Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or
stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly
in such conditions, stay off the rocks.

.SYNOPSIS...11/820 AM.

High pressure aloft will weaken through early Wednesday before
building back into the region Thursday into the weekend. Night to
morning low clouds will become a bit more widespread west of the
mountains through Wednesday, then will be limited to coastal
areas later in the week. Hot conditions will prevail across
interior areas.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-WED)...11/831 AM.

***UPDATE***

According to the latest soundings, the marine layer has deepened
to 1000-1500 feet with stratus filling into most coasts including
much of the Santa Barbara South Coast which was recently under
protection from Sundowners. Low clouds and fog has managed to
nudge into some lower valleys. Strong onshore trends and overall
flow will support earlier and stronger winds which will cool areas
west of the mountains today with similar if not warmer
temperatures east of the mountains. Wind gusts up to 30 to 40 mph
will be possible for interior areas, likely remaining safely
below advisory criteria. Forecast is in good shape with only minor
tweaks with this update.

***From Previous Discussion***

A 1000 ft marine layer combined with onshore flow and onshore
trends has produced a fairly robust stratus pattern that covers
all of the coasts and the lower vlys. The afternoon onshore push
to the east is forecast to approach 9 mb and this strong a push
could prevent clearing at some west facing beaches. It will also
produce a strong seabreeze that will cool most of the coasts and
vlys. It will also bring gusty winds to the LA mtns and Antelope
Vly this afternoon. Hgts will be at 594 dam and this will allow
the interior which is not affected by the cooling sea breeze to
warm 2 to 4 degrees.

The low cloud pattern will be similar tonight as it is now. It may
even be a little deep with slightly better vly penetration as hgts
do fall some.

Tuesday will be the coolest day of the next 7 as the upper high
will wobble slightly to the east and hgts will fall a couple dam.
Max temps will fall 3 to 6 degrees save for the Salinas river vly
where a persistent cooling south flow will bring 8 to 12 degrees
of cooling. Max temps will end up 2 to 4 degrees blo normal.

The upper high will shift back west on Wednesday. Hgts again will
rise. The onshore push will be a little weaker but still strong
enough to bring low clouds to all of the coasts and some of the
lower vlys. Weaker onshore flow and higher hgts will team up warm
things up by 2 to 3 degrees. While the upper high will be in the
correct position for monsoon transport, all short range ensembles
indicate that the flow has not been in place long enough to bring
moist air into western California.

.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...11/338 AM.

Ensemble guidance (GEFS ECS GEPS) continued to show the upper
high sitting over the 4 corners area through at least Saturday. A
little less confidence Sunday as the ensembles begin to waiver on
the speed of the ridge weakening and the return of drier southwest
flow.

The marine layer will shrink and low clouds will be confined to
the coast and there will likely be less complete coastal coverage
as the onshore flow relaxes.

A small but not negligible amount ensemble members show enough
mid level moisture transport around the base of the high and into
eastern LA county to warrant a slight chc of TSTMs over the
eastern San Gabriels on Thursday and Friday. Its little far out
for good ensemble convergence but would not be surprised if the
slgt chc of TSTMs will be xtnd into Saturday as well.

Very good confidence that there will be a three day warming trend
Thu-Sat as a very warm air mass (595 dam) sits atop of the state.
Onshore flow will decrease through the period. Look for 2 to 4
degrees of warming Thu and Fri and an additional 1 to 2 degrees on
Saturday. There will be plenty of triple digit heat in the warmer
vly locations as well as the interior. Ensembles show a 10-20
percent chance of the hottest interior areas reaching 105-110
degrees on Friday and Saturday. There will be a very strong
inversion in place and this may keep overnight lows in the 70s or
even lower 80s for foothill areas between 1000 and 1500 ft. Will
have to monitor these temps and contemplate the issuance of heat
products if the forecast tilts to the higher end of the spectrum.

Sunday may see some cooling if the ensemble mean is correct and
the high shifts to the east along with an increase in onshore
flow. But there are a number of ensemble members that continue the
heat.

.AVIATION...11/1759Z.

At 1700Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 1400 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was around 3900 feet at a temperature of 24 C.

High confidence in the 18Z TAFs at KPRB, KWJF and KPMD with VFR
conds thru the fcst period.

Moderate confidence at best in the 18Z TAFs along the coast as
well as KBUR and KVNY. Clearing time at KOXR in the short term
may be off by an hour or so. Low clouds are expected for KBUR,
KVNY and all coastal airfields sometime tonight into Tue morning.
The arrival of low clouds tonight may be off by up to 2 hours.
Cig heights may be off by +/- 200 feet but should be mostly
LIFR/IFR. Clearing to VFR Tue morning for KSBP may be off an hour
or more.

KLAX...Moderate confidence overall in the 18Z TAF. Low clouds
with IFR conds could move back into the airfield at times with the
seabreeze this afternoon. Otherwise, the low clouds with IFR cigs
could arrive as early as 06Z or as late as 10Z tonight. VFR
transition could be as late as 20Z on Tue.

KBUR...Moderate confidence overall in the 18Z TAF. VFR conds can
be expected thru late tonight. Low clouds with IFR cigs could
arrive as early as 10Z or as late as 13Z tonight. VFR transition
could be as early as 16Z on Tue.

.MARINE...11/816 AM.

Across the outer waters, winds will likely remain below SCA level
today through Wednesday. There will then be a 40%-50% chance of
SCA level winds for the entire outer waters Wednesday evening,
especially for the northern waters and the waters south of Point
Conception. SCA winds become likely by Saturday, as a 20%-30%
chance of gale force gusts develops.

For the inner waters north of Pt Sal, winds and seas will likely
remain below SCA levels through Wednesday. For Thursday and
Friday, there will be a 30% chance of SCA level wind gusts during
the afternoon and evening hours. Chances increase to around 40%
for afternoon/evening SCA level winds over the weekend.

For the inner waters south of Point Conception, winds and seas
will likely remain below SCA levels through Wednesday morning. By
Wednesday evening, there is a 20% chance for SCA level winds. SCA
level winds may reoccur each evening Thursday into the weekend
over the western Santa Barbara Channel.

.BEACHES...11/1100 AM.

High astronomical tides will develop later this week with the July
Full Moon and could cause minor coastal flooding at some beaches
in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Elevated high tides slightly
in excess of 7 feet are expected to occur each evening between
Tuesday and Thursday. In addition, a long-period southerly swell
will arrive on Friday evening and could prolong minor coastal
flooding.
