Offshore flow in place will keep skies mostly clear and daytime
temperatures above average for this time of year through the
weekend. Breezy Santa Ana winds today, then strong and
potentially damaging Santa Ana winds possible Friday night and
Saturday. A return to onshore flow is expected early next week.

***UPDATE***
Weak Santa Ana event today with low end advisory level winds in
the usual parts of LA/Ventura Counties (mainly valleys and
mountains). Gradients and upper support weaken tonight into early
Friday before increasing again in the afternoon and especially
Friday night (see below for more details as forecast hasn't
changed). Otherwise, a pretty quiet day today with warmer
temperatures from the downsloping winds and positively tilted
ridge axis peaking this afternoon. Highs well into the 70s
expected most coast/valley areas and 60s elsewhere.

Offshore pressure gradients will weaken some tonight and early
Friday, but an inside-slider trough digging through the eastern
Great Basin and into the Imperial Valley between Friday and Friday
night will reinforce the offshore flow pattern. The trough will
provide low-level thermal support and wind support aloft for a
strong and potentially damaging Santa Ana wind event between
Friday night and Saturday. Local 3-km WRF solutions are
advertising damaging winds gusts and very windy conditions across
much of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Windy conditions could
even extend into the San Gabriel Valley, Antelope Valley, the
mountains of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo County mountains,
and out the offshore islands. Less wind prone areas with Santa Ana
winds could see windier conditions with this event. The tighter
offshore flow pattern will also allow for much stronger Santa
Lucia winds as well on Friday night and into Saturday. EPS
ensemble members for K3A6 indicate a fair amount of solutions near
high-wind warning criteria. EPS ensemble 6 hour mean gusts hover
around 52 mph around daybreak Saturday. With ensemble means
tipping more in favor and local 3-km WRF and deterministic NAM-WRF
and GFS solutions offering up run-to-run consistency, a high wind
watch was issued for the mountains and most of the valleys in Los
Angeles and Ventura County. NAM-WRF 850 mb winds continue to peak
around 50-60 knots across Los Angeles County and 950 mb winds
peak around 50-60 knots near the Los Angeles-Ventura County
border. NAM-WRF 850 mb thermal gradients tighten to around 11
degrees Celsius across the San Gabriel Range on Saturday morning.
Daytime temperatures will warm to above seasonal normals for this
time of year as offshore flow will remain in place through the
period, but in wind-sheltered areas and the interior valleys,
overnight low temperatures could get quite cold. Temperatures
during this period were cooled below previously forecasted and NBM
values. The coldest temperatures are expected for the interior
valleys, but frost headlines cannot be ruled out entirely for the
Central Coast and the Ojai Valley in the pattern.
.LONG TERM (SUN-WED)...20/411 AM.
An offshore flow pattern looks to generally continue through the
period. Gusty offshore winds look to linger into Sunday as the
pressure gradients slowly weaken. Early frames of the local 3-km
WRF solutions suggest advisory level Santa Ana winds continuing
across most of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties into Sunday.
Quite a few EPS ensemble perturbations advertise similar winds to
the local 3-km WRF at K3A6 for Sunday with ensemble mean wind
gusts hover around 35 mph for K3A6.
An extended dry weather pattern looks to linger through the
majority of next week. Almost all members of the EPS, GEFS, and
CMC forecast ensembles suggest little cloud coverage into next
Thursday. There is a period when low clouds and fog could reappear
briefly between Monday and Tuesday when weak onshore flow
reestablishes, but any low clouds and fog would likely be confined
to the coastal areas as dense fog. The forecast temperatures
trends from the NBM fall inline with this idea and bring cooler
conditions for Monday and Tuesday, but start warming the air mass
again for Wednesday and Thursday.
Cold overnight low temperatures are likely to linger for the
interior portions and wind sheltered areas at least into Tuesday.
The forecast breaks away from NBM values, trending colder for the
Antelope Valley and the San Luis Obispo County interior valleys.

At 1656Z, the layer at KLAX was around 200 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was 1800 feet with a temperature of 17 C.
Skies were clear and there were VFR conds across the region. VFR
conds are expected for the remainder of the period.
Areas of gusty NE winds will affect the mtns of L.A. and Ventura
Counties, the northern and western valleys of L.A, County, and the
Ventura County valleys thru mid afternoon, with areas of LLWS,
some light to moderate turbulence, and mdt UDDF.

For the Outer Waters, moderate to high confidence in winds and
seas remaining below Small Craft Advisory (SCA) levels thru Fri.
For Fri night and Sat, there is a 30% chance of SCA level N to NE
winds across the northern two zones (PZZ670/673). SCA level NE winds
are likely across the southern zone (PZZ676) late Fri night and
Sat, and there is a 40% chance of Gale force gusts across eastern
sections. For Sat night thru Mon, there is a 30% chance of SCA
level NW to N winds across all Outer Waters zones.
For the Inner Waters north of Pt. Sal, there is 50% chance of SCA
level E-NE winds late Fri night thru Sat morning. Otherwise, good
confidence that winds and seas will remain below SCA levels.
For the Inner Waters south of Pt. Conception, moderate confidence.
NE winds are underperforming and the SCA has been truncated to end
at noon and winds have not reached the Ventura coastal sections as
yet. The SCA may need to be canceled before noon. However,
widespread SCA level NE winds are likely across the eastern SBA
Channel and much of the inner waters south of Pt. Mugu Fri
night/Sat. There is a 50% chance of Gale force winds from Ventura
to Santa Monica and out to Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands Fri
night into Sat, and thru the San Pedro Channel out to Catalina
Island. SCA conds are possible Sat night into Sunday morning.
There is a 40% chance of SCA level NE winds late Sat night and
Sun morning from and Ventura to Santa Monica and out to Anacapa
and Santa Cruz Islands. SCA conds are not expected Sun afternoon
thru Mon.
For Fri night and Sat, strong northeast winds will likely affect
east-facing harbors including Avalon Harbor, Two Harbors and
Smugglers Cove, generating short-period, wind-driven seas and
