Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
325 AM PDT Mon Jun 13 2022
.SYNOPSIS...13/316 AM.
Skies will clear faster today, but temperatures will end up
cooler. significant winds will develop in the mountains the Santa
Barbara south coast. Much warmer temperatures are forecast for
Tuesday and Wednesday will much less marine layer clouds. A
significant cool down forecast for next weekend.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-WED)...13/313 AM.
A decent (for June) trof is approaching the state. It's first
effect will be on the marine layer which will be lifted. The
deeper marine layer has brought stratus to most of the coasts and
vlys save for the Santa Clarita. Secondly the trof will bring
north flow to the northern coastal slope and create clouds and a
slight chc of showers. Thirdly it will bring plenty of cool air
and will drop temps across most of the area by 5 to 10 degrees (locally
10 to 20 degrees along the Kern County border). The SBA south
coasts and the VTA county coasts will be notable exception as
north flow will bring some warming to those areas. Lastly and most
notably the trof (more precisely its passage) will bring north
flow, northerly upper support and cool air advection to the area.
All of these factors will add up to a moderate to strong wind
event. Warning level gusts 60 to 65 mph are likely 20 miles either
side of the I-5 corridor. The SBA south coast will see strong
advisory level gusts and even isolated gusts to 60 mph through the
windiest canyon passes. Advisory level gusts will also develop
across western SBA county, the Lake Casitas area, the interior SBA
county mtns, and the Santa Clarita Vly. For full details including
timing and wind speeds please see the product LAXNPWLOX.
The north winds will shift a little to the NE tonight. This will
eliminate most of the marine layer stratus although some will
likely develop in the LAX to LGB area.
The Northeast flow, lack of cool air advection and missing marine
layer will allow for a general warm up across the area. Strong
winds will continue to affect the VTA/LA mtns and the SBA south
coast (although there may be a late morning through mid afternoon
lull. Dry air will move into the interior and with the heat and
the wind there will be elevated fire risk...please see the fire
weather discussion below for more details.
Continued offshore flow on Wednesday (at least in the morning)
will keep the stratus away and allow for 8 to 12 degrees of
warming. Max temps will end up about 10 degrees above normal.
The Vlys and the rest of the interior will see highs from 95 to
102 degrees. The coasts will warm up better than last weeks heat
event with plenty of upper 70s and 80s.
.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...13/325 AM.
Higher than normal confidence in the long-term forecast as
deterministic models as well as their ensembles are in good
agreement with minimal spread in their members.
A deep late season trof will approach the area on Thursday and
then pass through western states. It is actually forecast to pinch
off a little closed low over Sacramento. Rapidly falling hgts and
a return to onshore flow will bring three days of cooling. Hgts
fall to 574 dam on Saturday which will be the coolest day of the
next 7. After 3 days of cooling Saturday's max temps will be 8 to
12 degrees blo normal with max temps mostly in the 70s with 60s at
the beaches. All of the cool air advection should greatly hinder
the formation of a marine inversion and there should not be that
much in the way of low clouds. Still it is June and would be
totally surprised if more clouds develop than forecast.
Sunday will see decent warming as hgts rise and onshore flow
relaxes in the wake the trof.
&&
.AVIATION...13/0609Z.
At 0505Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 1300 ft deep. The top of
the inversion was 2600 feet with a temperature of 22 C.
High confidence TAFs for KPRB KWJF KPMD.
Moderate confidence in remaining TAFs. Flight Cat changes could
be off by as much as an hour and Cig hgts could be off by +/- 300

.MARINE...12/706 PM.
For the Outer Waters, moderate to high confidence in current
forecast. For PZZ670/673, high confidence in at least Small Craft
Advisory (SCA) level winds tonight through Friday. There is a 70%
chance of Gale force wind late tonight through Tuesday night and a
GALE WARNING will remain in effect. For Wednesday through Friday,
there is a 50% chance of Gale force winds. For PZZ676, high
confidence in SCA winds tonight through Friday with a 50% chance
of Gale force winds from Monday afternoon through Tuesday night
(GALE WATCH will remain in effect for this time period).
For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal, moderate to high
confidence in current forecast. High confidence in SCA level winds
tonight through Friday, especially during the afternoon and
evening hours. There is a 50% chance of Gale force winds Monday
afternoon through Tuesday night.
For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, moderate to high
confidence in current forecast. For the western half of the Santa
Barbara Channel, there is a 60-70% chance of SCA level winds
tonight through Friday, mainly during the late afternoon through
overnight hours. Elsewhere across the southern Inner Waters, winds
and seas are expected to remain below SCA levels through Friday.
&&
.BEACHES...12/706 PM.
High astronomical tides expected with the full moon on Tuesday
are expected to exceed 7 feet, approaching 7.3 to 7.4 feet in some
places, from Monday evening through Wednesday evening. The high
tides will cause the possibility of minor tidal overflow around
the time of high tide, inundating most exposed parking lots with
some minor flooding. No structures are expected to be affected.
In addition, strong winds in the coastal waters over the next few
days will generate elevated surf in mainly west and northwest
facing beaches. The elevated surf is expected to generate a high
risk of rip currents, mainly Monday and Tuesday.
To summarize, the central coast and Ventura coast will experience
elevated surf and minor tidal overflow, while LA county and
southern Santa Barbara County beaches will experience only the
minor tidal overflow.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...12/350 PM.
Onshore winds increasing across interior sections this afternoon
through Monday with gusts 25-45 MPH today and 30-50 mph on
Monday. The strongest winds each day will be focused across the LA
county mountains and Antelope Valley. Additionally, gusty
Sundowner winds are expected to develop across southern Santa
Barbara county during the late afternoon through nighttime hours
today through Tuesday night, with the strongest and most
widespread north winds likely Monday night with gusts of 35 to 55
mph. With a dry airmass remaining in place above the shallow
marine inversion, elevated fire weather conditions continue across
interior areas today and again Monday afternoon, especially the
LA county mountains and Antelope Valley.
For Monday night through Thursday, high pressure, once again, will build
over the desert Southwest, leading to a warming and drying trend.
Gusty north to northeast winds will impact a large portion of the
area away from the coast from Monday night through Wednesday
morning. The strongest winds during this period will likely be
across the mountains of Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara
counties (especially the Santa Ynez range, I-5 corridor, and
Highway 33 corridor) where wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph will be
likely, with isolated gusts up to 60 mph in favored locations.
However, north to northeast wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph will also
impact many valley and foothill areas across all four counties. By
Thursday, onshore flow will be on the increase across the
interior, with gusty onshore winds during the afternoon and
evening hours. Humidities will lower rapidly in many areas on
Monday night, with many wind prone areas seeing values lower to
between 10 and 25 percent, with pockets of single digit readings
possible. Minimum humidities between 5 and 15 percent will then be
common across many valley, foothill, mountain, and desert areas
Tuesday through Wednesday, increasing to 8 to 20 percent on
Thursday. Meanwhile, high temperatures in these areas will climb
to between 85 and 95 degrees on Tuesday, rising to between 90 and
102 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday. As a result, elevated to
brief critical fire weather conditions are likely for areas away
from the coast Monday night through Wednesday, then confined to
interior valleys, mountains, and deserts by Thursday.
