.The highest astronomical tides of the year, or King Tides, will
affect areas beaches and coastlines the next several mornings 
when high tide is forecast to occur. King tides have historically 
resulted in the minor flooding of beach walkways and normal dry
beach areas and increased rip current activity. The period of 
greatest threat of minor coastal flooding looks to be between 
early Friday through midday Saturday.

.SYNOPSIS...21/218 AM.

A warmer than normal weather pattern will be in place through the
holiday weekend. Gusty offshore winds are possible through the
weekend. Near record high temperatures are possible over the
weekend.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-FRI)...21/852 AM.

***UPDATE***

While the San Joaquin Valley is blanketed by Tule fog, SoCal is
under abundant sunshine. Breezy to locally gusty north to
northeast winds continue across much of the forecast area, most
prominent across the Santa Ynez range and through the Santa Ana
wind corridor. Peak gusts are largely in the 25 to 40 mph range
with some locally higher gusts (i.e., Magic Mountain Truck Trail)
up to 50 mph. Winds should weaken a bit into the afternoon as
gradients start to loosen. Offshore flow will continue through the
day across the more interior sections but at the immediate coast
an afternoon sea breeze will roll in. The offshore flow combined
with rising heights will lead to warming temperatures, most
prominent south and west of the mountains with highs in the low to
mid 70s.

An east Pacific ridge will keep NW flow over the area through the
period. A trof will ride over the ridge late Thursday into Friday
morning. The EC is a little more aggressive than the GFS but
looking at all of the ensembles only a few have rain so its odds
on that it will be cloudy but dry.

Hgts stay close to 578 dam but temps will change each day due to
low level pressure patterns. Offshore flow this morning will bring
6 to 12 degrees of warming to the csts/vlys while cool air
advecting in from the high deserts and San Joaquin vly will cool
the interior. That pattern reverses on Thursday as weaker onshore
flow will allow an earlier sea breeze which will cool cst/vly max
temps 3 to 6 degrees - the interior meanwhile will warm as the
cool air advection subsides. Rising hgts and sunnier skies will
lead to all areas warming 1 to 3 degrees on Friday.

Nearly 7 mb of offshore flow from the north and about 4 mb from
the east will combine to bring low end advisory gusts to the
eastern VTA Vlys, the Santa Clarita Vly and the western Santa
Monicas. The Santa Lucia range will also see some low end advisory
gusts.

.LONG TERM (SAT-TUE)...21/316 AM.

The GFS and EC deterministic mdls are in good agreement for the
xtnd period and their respective ensembles exhibit minimal spread
giving better than normal confidence in the Sat thru Mon fcst.
Confidence diminishes some Tuesday due to exact timing and
strength of a short waves.

Hgts over the weekend will be near 586 dam and could reach 588 dam
which is at least 14 dam higher than normal. This along with 4 to
5 mb of offshore flow from both the east and north will make this
a much warmer (and possibly record breaking) than normal holiday
weekend. Look for 3 to 6 degrees of warming Sat and another 2 to 4
degrees Xmas day. Xmas day will max temps 10 to 15 degrees above
normal with 80s likely in many of the vlys.

The ridge breaks down a little on Monday and there are good
onshore trends in the afternoon. This will lead to a couple
degrees of cooling across the csts and vlys. A reduction of cool
air advection will allow the csts/vlys to cool 1 or 2 degrees.

A series of trofs slams into the state on Tuesday. A chance of
rain will develop across the Central Coast and slight chc will
develop south of Pt Conception. It will be a cloudy day with 4 to
8 degrees of cooling. Max temps, however, will remain several
degrees above normal.

Next week things are likely get much more interesting in the
weather department. The ECM ensembles indicate several small
precipitation events coming as early as Tuesday night, Dec. 27th
and lingering through the remainder of the month. The jet stream
becomes much more elongated W to E from Japan to northern CA
leaving the door open for atmospheric river activity. The
probability of IVT >250kg/m/s already shows up in the EPS at this
latitude from Dec. 29-31 and EPS PWAT data increases to 1.0 inch
or higher during this same timeframe.

.AVIATION...21/1842Z.

At 1715Z at KLAX, there was no marine layer. There was a sfc
based inversion with a top of 2600 ft and a temperature of 16 C.

All the low clouds in the region failed to survive the offshore
gradients overnight, and VFR conditions are expected to reign
supreme in the next 24 hours. There is a 20-30 percent chance of
low clouds affecting a TAF site tonight, with greatest
vulnerability at KPRB. Otherwise, VFR conds are expected thru the
period.

KLAX...High confidence in CAVU TAF. No significant easterly wind
component is expected.

KBUR...High confidence in CAVU TAF.

.MARINE...21/939 AM.

No changes to the marine forecast in the morning update.

For the southern two outer waters zones (PZZ673/676), fairly high
confidence in winds increasing back to Small Craft Advisory (SCA)
level early this afternoon, then continuing thru Thu morning.
After that, confidence drops a bit. There is a 30% chance of SCA
level winds again late Thu night and Fri, with SCA level winds
likely Fri night thru Sun.

For the northern outer waters zone (PZZ670), low to moderate
confidence in the forecast. There is a 30-40% chance that winds
will increase to SCA levels this afternoon and continue thru late
tonight. Winds may get close to SCA levels Thu night, and again
Fri night thru Sun, with a 30-40% chance that a SCA will be needed.

For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal, high confidence in
current forecast that winds and seas will remain below SCA levels
thru Sun.

For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, moderate to high
confidence overall in current forecast. For the western half of
the Santa Barbara Channel, there is a 20-30% chance of SCA level
winds tonight. Otherwise, winds and seas are expected to remain
below SCA levels thru Sun.

.BEACHES...21/1052 AM.

The phase of the moon heads toward a new moon early this weekend.
This will set the stage for some high astronomical tides on Friday
and Saturday of just over 7 feet. This fact, in combination with
expected breakers of 3 to 5 feet during the same time raises the
possibility of minor tidal overflow during the times of high tide.
No damage is expected, just partial inundation of the lowest
sections of beach parking lots and walkways. A Beach Hazards
Statement will be issued this afternoon to address the situation.
