.SYNOPSIS...08/650 PM.

Expect gusty northerly winds Saturday night into Sunday in advance
of an approaching cold front. Above normal temperatures on
Saturday will cool to near normal on Sunday. There is a slight
chance of rain showers late Monday into Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM (FRI-MON)...08/825 PM.

Strong upper level ridge of high pressure combined with moderate
offshore flow to bring another round of record heat to the
southland today. Record highs included Downtown Los Angeles (95
degrees), UCLA (94 degrees), LAX (97 degrees), Long Beach Airport
(101 degrees), Camarillo (99 degrees), Oxnard (98 degrees), and
Santa Barbara Airport (90 degrees). With much cooler weather
expected on Saturday, all head advisories were allowed to expire
this evening.

The offshore LAX-DAG pressure gradient has diminished considerably
this evening, resulting in much less wind tonight across
LA/Ventura counties. As a result, overnight low temperatures will
not be as warm as last night. Meanwhile, sundowner winds are
once again developing across southern Santa Barbara county as
northerly pressure gradients tighten tonight. As of 8 pm, the
Santa Barbara-Santa Maria pressure gradient was -3.6 mb. The
Santa Barbara-Bakersfield gradient is expected to increase to
around -4 mb by early Saturday morning. As a result, may need
to issue wind advisories for the Santa Ynez mountains and south
coast as wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph are expected to be common
tonight, with localized gusts up to 45 mph in favored areas
near Gaviota and Montecito Hills. On Saturday night, both
sundowner pressure gradients are expected to be slightly stronger
with some additional upper level wind support. As a result,
wind advisories will be likely for Saturday night, with gusts
in the 40 to 50 mph range. The strongest winds for Saturday night
are expected in the Montecito Hills and adjacent foothill
areas along the eastern Santa Ynez range, along with humidities
that could locally lower to around 10 percent.

Onshore winds also expected to increase across the Antelope
Valley on Saturday afternoon and evening, with gusts in the
30 to 40 mph range. Northwest winds are also expected to
pick up tomorrow night across the Interstate 5 corridor.
The return of onshore flow on Saturday will bring much cooler
temperatures to the region, however the valleys will still
climb into the mid to upper 80s. Further cooling is expected
on Sunday as heights continue to lower and a fairly strong
eddy circulation brings a return of marine layer clouds.

On Monday a deep upper level low forms in the Gulf of Alaska and
an associated trough will swing through the area Monday night.
Ensemble solutions have a chance of very light precipitation (less
than a tenth of an inch) for our area while this passes overhead.
The pattern becomes more zonal Wednesday until a trough with
another low develops on Thursday.

Clear skies, gusty north to northeast winds, and high heights
combined for another day of record breaking heat today. Several
records were broken in LA and Ventura Counties, including Long
Beach that hit 100. There has been some cooling at the immediate
beaches, where earlier seabreezes have kicked in. The overnight
lows will be cooler than last night. Expecting skies to remain
clear.

A broad trough will move into the Pacific NW tonight and Sat, then
it will drop southward through the western U.S. Sat night and Sun.
Heights and thicknesses will drop steadily through the weekend.
There will be significant cooling across the region on Saturday,
though temps may still get close to 90 degrees in the warmest
valley locations.  The LAX-DAG gradient will become increasingly
onshore on Sat.

Low clouds and fog may return to the Central Coast and coastal
sections of L.A. County early Sun.  N-S gradients will become more
offshore again Sunday and there may be gusty NW-N winds Sun night
in southern SBA County and the adjacent south coast, and through
the I-5 Corridor.

Skies will be cloudier on Monday and heights may fall a bit more
as well, resulting in temperatures around downtown LA to fall to
slightly below normal. Monday night into Tuesday could bring some
very light rain to the area with most places having less than a
50% chance and receiving less than a tenth of an inch of rain if
it does fall. A look at the trends of the past several runs of
the GEFS and EPS show less in the way of rain with each run.The
snow level should be above 5500' during the precipitation period,
but will drop to 3000' later on Tuesday.

.LONG TERM (TUE-FRI)...08/203 PM.

The trough will move east of the area on Tuesday and a northwest
flow pattern sets up across the region. There may be some gusty
NW-N winds along with continued cool weather and clearing skies.

The upper flow backs to the west for Wednesday and Thursday as a
weak trough moves into the Pac NW. Expect temps to edge upward a
bit Wednesday, then change little on Thursday. There may be a
return to night thru morning low clouds and fog in coastal areas
Wed night/Thu morning.

There is a chance the trough will drop close enough to our area on
Friday to bring increased clouds, and a chance of precipitation in
the northern part of SLO County, but that's a week away and very
low confidence.

.AVIATION...09/0529Z.

At 0530Z at KLAX, there was a surface based inversion. The top of
the inversion was near 1100 feet with a temperature of 30 deg C.

High confidence in VFR conditions through Saturday, with
10 percent chance of MVFR haze at KLGB and KLAX between 12z-16z.
Increasing onshore flow will bring gusty W-NW winds to KSBP,
KSMX, KPMD, and KWJF on Saturday afternoon/evening. A strong
catalina eddy circulation is expected to bring a return of marine
layer low clouds to LA coastal TAFS by late Saturday evening,
however there remains uncertainty in flight category with arrival
of cigs on Saturday night.

KLAX...High confidence in VFR TAF through period. 10 percent
chance of MVFR haze between 12Z and 16Z. High confidence that any
east wind component on Saturday morning will not exceed 6 kt.
A strong eddy circulation has the potential to bring southeast
to east winds of 10 knots or greater on Saturday night.

KBUR...High confidence in VFR TAF through period.

For the Outer Waters, a Gale warning is in effect through Monday.
Winds may briefly fall below Gale levels each morning. There is a
40 percent chance that the Gale warning will need to be extended
into at least Tuesday. Large seas (12-16) feet will develop
Saturday.

For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal, SCA in effect for winds
and seas through Monday. There is a 20 percent chance of Gale
force winds in the western portion each afternoon and evening this
weekend. The SCA will likely need to be upgraded to a Gale W
early next week with widespread Gale Force winds likely. Large
seas above 10 feet will develop Saturday, likely continuing into
early next week.

SCA level NW winds are likely during the afternoon and evening
hours across the western Santa Barbara Channel this weekend.
Widespread Gale Force winds with large seas near and above 10 feet
are likely across the inner waters Monday afternoon into Tuesday.

.BEACHES...08/729 PM.

A combination of a building northwest swell and locally generated
wind waves will support high surf and dangerous rip currents for
the Central Coast through at least Monday. Ventura county beaches
will also likely experience high surf and dangerous rip currents
Saturday morning through at least Sunday evening. High surf
conditions may spread to additional beaches early next week.

Ocean water temperatures in the mid 50s to near 60 can easily
cause hypothermia and immediate danger to those entering the
water. The combination of high surf, strong rip currents, and
cold water will be dangerous to unprepared swimmers or surfers.
