Point Conception tonight through Tuesday morning with a chance of
dense fog. Gusty Santa Ana winds will return late Tuesday through
Wednesday and much warmer temperatures through Thursday. A

degrees cooler than this time yesterday. Some areas such as the
Ventura County coast are almost 10 degrees cooler! As you go
inland to the mountains and interior valleys of LA and Ventura
Counties, temperatures are 4 to 8 degrees warmer as offshore flow
has weakened reducing the cold advection. An eddy is expected to
develop tonight which will help bring marine layer stratus back
into the equation. Low clouds are expected to develop across the
coastal areas south of Point Conception, maybe even the lower
coastal valleys if the eddy is strong enough. A very shallow
inversion will lead to the potential of dense fog forming over
these areas overnight. There is also a chance of low clouds
developing over the Central Coast but northerly flow aloft may
keep it away.

On Tuesday, another shortwave trough digs southward to our east
from the Great Basin, then reaching the Four Corners by early
Wednesday. This is a similar pattern to what we saw Friday night
into Saturday, but this trough placement is farther east. Just
like what we saw Friday, the LAX-DAG gradient turns offshore by
Tuesday afternoon then tightens through the evening and overnight
hours. The NAM forecasts the gradient to peak around -7 mb, but
this is usually overdone and will likely peak closer to -5 mb.
This will generate another Santa Ana wind event, developing in the
mountains and valleys Tuesday afternoon, then strengthening
Tuesday night into early Wednesday. With the main energy of the
trough much farther east than the last event, there will be much
less upper-level support and cold advection with this one. Upper-
level support of around 45 kt up to 850 mb is forecast with this
event so it's more marginal than the last. As is typical with
Santa Ana events, winds will peak Wednesday morning with gusts
between 35 and 50 mph expected. This event has the more typical
northeast component to the wind, so the San Gabriel Valley should
be spared. Wind Advisories have been issued for the LA County
mountains, Santa Monica mountains, Santa Clarita, western San
Fernando, and Ventura County valleys effective from 4 pm Tuesday
to noon Wednesday. The question will be if the Ventura County
coast and LA County coast from Malibu to the Hollywood Hills will
see gusty winds. The local 3 km WRF solution indicates advisory
level winds filtering down, but the EPS ensemble members keep it
more marginal. Also, with low clouds in the picture Tuesday
morning and a shallow, strong inversion, winds may ride over the
inversion. If this is the case, then the clouds may hang around
the coast into the afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to cool a bit on Tuesday as the air mass
cools from the trough dropping down. With the increasing offshore
flow later in the day, temperatures may be a little warmer than
expected so have gone a bit above guidance over the mountains and
valleys. On Wednesday the offshore flow will once again bring
temperatures across the coasts and coastal valleys back up into
the mid 70s. There will be some additional warming on Thursday as
there will be lingering sub- advisory offshore flow. Mid to upper
70s will be likely over the coasts and coastal valleys with some
of the typically warmer areas approaching 80.

.LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...24/247 PM.

The deterministic GFS and ECMWF both indicate the persistent
ridge will start to break down Friday and a cutoff low traverses
towards SoCal on Saturday. Then another little pop-up ridge
appears on Sunday. A cooling trend should develop through the
weekend as the ridge breaks down, but there is spread in the
ensemble solutions as to the amount of cooling expected. Continued
offshore flow is likely through the weekend as gradients remain
offshore. Gusty northeast winds are possible Friday into Saturday
but likely remaining below advisory level.

A pattern change is on the horizon for next week as the large
blocking ridge over the West Coast will be replaced by a deep
trough. The deterministic GFS is definitely excited about possible
rain but its ensembles are not. Neither is the ECMWF and its
ensembles. However, the NBM indicates a slight chance of rain
developing across northern areas on Monday so will keep that in
place as there is lots of uncertainty. Early February may be our
next shot at precipitation but it is still a ways off and a lot
can change between now and then.

At 1739Z, there was a weak marine inversion at 200 feet at KLAX.
The top of the inversion was at 1400 feet with a temp of 16C

Skies were clear across the region this morning and VFR conds are
expected at all sites thru this evening. Expect some low clouds
with IFR to LIFR conditions across coastal sections of L.A. County
and possibly Ventura County after midnight tonight.

KLAX...Moderate to high confidence in 18Z TAF. There is a 20-30%
chance that cigs will arrive as early as 04Z. Expect any east
wind component to remain below 8 knots.

KBUR...High confidence in 12Z TAF with VFR conds thru the pd.

.MARINE...24/941 AM.

For the outer waters, winds and seas will increase to Small Craft
Advisory (SCA) levels this afternoon, then continue at SCA levels
thru Tue afternoon. SCA conds are not expected Tue night thru Fri.

For the Inner Waters north of Pt. Sal, SCA level NW winds are
no longer expected this afternoon and evening, but the situation
will be monitored closely for possible local gusts to 25 kt.
After this evening, SCA conds are not expected thru Fri.

For the Inner Waters south of Pt. Conception, there is a 30% chance
of SCA level W-NW winds across western portions of the SBA Channel
this evening. There is a 30-40% chance of SCA level NE winds from
Malibu to Ventura out to Anacapa/Santa Cruz Islands late Tuesday
night and Wed morning. Otherwise, SCA conds are not expected thru
Fri.

.BEACHES...24/1002 AM.

A large west swell with a long period of 16 to 18 seconds will
push into the coastal waters today and linger thru Wed, bringing
elevated to high surf and dangerous rip currents to all west-
facing beaches of Southwest California. High Surf Advisories are
in effect for the Central Coast thru Wed evening, and for the
Ventura County coast from this afternoon thru Wed evening.
Breaking waves of 8 to 10 feet with local sets to 12 feet are
expected on the Central Coast, with surf of 6 to 8 feet on the
Ventura County coast. Surf on L.A. County beaches will likely not
reach high surf criteria, but elevated surf of 4 to 6 feet is
likely on west-facing beaches this evening thru Wed.

There will be an increased risk of drowning due to strong rip
currents so it is best to stay out of the water. Remember to stay
away from rock walls and jetties and never turn your back to the
ocean when high surf is expected.
