstorms over south central Illinois on
Tuesday afternoon as forecast soundings at KSLO are showing MLCAPES
near 3000 J/kg with only small amount of CINH compared to the rest
of the CWA.
Highs today in the mid 90s combined with dewpoints in the mid 70s
will result heat indices in the 100-106 range. The HREF is showing
the upper high building northward over the area tomorrow resulting
more sun and highs a few degrees warmer causing heat indices to
climbing into the 105-110 range.

.LONG TERM... (Tuesday Night through Sunday)

There continues to be relatively good agreement between the
operational GFS/ECMWF that the upper high will expand over the Mid
South as a series of shortwaves moves through the Upper Midwest
through Thursday. While the front is expected to remain north of
the area through on Wednesday, it still appears that the front will
move back south and stall over the area Thursday into Friday. This
will cause an increase in the coverage of showers and thunderstorms
over the area from midweek to late in the week. The model remains
consistent in shifting the upper high west into the Rockies by the
weekend which will bring northwesterly flow over Missouri and
Illinois Missouri and Illinois. This will push the front south of
the area. Will keep with a chance of showers and thunderstorms on
Saturday but dry on Sunday as high pressure moves in behind the
front.
Heat will continue to build across the area Wednesday and possibly
Thursday and Friday with 850mb temperatures climbing into 23-25C
range. The main question about the need to extend the advisory or
to upgrade to a warning is will the aforementioned front moving
farther south that expected which would cause temperatures to be
cooler than currently forecast. Another issue will be with the
front in the area, showers and thunderstorms and resulting in
convective debris which will limit daytime heating. This will need
to be addressed in future updates.
For now, with mainly sunny skies and winds out of the southwest,
this will result in highs in the 95 to around 100 degree range
resulting in a heat index of 105 to 110 over much of the area on
Wednesday. With the front entering the area on Thursday, still
expect highs to reach the mid 90s to around 100 degrees ahead of the
front, but with dewpoints slightly higher because pooling along the
front. This will result in similar heat indices to Wednesdays.
Fridays highs currently forecast to be in the 90s with heat indices
of 105-110 south of the front. Temperatures are expected to fall
back closer to normal over the weekend behind the front. The NBM
temperature plumes follow along well with this idea, and they show
more spread in the plumes by late in the week indicating uncertainty
in how quickly south the front will move through the area.

High pressure will dominate the weather during the TAF period,
leading to limited TAF concerns. There is a chance that we see
some isolated thunderstorms this afternoon, but given limited
coverage and low confidence that a terminal will be directly
impacted by a storm, I've left any mention out of the TAFs. The
second concern is the annual firework smoke that plagues the STL
metro terminals on July 4th. Given generally light winds this
evening, I expect smoke to drop visibilites below 6SM to as low as
3SM just like it does each year with similar conditions. Finally,
we expect to see winds become more southwesterly tomorrow as the
high shifts further east of the region.
