.SYNOPSIS...05/857 PM.

A broad area of low pressure moving through the Pacific Northwest
will bring a general cooling trend through the middle of next
week. A west to northwest flow pattern will increase onshore flow
across the area, except for southern Santa Barbara County where
gusty Sundowner winds will strengthen each night through Sunday.
Night through morning low clouds and fog will likely persist at
least along the coast, expanding farther inland each night
through Saturday across the Southland.

.SHORT TERM (THU-SUN)...05/919 PM.

The latest water vapor imagery shows an upper-level trough of low
pressure approaching the Pacific Northwest. The trough near 45N
and 140W will continue to move east into the Pacific Northwest
through Friday night then be reinforced by another upstream trough
near the tip of the Aleutian Islands. A cooling trend will
persist over much of the area into the weekend and likely into the
early half of next week.

A low-level west to northwest flow in place will keep a
northwesterly gradient along the Central Coast of California
while increasing onshore flow across the Southland. Marine layer
coverage is little less certain for areas north of Point
Conception due to the amount of cold air advection taking place as
series of weak boundaries move across the region, but better
agreement exists for a deepening marine intrusion that should
bring a little better expansion of low clouds and fog across Los
Angeles and Ventura Counties into Saturday.

The tightening gradient will likely develop gusty Sundowner winds
across southern Santa Barbara County with winds increasing each
night through Saturday night. Onshore flow increasing each day
will bring stronger sea breezes each afternoon and winds could
approach advisory criteria in the Antelope Valley and the
Los Angeles County mountains at times.

A few tweaks have been made to the low cloud coverage for tonight
in the upcoming update. The main concern is for dense fog as a
shallow marine layer depth near 750 feet is in place. A dense fog
advisory is being considered at this time for the Los Angeles
County coastal areas.

With strong north/south gradients across the western counties and
strong west/east gradients in LA/Ventura Counties gusty winds
will be developing in many areas, but especially southern Santa
Barbara County and the Antelope Valley. That gradient combo is
also favorable for a decent eddy circulation across the southern
coastal waters which should keep a solid marine layer presence
from at least LA County south and possibly as far north as Ventura
County. This pattern expected to continue into early next week so
it looks like a lengthy stretch of daily wind advisories in
southern Santa Barbara County and the Antelope Valley. Less wind
in coastal LA/Ventura Counties but some northerly flow could
filter down from the mountains at times. Temperatures are expected
to hold pretty steady through Saturday, then turn cooler Sunday
as the next trough arrives along the Pac NW causing the marine
layer to deepen.

.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...05/127 PM.

Troughing will be a mainstay next week, though less impactful
after Wednesday. Strong northerly gradients in the west and strong
west/east gradients across LA/Ventura Counties will continue the
windy pattern through mid week, especially for southern Santa
Barbara County and the Antelope Valley. Temperatures will continue
their cooling trend that will have begun Sunday as the trough
deepens along the west coast. Highs expected to be mostly in the
60s before temperatures start a slow climb Wednesday or Thursday.
Earlier model solutions had suggested a chance of rain across the
area by Wednesday but more recent ensembles have trended drier
and chances for anything other than marine layer drizzle now are
very small.

At 0330Z, the marine inversion at KLAX was based at 800 feet.
The top of the inversion was 1900 feet with a temperature
of 22 degrees Celsius.

Overall, low to moderate confidence in 06Z coastal TAFs and high
confidence in valley/desert TAFs. Lower confidence for coastal
sites is due to uncertainty in the formation as well as the flight
category of any CIG/VSBY restrictions as cirrus clouds will be
wreaking havoc with stratus development overnight.

KLAX...Overall, moderate confidence in 06Z TAF. High confidence in
CIG/VSBY restrictions through Friday morning, but low confidence
in flight category (IFR to VLIFR) and changes between flight
categories. No significant easterly wind component is expected.

KBUR...High confidence in 06Z TAF as VFR conditions are
anticipated through the period.

For the Outer Waters, moderate to high confidence in the
forecast. Tonight through Saturday morning, high confidence in
Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level winds with a 30% chance of gale
force gusts Friday night/Saturday morning. From Saturday
afternoon through Monday, high confidence in Gale force winds and
10+ foot seas. A GALE WATCH is currently in effect for Saturday
through Monday.

For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal, moderate to high
confidence in current forecast. High confidence in winds
increasing to SCA levels Friday afternoon and continuing through
Saturday (with a 30% chance of Gale force winds Saturday
afternoon). For Saturday night through Monday, high confidence in
SCA level winds and seas with a 40% chance of gale force winds
Saturday night and Sunday.

For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, moderate to high
confidence in current forecast. Tonight through Friday night, high
confidence in winds and seas remaining below SCA levels for most
areas. The only exception will be the western half of the Santa
Barbara Channel where there is a 60% chance of SCA level winds
Friday afternoon and Friday night. For Saturday through Monday,
high confidence in SCA level winds developing across all the
southern Inner Waters with a 40% chance of Gale force winds
Saturday night through Monday.

Short period seas will grow rapidly across all of the
waters, building to 12-15 feet(possibly peaking near 17 feet) in
the outer waters, 10-13 feet nearshore along the Central Coast,
and to 8-12 feet over the nearshore waters south of Point
Conception by Sunday evening.

A long-period southerly swell and an increase in northwest swell
will bring hazardous rip currents to area beaches today through
Monday with elevated to near high surf criteria. There is a 20
percent chance of reaching High Surf Advisory criteria today.

High surf condition are likely for most beaches by this weekend.
Locally generated short period swells will likely develop this
weekend, potentially increasing beach hazards for many coastal
areas. Surf peaks along the Central Coast this afternoon through
tonight before falling slightly and rising again Saturday
afternoon, peaking on Sunday. Surf will peak Sunday for the Santa
Barbara South Coast and Ventura Coast, and peak Monday for the
L.A. Coast.
